This cottage was built in the 60's, has been renovated, has original kitchen, is very cute and clean. Has an outdoor shower plus an indoor shower. Has central air and heat. This place is awesome! If you like to ride bikes, take walks on the beach, look for sea glass and arrowheads, bird watch, or just sit on the screen porch and read a book, this place is for you.

If you love to fish, we catch rock fish right off the pier. The pier is private, owned by the homeowners. We catch catch flounder, spot, croaker and tons of other salt water fish.

Do you enjoy the water, use our 2 kayaks (8' sit-on) and go exploring on the bay, 3 sandbars are in front of the cottage, it's fun to use the kayaks to go to each sandbar. There also fishing nets way out there, its fun to kayak out to them and see all the birds flying around the nets.

Are you bringing your pet? We welcome pets/dogs if they are on a regular flea treatment program and all shots are up to date. We charge a $35.00 fee for each pet. We have a doggie door in screen in porch.

About Rangeley Thornton

My husband and I purchased this cottage in 1999. We wanted a place close to Richmond where we could spend fun family time cooking out, fishing, swimming in the bay. This cottage has been all of that and more. Looking out on a huge backyard with grass, trees and a white sandy beach, it is awesome!

Rangeley Thornton purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Rangeley Thornton chose Virginia

The cottage rests on an acre lot, on a private street at the end of a cul de sac. Great street for riding bikes. We have 3 adult bikes in the toolshed for you to use. We have our own private fishing pier with lights and water on pier. We have 2 8' sit on kayaks with life vests for your use.

What makes this cottage unique

We built a fishing pier in 2005 with lights and a fish cleaning station. It also has a lower level to put in crab pots. The pots are located behind our toolshed. We have a crab cooking pot in the cottage. Children love to jump off the lower level into the bay and swim back to shore. We also have 2 kayaks for our renters use.

I LOVE THIS COTTAGE! BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF WATER CAUGHT TONS OF FISH OFF PIER

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this wonderful cottage for several weeks. The cottage is adorable, so clean and comfortable, with beautiful views of the water. We loved everything about it.

The pier is amazing, water, lights and a fish cleaning station. We caught so many fish every morning and evening. Nice sandy white beach also. We used the owners nice crab pots and caught crabs also. We used the kayaks everyday, they are great. Went on bike rides. No one in my family wanted to leave. We are definitely coming back here next year. I've finally found the most relaxing, clean and comfortable cottage, easy place to catch fish right off my own private pier, we all loved our stay here. The owners are also very helpful, answered all my questions, very nice and kind.

Hard to find a better relaxing place!

  • 5 of 5

The house was spotless, the grass was trimmed, the air was fragrant, the water was warmer than the air (no jellyfish at all). The air conditioner was not needed, because the breeze cooled off the house if all windows were opened. No flies, no mosquitos, but anyway the veranda is protected by the screens. Excellent fishing (including crabs). All appliances are clean, and in good working conditions.

Special thank you from our Boxer-girl dog for the paradise of free running, swimming, and hunting eagles (no success).

Thanks to the owner for our pleasure of staying in this nice cottage.

Alex and Helen.

Beautiful Views! however, renter beware! Sewer backup problem, bug problems, dirty and primitive

  • 1 of 5

Renter Beware!! I do not like to write negative comments, but after speaking to the owner to include emailing pictures of the standing sewer water, sink that would not drain and many other issues in the cottage, I felt this was necessary. Pictures do not lie. The owners deny everything I sent them. Don't believe when they say it's been renovated, that was a very, very long time ago! The entire cottage is made of cement blocks, the owner did tell me the sewer was from the "60's". Musty smelling even though it only rained one day. Sewer standing in the front yard each time we used the washing machine or took a shower. The shower is another story by itself. Very primitive, looked like they had repaired the cement walls inside the shower and forgot to finish painting. Bedrooms left a lot to be desired. I'm happy we brought our own blankets because the bedspreads, mattress covers, dust ruffles had not been cleaned and had stains. King size and twin bed mattresses had large stains and need to be replaced. Area rugs were so old they were coming apart. Carpet in the bedrooms was old, stained and had sand. Sofa was from the "70's", we had to put a blanket over it because we felt like the dust mites/bed bugs were all over it. Pillows were the same way. Dishes in the kitchen cabinets had to be washed before use they were sticky with residue from not being properly washed. The door leading to the side porch looked like it had been attacked by wild animals, the paint was coming off and needed a good sanding and painting. Doors to the laundry/pantry room didn't match anything, it looked like they found some old unfinished wood doors. The side porch furniture was so old you could tell it had been painted at one time and the paint had been completely worn off. Furniture was old on the porch. When one of the toilets were being flushed a gurgling noise would come from the kitchen sink. Water was slow to drain from the sinks in the bathrooms and kitchen. They would benefit from getting a good plummer and having the sewer cleaned! Crab pots are very old, kayaks are not the typical kayaks, they are more for little kids. It's obvious the owners are interested in how much money they can make without having to spend any to fix the problems in this cottage. We would have called VRBO the first day but my 84 year mother is not able to move that easily and my husband is a disabled vet. It could be a cute cottage with a complete renovation and new furniture.

Owner's Response: This review is unfortunate for such a beautiful place. This renters first booking request was denied due to her unreasonable demands of renting. I then accepted her 2nd request when she agreed to the terms and conditions of our rental agreement. Our septic and plumbing in the cottage is just fine, the renter washed so many loads of clothes everyday and overloaded the washing machine that it caused a back up in our french drain. We have pergo flooring in the cottage, crab pots purchased 2016, carpet 2015. Our communication with this renter was exhausting. I hope next year she can find a better fit for her summer vacation needs.

Best of Both, Nice Sandy Beach and Dock

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage. The weather was awesome, dodged a few thunderstorms but overall great weather. The Chesapeake Bay was beautiful day and night. A very nice sandy beach gave us a feeling of being at the Outer Banks with the rolling waves coming in. Some days the water was very still which was nice to paddle board and kayak. The jellyfish gave us a break at the end of the week, although, they really are not a threat, just a minor brush burn that goes away in a few minutes. The house is rustic, but provides great showers, ample sleeping room and just enough kitchen. Thank you for the clean grill to cook on! We paddled the kayaks everyday, biked most of the mornings, lounged on the sun porch and had happy hour on the grassy edge of the yard or on the sandy beach under our tent. The neighbors are extremely friendly and gave us a good information of the area. Had a blast watching online the Marine traffic, the ships passing by in front of the cottage. (www.marinetraffic.com). Quiet and clean, I highly recommend this place if you want to get away from it all!
