Overview

About the property

4 Bedr, 3 Bath, Huge Screened In Wrap Around Porch, Walking Distance To Beach.

You will delight in the privacy of your own home nestled in the beautiful critical sand dunes of Lake Michigan. The area is small and quiet with dirt paths that all end at the incredible dunes that separate you from spectacular Lake Michigan! The large screened-in, wrap-around porch with a fireplace, allows you to enjoy the outdoors during any type of weather. The beach is walking distance away giving you the option of conquering the dunes by climbing over them or sneaking through woods to get there. Either way, you end up on the uncrowded, white sand beach where you can lounge, play in the lake or take a walk to nearby Van Buren State Park. (And don't miss the sensational sunsets!!!)

Lealiou Lodge is on 1.5 acres tucked away in a wooded area. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs, sleeping 9: a queen bed in the master with its own bathroom; a double/twin bunk bed and trundel beds in one room - perfect for kids; and a queen bed in the 3rd bedroom. Ceiling fans are in all bedrooms. There is another full bath up there as well. On the first floor, there is a bedroom with a queen bed, and a full bath.

The kitchen hosts a granite island that seats 4, granite counter tops, a dishwasher, complete set of pots and pans and all the dishes and glasses you would need. There is a dining table that will seat 10 for those late night card games! If you feel like watching TV or taking in a movie, there is a DVD player AND a VCR player - lots of movies as well. Board games for family fun out on the screened porch are plentiful too. Firewood is provided for the spacious fire pit in the front yard and if more is needed, it is sold just down the road. The grassy area to the north of the house is ideal for a wiffle ball game, while the sand court behind the house beckons you to a down and dirty game of sand volleyball or badminton. This is a perfect setting for families to spend time together playing games or roasting marshmallows over the campfire.

The Lealiou Lodge is available all year long. There are some great family ski areas within an hours drive. Sledding down the dunes and exploring the spectacular coastline while under ice is something you cannot imagine. Then warm up with the wood burning/gas fireplace inside.

This is a perfect place for friends and family to gather. Once you have experienced it, we hope you will want to come back year after year. Our family has been coming up here for 30 years. We bought the property in 1996 and camped on it until we were able to build our dream house. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we do.

About Lynn Lealiou

My husband and I have been married 28 years and have 3 great kids. Due to the fact that my brother bought a cottage in this area 37 years ago, we came up often with the kids and loved it. We bought the land in 1996 and when mortgage rates fell in 2010, we decided it was time to build. My husband is a finish carpenter and really put his heart into this house. He did the interior all himself. It is our home away from home, which is in Oak Park Illinois.

Beautiful large home set back in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Lynn's place is beautiful. We were a group of ten friends who stayed there over Fourth of July weekend. We hung out in the wrap around porch playing games or out on the huge lawn. The house has a sand volleyball court that we also took advantage of and a fire pit out front. Lynn was very responsive from start to finish. The house is set back in the woods so you don't really see your neighbors. South Haven is a quick ten min drive from the house. If we had more time we would have liked to explore the town more.

Good to Knows:

1. The beach is a short walk away but involves climbing some very steep dunes.

2. The beach is a bit rocky so bring chairs.

3. No wifi and minimal phone service for most carriers (at least as of July 2017). Big plus if you are looking to disconnect but if you need to be connected, plan accordingly

The BEST!

  • 5 of 5

We've come back three or four years in a row, and this year we have two visits planned. A short walk (up a dune) to Lake Michigan to an almost private beach. The PORCH is amazing! Peaceful. tranquil. And beautiful finishing touches throughout the home.

I only hesitate to say such nice things because we want to keep this the best kept secret in South Haven ;)

Perfect Getaway for a Group of Friends or Family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for the 4th of July weekend. It was such a relaxing and fun weekend. We couldn't have been happier with the house.

Pros:

- Huge wrap around porch. One of our friends actually ended up sleeping out here on the futon.

- Sand volleyball court. Enough said.

- Huge yard, including a fire pit and plenty of space for bags and other yard games.

- Plenty of space inside the house. The bedrooms are all a decent size, and having 3 bathrooms was huge.

