About Bruce Carter
Curtis Westphal: My Dad was a fighter pilot in Viet Nam. When he went off to war I was about 16. We stayed here with my grandparents. The beach is a wonderful place and made even more special staying at grandma's place. We learned to sail a Hobie Cat, experienced the full force of mother nature when a hurricane passed near by, and grew up in the slow pace of a small beach town where you know your neighbors. (Just don't let your cat wonder onto the beach. Tourist think its lost and take it home.) I lived here from Junior High, High School, and went off to college in Gainesville where I met my wife, Kathy. When we graduated we went out west to visit relatives in Colorado where we settled and have raised 2 boys. It was satisfying to see them get the same pleasure of going to the beach that I had as a kid. They are alway introducing me to new adventures. In this picture Kathy and I are about to go up in this biplane once owned by Randolph Hurst to get back and forth to mansion in California. It was their treat for my 50th birthday. What a one of a kind way to see the barrier islands flying low along the shore just like the seagulls and pelicans. Hope you find your own kind of fun in the sun. Enjoy our family place in Florida.
Bruce Carter purchased this Cottage in 1996
Why Bruce Carter chose Pinellas County
My grandparents moved down here from New Orleans and turned the house and carriage house into 6 vacation rentals. They did this for 40 years. They turned over the keys to Kathy and me so it stays in the family for the next generation to enjoy sharing with great guests that come back year after year.
What makes this Cottage unique
Location, Location, Location You will be vacationing on the closest beach to Tampa airport while also secluded from the vacation crowds. We are located in 'The Narrows', so named by the local settlers of the 1920's because the barrier island is so skinny here that there is only room for a single row of homes. The emerald green waters of the Gulf are out your front door and and yachts cruising the channel are out your back door. Water surrounds you like no where else with fantastic tropical views and a true island feeling. Our many repeat guests tell us that this is the most coveted spot on the 12 miles of world class beaches between Clearwater and St Petersburg.

It was a great spot and adequate for our needs.
Unit was clean and had a wonderful view of the gulf. However it was in need of updating and a good remodeling. We were there in peak season and the rate was less than most but I would pay more next stay and get a “fresher” unit.
Great location and beautiful beach directly in front of the unit
We loved our stay at this unit. The beach directly in front of the unit is beautiful and also remains curiously uncrowded, even when areas just up the way are filled with large groups. We walked the beach every day and also rented bikes and rode on the beach at low tide. The unit was walking distance to a number of restaurants. We can strongly recommend Caddy's Pub - less than a quarter mile away, with surprisingly good food. We also cooked in the unit on several occasions. The gas grill outside worked great - complete with utensils. We were in the upstairs unit - it is fairly small, as is the deck (actually more like a landing) at the top of the stairs that goes directly out to the beach. Our only complaint was the stove - one of the burners does not work at all, and on another burner, the element was "sprung" making it impossible to set a pan down it and have it sit flat. While the remaining appliances and fixtures in the unit were getting up there in age, they all worked so we had no problem with them. It was very nice to have coffee filters there and ready to go. The laundry facility is shared and the machines are a bit beat up - but they work. Word of advice - go to the grocery store on the way in - there is nothing I would call a grocery store anywhere near the unit.
Can't beat the peace and quiet, convenient back yard beach access and unique character of this awesome little place! 5 Stars!
A little good - A lot not so good
First the good - it is right on the beach with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Intercoastal on the other side. Public beach access is not near this unit so the beach is very private and a lot less busy and hectic. The unit was relatively clean - I would give it a 7 out of 10. Now the bad .... the unit itself as well as the surrounding areas and other units are just "old and tired" and the unit we stayed in was extremely small. The pictures are deceiving as some make it look like this is in your unit but it is actually in common areas of the entire building. The deck is on the side of the unit with access through a door. It had nails coming out all over the place and was in bad need of paint or stain. The deck had two taller chairs but then this little plastic end table that really was so small you could not put anything on it. We seldom used this area. The bedding in our unit looked like it had been washed way past its prime and it had an unpleasant smell. The furniture is old, the bathroom shower had a plastic curtain over a window as well as a plastic liner and it made it almost impossible to take a shower with both plastics battling against you. The shower unit itself needed some caulking and had some mildew issues. If you are going to cook any meals check to make sure you have everything you need before you buy food items as we bought an item in a can and found out there was no can opener. We could only get one burner to work on the stove. We did use the outdoor gas grill which worked and was nice. While we were there in the unit below us a very large group was staying in what we thought was a very small place. Luckily for us they were pretty well behaved but they would take over the outdoor area and would leave their trash and bottle and cans at the base of our steps. Just beware that you could run into this. Overall it just was not a good experience and unless things drastically changed, we would not stay there again.
Beach front and view of intercoastal waterway in front and Gulf of Mexcio in the back
Unique location in the narrows section of Indian Shores Beach. There was the inter-coastal, our house, and the beach..nothing in between.
And the rental came with beach chairs, umbrella, and all the beach toys you could ever use including 2 kayaks. Only downside was the aged house, 4 units built in the 1920's, were pretty worn.
Management did their best to keep the units neat and as tidy as possible.
