|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Located at Taurikura, a quiet settlement on a sandy bay, beneath majestic Mt Manaia, only a half hour drive (about 30kms - 20 miles) from down-town Whangarei.
Our family bach is a basic three bedroom house with generations of mix and match furniture, but it overlooks the beach and has a different view from every window - mountain, forest, beach or farmland, with stunning views of the harbour from the deck.
The large deck is equipped with a BBQ and an eight seat outdoor setting with umbrella.
The lounge has a huge couch, wide-screen TV and DVD player, the kitchen is fully equipped.
Children are welcome and will love the place, but please see 'Special Conditions' regarding young children.
Taurikura offers arguably the best/safest swimming beach on the harbour, which also makes it a great place to kayak, snorkel etc.
The diving and spear fishing is good, there's plenty of scallops to be had.
Bring your boat (the bach has its own mooring - please ask) or there are plenty of spots to fish from the rocks within a few minutes walk.
Rental of the bach kayak is available as an optional extra for $50 for the duration of your stay. It's a quality, stable design, ideal for fishing, or exploring the coastline. Alternatively, Whangarei based companies can also rent and deliver kayaks for $60-120/day.
Ocean beach is nearby, offering surfing and miles of sandy beach.
Tennis courts are just across the road - visitors are welcome.
The bush walk to the top of Mt Manaia is an unforgettable experience, with views that have to be experienced to be believed, while Mt Aubrey and the Heads Reserve also offer terrific walks and views.
The Parua Bay shopping center, about 10 minutes away, has fuel, groceries, a bottle store, cafe and takeaways.
The Deck cafe in nearby McLeod Bay (5 mins) does great food, takeaways and basic groceries.
You may bring your own linen, or we can supply it at an additional charge upon request.
While children are welcome, care is required with young children.
The house dates from an earlier era, and was not built with young children in mind - consequently there are a number of hazards.
For example, there are a number of 'drop-offs' on the sloping (terraced) site and the deck is very high.
Caregivers are responsible for assessing the suitability of the property for the children in their care.
Extras: Linen (Optional, NZ$20.00 per person); Kayak Hire (Optional, NZ$50.00 per stay); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave;
Mountain and bush tracks abound, with Ocean Beach nearby and tennis courts just across the road.
So handy to the local beach and other great beaches and activities around Whangarei Heads, lovely views, spacious enough for our family of 6, a typical old-fashioned kiwi bach with that feeling of yesteryear.
Fantastic location & everything needed is at the Bach - perfect for kids. We'll be going back!
the bach is a great place to stay with the family. it is close to a sheltered beach and handy to some great walks and places to explore at Whangarei Heads. Our family loved our 3 days there
Loved it! Beautiful views, very comfortable and well stocked pantry! We enjoyed the board games and DVDs, as we struck a wet weekend in April! Will plan a trip back to this bach in summer to enjoy the outdoors more! For those who are comtemplating doing The Wild Kiwi run - the event base is right across the road! It was perfect!
