About Shawn Hipp

My husband and I bought Hipp's Hideaway for rental purposes in 2001. We had been in the rental business for 18 years in St. Paul, MN, and thought we'd try something more 'fun'. We were able to get in on the building process add many of the finishing touches ourselves. As we were seasoned vacaton renters, we were able to keep the needs of renters in mind. Our goal was ... and is.. to make you feel like it is YOUR place during your stay......

We selected Hayward as a great rental area, then looked at 31 properties. We were always drawn back to Tiger Cat Cove. Yes, it was strong in all the basic 'investment oriented' things... large wooded lot, good frontage, good sized lakehome, but also had an amazing serenity piece that the others didn't. Our guestbook at the cabin can attest to this as well... come check us out!

I get mistaken for a male all the time -- but it is less traumatic now than in 7th grade when I was assigned to the boys locker room for my PE class :) ....

Shawn Hipp purchased this house in 2001

Why Shawn Hipp chose Northern Wisconsin

We were determined to invest in an area that would welcome us AND our guests, and Hayward fit the bill. There are tons of things to do right at the cabin, nearby, or in town. Great dining options abound. The superior water clarity into the fall, the sand bottom frontage, and the varied woods surrounding the property kept drawing us back.

What makes this house unique

Well paved backroads for walks and biking. Fun chain of lakes to explore +++ great fishing. Cabin comes with 2 canoes, a kayak and a paddleboat. Rent a stand up paddleboat in town!

Free evening concerts featuring the loons, accompanied by the bull frogs. Crickets will chime in as well. Suggested finale is to finish off your concert experience watching the dance & crackle of a lakeside campfire and take in the visual array of the evening stars and moon against the pitch black sky...

We had a wonderful week in the woods. This quiet spot is close enough to one of Wisconsin's premiere vacation towns that there's plenty to do ... or lots of nothing. We chose a bit of both.

Just Lovely!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Hipp's Hideaway! The property is beautiful, as described. The lake is very quiet in terms of boat traffic. Almost none. We heard the loons regularly. Saw them a few times, too.

We all enjoyed swimming in the lake, even our 4-year-old grandson. And the paddling was very nice, both on the lake to the dam, through the Flowage to other lakes, and even down the Chief River.

The local roads were very conducive to walking, pushing a stroller, and biking.

The home is very conducive to a family gathering, with a nice open kitchen/dining/living space. It was easy to prepare meals, play games, and just relax.

We do hope to return to Hipp's Hideaway!

Owner's Response: Thanks ! I hope you do... the lake is getting better and better for swimming the more it gets used, so glad you were able to contribute that way:). Did your grandson enjoy all the little fishies swimming around with him? Come back again the off season - it's great up there in the fall/winter,too.

Great Weekend

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to stay! My family of 4 loved it. We walked around the cute shops of Hayward in the morning and hung out by the lake all afternoon. There were kayaks and floating toys which the kids loved. The view from the deck was amazing and relaxing. I enjoyed the mornings with a cup of coffee and the tranquil sounds of the woods around me. I would stay here again!

Great views of the lake and night time sky

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this beautiful, wooded location. Our vacation week ran over the busy 4th of July weekend, yet we still felt we had most of the lake to ourselves. The decks provided great views of the clear waters of the Tiger Cat Flowage plus spectacular night time views of the stars. The cabin was large with two levels, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, allowing us to spread out to our own private and quiet spaces. It was nicely decorated with the "north woods" theme. We especially liked the well supplied kitchen with plenty of room for several cooks (plus the person doing the dishes) to be in there at the same time! The docks provided a wonderful place to hang out to enjoy nature, swim, and launch the canoes, kayak and paddle boat. (Beware, you do have to walk down a LOT of steps to get there!) We didn't leave the cabin much, it was so relaxing in there and on its docks, but when we did leave, Hayward offered many activities and fun shops. Our favorite activities are Go-Karting, Mini-golfing and shopping. Our favorite shops are Hi-Ho Silver, West's Ice Cream (the BEST around!!), and Ronning's Sweatshirt Shop. The cabin owners were very easy to work with and gave very clear instructions throughout the process. "Hipp's Hideaway" truly describes this place, since it is tucked away in the woods, yet offers star-spangled night time skies! Want to relax and enjoy family time? If so, you'll want to rent this cabin!

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a great time we had! We met up with another family of 4 at Hipp's Hideaway! We had a blast. The cabin is set up well to accommodate both of our families with plenty of personal room so you didn't feel like you were always running into someone. We spent a lot of time just relaxing on the deck looking down to the water. The lake is very peaceful and "hideaway" is a perfect description as the cabin is set into a quiet bay. The only distraction we heard were some deer walking through the yard and a family of playful loons in the bay. Great fishing throughout the Tiger Cat flowage as well. We were usually on the water every morning by 5 am and back in by 9. The kids usually were in the water by noon floating in the bay and swimming around. By 8pm it was difficult to keep them awake down at the campfire.

I would highly recommend Hipp's Hideaway to anyone looking for a peaceful place to regain your sanity. The owners Shawn and his wife are great people and have made This cabin a truly special place to visit! Looking forward to our next visit.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind review... glad you had a great time. Your kids certainly helped work the beach ! The more we use it the sandier it becomes/stays ! Come back again, please! We love repeat renters. Shawn Johnson-Hipp PS -- and Shawn is a female in my case... :) .. Charlie is my hubby -- take a look at our profile for proof ! BUT -- I'm used to being mistaken for a male (see comments below + check out junior high boys PE locker room assignment story ... so after that mistaken identity trauma/drama nothing phases me anymore :)

Great cabin for a fishing trip

  • 5 of 5

Our trip consisted of 5 men, mostly in our 30's, and we were there primarily for fishing. We really enjoyed the cabin and had a great time!

As far as the cabin - plenty of space for 5 to sleep. Great layout of the cabin with a nice lake view from the deck.

By the way while it wasn't necessarily important to us, the wifi was actually pretty good :-)

If you're interested in fishing, we had some good success there as well... the lake the cabin sits on is pretty shallow with quite a bit of vegetation, so weedless baits are recommended. Good fishing though... lots of blue gill & bass, some pike and muskie. More success with pike and muskie in the connected lakes. I would recommend this cabin if you're looking for a fishing trip though. We used both canoes, the kayak and the paddleboat at various times and all were in good shape. Connected lakes are accessible and boat traffic was pretty light so wasn't a problem not having a power boat.

Not a criticism, but my only recommendation to the owners would be the addition of a fish cleaning station which would help cater to fishing groups (if that's of interest).

The owners were also very easy to work with and quickly responded to any questions. Overall, definitely recommend the cabin!

We vacationed in the Troncones in search for our ultimate wave, and the boys had KING bunks. Loved them... but too big for our space --so settled on queen bunks. We built them ourselves + distressed them by carving the edges & putting nails in socks and whacking them! Fun project for all.
