Lovely oasis amidst a coffee estate run by our kind and gracious hosts, Brad and Linda. We stayed a week in their Honu Cottage, which I would highly recommend if you have a full week to truly experience island life in Captain Cook! I grew up in the Philippines so South Kona was a happy reminder of my childhood on the island. We loved everything about our cottage! From the outdoor kitchen to the private balcony with ocean views to the clean, comfortable room, the sauna and the outdoor tub to the abundant papayas, bananas, soursop fruits, and macadamia nuts we were allowed to eat and to the heavenly Kona coffee that the estate organicly grows and produces. We woke up each morning with a sense of calm and left with a sense of happiness. Our stay was priceless....
But what really made our week in South Kona so special was Brad and Linda's generous nature (and their three gorgeous dogs) in welcoming us to their retreat! They embodied the Aloha spirit!
When we first arrived at south kona coffee we immediately fell in love with the place. There is a welcome sign that had our names on it. It's very touching and make us feel so special. and then Brad showed up and led us to the cottage.
There are two cottages with it own private bathroom and shared out door kitchen. We stayed at the Dolphin cottage,it was very clean, very comfortable bed and screened windows allowed us to have plenty of air. There is a large refrigerator, flat screen TV,toaster, microwave, coffee maker and French press. The Fruit plate, kona coffee, macadamia nuts were so delicious and much appreciated. Especially, their kona coffee was the best I've ever had!!!
We loved all the nature sound, view of the sunset, friendly green geckos, fruit trees surround us and we also enjoyed hiking on the lava flow near by the property.
Brad was a great host full of information on the island. This place is about 45 minutes to an hour drive from Kona airport. It's far enough from a tourists crowded and yet close enough to the most beautiful beaches and about halfway to volcano national park.
Thank you so much Brad for your hospitality and all of your tips on places to explore were great. We couldn't asked for a better host on our one week vacation. You have made our 10 years Anniversary very special and unforgettable. We will be back and stay here again.
My husband and I had an awesome time and we are so thankful to have found this beautiful heaven. It's really is Paradise! Thank you Brad and Linda for making us feel very welcome, every little touch here furnishings, candles, fruits, great coffee is just perfect. The bed was very comfortable and clean, The out door bathroom & kitchen was so cool, easy to use and had everything we needed. Brad was very helpful and he gave us some advice and details where to visit and best place to eat.
We went to Honaunau (two-steps) beach for breath taking snorkling,it's like swimming in a huge fish tank. My husband saw a turtle swimming around. We also enjoyed the beach at Ho'okena and Magic sand. if you going to the Volcano national park, Please try going on the Kilauea Iki trail for two hours walk,it's just a completely different world. We just wish we could stayed longer :(
We will definitely be back and highly recommend this place!
We stayed at the whale cottage for 5 nights. Great location for seeing all the sites on the Kona coast side. Brad is a gracious host. He asked what type of coffee we prefer and that blend was ready for us to enjoy in the room as well as a complimentary bowl of fresh fruit. We really enjoyed the fact that we were allowed to roam around his property to pick any fruits we like. There are so many different kind of fruit trees (Papaya, banana, grapefruit, pineapple, mango and many more...and some fruit were not in season while we were there, but we're lucky enough to had some fresh papayas and mangoes everyday. They were super sweet and tasty!!! Brad gave us some tips as well about where to visit and where to eat. Super chill and relaxed atmosphere. Exactly as pictured with the exception of the stunning tiled outdoor feeling bathroom that the whale cottage has. Not to disappoint. The garden of nature's bounty surrounded us and provided us with a new respect for the land, it's gifts, and the simplicity life offers.
Brad and Linda were awesome. This was my second time. This time, I brought my daughter and her new fiance. (they got engaged during this trip :) ) As usual, the place was super clean and ready for use. stocked with homegrown coffee, LITERALLY. The place was made to feel like our home. Anything we needed, Brad was there for us.
The place is kinda centrally located. not really near anything, (but that's the point), but it is about half way between Kailua-Kona and Volcano National Park. Definitely stock up on some supplies for breakfasts and dinners. I suggest granola to put onto the mango, papaya fruit for breakfast. I also suggest some rice and chili and some fish for BBQ for dinners. Creme for the coffee if you like.
Other then that, plenty to do if you plan it out right.
This was our first stay at the SKC plantation in one of the short-term rental cabins near the highway. Cabin (or upscale cabana structure) was clean and comfortable. Our king-sized bed felt great at the end of the day. The room had large screened windows on one side with rattan shades that you could lower at night. Entry door is a sliding door which we kept closed so mosquitoes didn't wander in. On the wall to the left of the door was a large refrigerator, and shelving above with a microwave, coffee maker & French press. *Excellent* fruit (mangoes, apple bananas, papaya ) was provided on a plate and kona coffee when we arrived in the room, plus a welcome sign! The bathroom next door was surrounded by giant tree and other plants, very clean and had fancy ceramic tiling all over walls/floor. The outdoor kitchen was clean, easy to use, and well-stocked with everything we needed, and we used it almost every night, grilling swordfish & Mahimahi that we picked up at a local market "Choice Smart". Brad was careful to place long-burn mosquito coils around the buildings and walkways day and night, so we had very little problems with the insects. He was also friendly and generous with information and advice about the area, especially local beaches and markets. He brought additional fruit to us when asked. We enjoyed watching all of the geckoes on the railing and near the kitchen. During our stay we visited nearby beaches, especially for snorkling at Ho'okena and Two Step (near the Place of Refuge): get there early in the morning (best before 8:00am) before it gets crowded and limited parking space disappears. Ho'okena has very warm outdoor showers on one side of the parking lot for rinse-off.
Overall,We really had a wonderful time and experiences. Thank you Brad and Linda for created this magical hideaway. We will return next year for our 2nd anniversary. If you're looking for a quiet, good environment and less tourists crowded, This place will be perfect for you.
