Halki is a small island in the south Dodecanese with no more than 300 inhabitants.
Nimporio, Halki’s only inhabitant place stretches around the port creating a picture-like scenery with old houses, some of them really majestic.
There is also the abandoned Village under the medieval castle in the inner island. Just recently there is interest from old Halki families to renovate their old houses, so there is a sparkle of life in the old village. It must be noted that the Old Village is under UNESCO protection as world cultural heritage, while Nimporio has been declared as traditional village which means that remains as it was, keeping its unique atmosphere.
Visiting Halki is a trip to the romantic Greek life of small settlements.
Few villagers – most of them fishermen or shepherds – a bakery, a couple multi-stores and some taverns or café (kafeneio )-this is Halki. Walk through the narrow stone-paved paths, smell the bougainvillea, discover the secrets of the Castle, visit the byzantine church of Holly Mary (which celebrates on 15th of August) - just discover Halki.
The biggest feast of the island is on 29th of August, day of St. John. The festivities last for two days and everyone is welcome to take part in the celebrations dancing and singing traditional songs.
Swimming in the blue-green sea under the Greek sun is what all visitors love and enjoy. Small boats help you to discover small remote beaches or offer a round trip of the island. You can also go on a daily exertion to the nearby island of Alimnia, an inhabitant island used to be shelter for fishermen.