- The kitchen was very well stocked with plenty of spices and other necessities

Cons:

- The beach is very rocky. The listing is upfront about that, but I don't think we were mentally prepared for just how rocky the sand and water would be. It's also a journey to get there with the massive sand dunes. There are two paths. One involves going over massive sand dunes (two times) and there's no way to do it without being completely winded. The second path is less taxing, but you have to repel down the side of a dune. We are all in our 30's and able to get there okay (not without blood, sweat and tears), but I'm not sure how we'd fare in 10 years.

- Ticks! I ended up finding a tick on myself so wear hats and bug repellent when walking to the dunes or hanging outside.

- There's no wi-fi and the service is nonexistent. We had to go into town to get a signal for texting.

If you don't mind driving to the beach in town or if the beach is not high on your priority list, this place is great! South Haven is such a cute little town. I wish we had more time to check out the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you were happy with the house and porch! We absolutely love it! The beach has changed so much over the last year. It was at one time all white sand. We're hoping we get back to that soon. We never know until the spring. I agree it can be a challenge to go over the dunes, but exercise is great for you!!!! Through the woods is not difficult, but there are bugs. Thanks for choosing our home! We really appreciate it! Hope to hear from you again!!! Lynn & Tom

A great place for friends to gather

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of 7 college friends who have gotten together for a reunion at the Lealiou Lodge for the last three years. It meets our needs very well with ample bedrooms, well-equipped kitchen and many places to sit and talk both inside, on the porch and outside. It is clean and well-maintained and Lynn is very helpful in answering any of our questions. We usually make a trip into town to the well-stocked supermarket and to enjoy the little shops. I would highly recommend this property to families or groups of friends.

Wonderful time was had by all!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 11; grandparents, children, grandchildren & extended family who stayed here over Labor Day weekend. The house was perfect for us. It was well-equipped with entertainment media, the kitchen with supplies & bedrooms with towels. My son & I admired the finishing touches of carpentry in the house. Most of our time was spent on the amazing porch complete with a fireplace, a place to play checkers & plenty of places to read a good book.

The only difficulty we had was navigating the dune to get to the beach. It is very steep. People with impaired mobility may not be able to manage it. There are no stairs, merely a rope to grab.

The owner, Lynn, was very helpful. Thank you for a terrific weekend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words! The porch is truly amazing and great to relax on, play games, or eat, on. My husband will be very happy that you noticed his craftsmanship! The dune is steep this year. We have never seen it like this in the past 35 plus years. Every year it seems to change. My husband put the rope up to help people, but stairs would be a great asset. I am hoping that next year things will be different. Thanks again and we hope you come back! Lynn & Tom

Great Family Vacation Week!

  • 4 of 5

We 11 were 3 generations from age 6 to age 74 who enjoyed the many features of the home and property such as sand lot volleyball, fire pit s'mores, movies available that were appropriate and fun for all ages, games, puzzles, well stocked kitchen, abundant ceiling and portable fans, spending time at the beautiful sandy beach next to the light house in town, indulging in scrumptious Sherman's ice cream at the beach, enjoying collecting and skipping beautiful rocks at the beach through the woods and/or over the dune. We picked freshly ripened blueberries a mile down the road in July. MMM good! There are some great workmanship features on the remodeled sections of the home and porch. We ate on the porch every night by candlelight (candles and tea lights provided!). We fared well but central air could be more important if it is hotter than low to mid 80's. An updated wifi could be a plus but is not essential to a fun getaway/gathering. Any questions we had about what to expect or what we needed were quickly answered or provided by Lynn or her helpers who lived nearby. We really enjoyed our time at Lealiou Lodge! We would definitely recommend a vacation here.

Our property is tucked away in the woods making it very quiet and private. We have a sand volley ball court in the back and a huge wrap around screened in deck to relax and listen to nature. The beach is a short walk either over the dunes or through the woods.

South Haven, a quaint town only a 10 minutes drive away or bike ride away offers lots of shops, restaurants, wine tastings, festivals, a public beach, and a really neat all wooden play ground
