Fresh eggs from our beautiful hens
We were so lucky to get this place in time for my nephew's graduation at Stanford. We stayed for 3 days but wished we didn't have to leave. The location was incredible! The cottage beautiful. And Danna's generous hospitality amazing! We are already dreaming of coming back, next time bringing our bikes. It is gorgeous! There are walking and hiking trails close by and wonderful food options very near. We saw so much wildlife on our walks. I wish I could have bottled that beautiful fresh pine filled air. We absolutely loved it. So close to everything but you feel like you are a million miles from town. Hope to be back soon!
My husband and I needed a place to stay close to Stanford Hospital, while he was recovering from a heart transplant. Since we were having to stay for an extended period of time I needed to find someplace where he would be comfortable. I knew it was important for me to be comfortable too, as this was going to be a stressful time and I needed to take care of myself as his caregiver.
I had looked at several options and they just weren't right. I called Danna and she suggested I come and stay a couple of nights (she was between guests) to see if it would work for us. As I left the freeway and drove up Alpine Road it was so beautiful with all of the trees, horses in pastures, very idyllic. I turned into the driveway and felt an immediate connection with the property. Large oak trees, hills in the background, and rustic looking cottage. I knew right then that was the place for us! The cottage is so comfortable. Lots of light coming in from both windows and skylights. The bed is so comfy, and the sheets are ironed and smell like out doors! Danna dries them on the line. Wonderful, wonderful!
Danna...I can't say enough about Danna. She was considerate, concerned, and became a close friend in the process. A fascinating lady! We had great discussions over wine, and she introduced me to the knitting group, and put me in touch with a friend who has horses. It was all so helpful as it helped me from feeling overwhelmed and isolated.
I would highly, highly recommend Danna's rental for anyone, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who is recuperating from a hospital stay. We certainly would have had no problem staying indefinitely!
Words cannot begin to convey the experience my daughter and I have had staying at this lovely VRBO! It is more than gorgeous, it is absolutely heaven. We have stayed here more than once, and every time, we are more than sad to leave. Danna is the perfect hostess, a gem and friend. She is helpful if you need anything, but gives you your freedom and privacy at the same time. She is an animal and nature lover, and can show and tell you the best trails all around the areas! These are trails that can be assessed just across the street from her house! They are breathtaking trails and we enjoyed them every day! Our collie was treated like a king at this VRBO, Danna greeted him as part of the family. The cottage is immaculate, with gorgeous bed linens and the ultimate pillows and towels. The decor is splendid - made so tasteful and elegant, yet very comfortable. We felt we were home here, truly home. The surroundings are so peaceful and the scenery - even as you look out the bedroom and living room windows is astounding. I would wake up each day rested and so excited to take on a new adventure. The sunlight fills the cottage and cool breezes often fill the bedroom at night. San Francisco and Half Moon Bay are not far - and there is a fun market and nice restaurants nearby. The Stanford campus is minutes away. It was a perfect location for us. Thank you so much, Danna, we will be back and we LOVE this slice of heaven on earth!
This is SO long overdue but I was just recommending this place to a friend, came on VRBO to get the link, and realized I'd neglected to write this! Sorry Danna!
I needed a place to finish my book. I had six weeks to go, needed to leave my home, husband, and kids, and just write the darn thing. I needed a place where I could eat, sleep, and write. I was desperate, and willing to take ANYTHING. What I found was a treasure, a gem, a magical existence, in the form of Danna Breen and her unique home and property. The bed was cozy, the kitchen had everything I needed, but unexpected was the view, the air, the energy, the wildlife, the vibe. A bluegrass band occasionally practices there. Sunset over the patio is breathtaking. The elderly in the community come by occasionally for BBQ. I'm telling you - you feel like a human thriving in the wilderness of humans at Danna's place and under Danna's care (always there when you need her, never hovering). I keep needing more writing getaways and I keep writing to Danna to see if the place is available. It never is. It's always booked. Speaks for itself.
This review is long overdue. My apologies to Danna, the most wonderful host someone could ask for. When relocating to the area, I started with 2 month commitment which turned into 8 months. And even then it was a hard place to leave.
Your experience starts when you drive up Alpine road under a canopy of trees and up into the hills. As I did so every day for 8 months, I felt like I was going into a different world and leaving the stress of Silicon Valley behind. Turning into her driveway only increased that feeling. The lush and eclectic garden full of flowers and trees felt secluded and welcoming. The rustic appointments of the house made it feel like home. Even the crunch of the gravel driveway under my wheels was comforting.
As you go around the corner to the separate, private entrance to the cottage, you are immediately greeted by spectacular view of trees and the hills. It is the same view as you have out all the windows in the cottage. The cottage itself is light, inviting, homey and well decorated. It is very livable for one or two people. But the photos can probably tell you all you want to know about the cottage itself.
What the photos cannot tell you is want a wonderful, special person Danna is. Charming, quirky, friendly and caring. Some of my fondest memories are of enjoying a glass of wine with her in her living room, sometimes in the company of her wonderful family and fascinating friends... and of course, her mischievous dog, Charlie Cooper.
But don't get me wrong, you will only see Danna as much as you want. She gives you all the privacy you want. She was never intrusive. Most of the time I sought her out as her company was so enjoyable.
It was my pleasure to stay at this special place and I would again without second thought. My only regret is that after becoming attached to the family and the place, I miss them.
This three-room bungalow sits on the edge of a majestic view of Windy Hill and the coastal mountains that backs up to Palo Alto. The great room is great in the European sense: a good chair to read in, a sofa to stretch out on, books and a music collection, a large dinning table that anchors lively conversation late into the night and a kitchen that is fully appointed with all you need to cook grilled cheese sandwiches on a lazy afternoon or salmon cakes for visiting friends and family. If you haven’t figured it out by now my wife and I loved this little place.
Each morning a gentle sea breeze falls through the white knuckles of the fog hanging on the ridge line opposite and works it way down into the valley below and up our hill and through our bedroom window left ajar through the night just for it. If you love nature you will relish this little casita.
The place is sparkling clean, The bed is big, welcoming and firm. The sheets were ironed and crisp when we got there. There is a little room behind the kitchen that makes a good office, if you have to work but really you shouldn’t. There are hiking trails, Stanford isn’t far. And last there is the outside patio. Here big thoughts disappear into the heavens and float back as joy and the good luck and gratitude of having found such a place. And yes fresh eggs 30 steps away.
