Why Marsha Carlton chose Virginia

Mathews / Gloucester Courthouse area is filled with miles of pristine water coastline and friendly owner-run businesses.

Yet you are less than an hour to major airports, world-class museums, golf and theme parks. The abundance of locally available seafood, wine & produce is our favorite part of this area!

What makes this house unique

The North River is the gold coast of the area, lined with historic farms and equestrian properties. Whether you want to fish, sail, kayak, bike, paddleboard or stretch out in a hammock, this is a perfect location.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed ourselves at your house, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever

slept in. We got to watch the bald eagle hunt almost every morning.

It was so quiet and peaceful.

We were amazed at how little boat traffic was on the river, that is what makes your place unique.

Navigation on the river was not a problem, there are enough markers so you can stay in the channel. They do have an oyster reef that is marked about a mile down from the house, you

need to stay to the right heading down the river. Fishing was fantastic! We caught lots of big speckled trout down in Mobjack Bay heading toward the East River. The dock is one of

the best we have ever used and the boat ramp is very convenient.

It was also nice catching crabs while sitting on the dock watching the sunset. Nice crabs!

The River House

  • 5 of 5

We have made a weeklong trip a family tradition. We were fortunate enough to discover the “River House” this year and we have settled on using it every year from now on. We won’t have to wait in line at Disney World or fight traffic in cities. The River House (as we have dubbed it) is perfect.

We don’t have to travel far for amenities as Glouster is just a short ride down the road. The week we spent was the most relaxing we all have had in a very long time. My wife, Lynda and I relaxed, we read and just took advantage of the quiet to rediscover our children and grandchildren.

The facilities in the house were top shelf. The children took advantage of all the facilities, they played ping pong, used the kayaks, played the many games that were available for us and we all took advantage of the proximity to the beautiful North River. My grandson was up at the crack of dawn each morning to try to catch the “big one”. Our three granddaughters made and remade their faces and just enjoyed the chance to be together every day.

We cooked inside and out and honestly expanded our waistlines a bit (but we all know that vacations are designed for that). All in all, the River House provided a quiet relaxing getaway for children of all ages. We senior adults just loved the facilities and we look forward to our next trip.

I cannot say enough about this house.

  • 5 of 5

I've been home for 2 days, and I miss this vacation more than just about any other. We spent two days at Busch Gardens, and if not for the kids, I would have rather stayed at the residence the entire time. We caught fish, kayaked, paddle boarded, and just relaxed. The pool wasn't even open yet, and still it was perfect. The beds were soooo comfortable, the kitchen was super, the yard was great for some baseball. Again, I can't say enough, and plan to be back.

Greeaaat Stay in V.A!

  • 5 of 5

Omg this was honestly one of , if the not best stay I have ever had with my Family. The house was totally equipped with whatever we needed, besides what was required to bring. The House was gorgeous and set up just right, the grounds with the Lake were perfect, even for November. I would love to be there during mid summer. In a nutshell it is all that it says it is, +++. Would Highly recommend this house for a getaway, if even for 3 or 4 days. Great Adventures to You All!

Our Annual Fall Gathering

  • 5 of 5

Three couples who are longtime friends made a trip to the lovely waterfront house on the North River. Unfortunately, our fourth couple was unable to make it this year at the last minute. The accommodations were just perfect for our group. The things to see in the area are so numerous that we will have to do this again to see more. So, the house had a fabulous kitchen which was so well stocked and easy to work in. We actually did quite a bit of cooking there. The beds were so nice and comfy and each couple had plenty of space and great views of the river. A very peaceful area and a nice time of the year to be in that area. We did the Williamsburg visit, the Jamestown visit, and a boat tour of the Hampton Roads Harbor, which was almost my favorite thing to do. We were leaving just as Matthew the hurricane was heading up the coast but fortunately it did not get that far and I doubt that the property was affected at all. We would definitely return to this great, beautifully decorated home.

The Perfect Destination in Mathews Va

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a TV in each bedroom, this may not be the place for you. BUT if you are looking for a gorgeous and comfortable place to relax, this is the place for you, and your family. The pool is large with plenty of room for everyone to have fun with an abundance of floaties and pool toys. The dock is long, and a great place to fish, set off on the kayaks, or bring your chair and watch the fabulous sunset. The house comes fully equipped for cooking just about anything. This made planning meals a cinch! Or try some of the local suggestions. There are more choices than you will have time to visit. And there is a TV in the comfy family room, which is perfect for watching a movie.

You are only 15 minutes from Gloucester and Matthews, or 45 minutes from Williamsburg and Yorktown.

We took a boat tour up the East River and learned of former owners of properties and plantations, all while getting a taste of some local oysters.

This is THE place for you to bring family and friends and make lasting and wonderful memories. If you are like our family, you will want to plan you next trip down here asap. There are so many details that have been thought of for your enjoyment at this rental..it clearly makes it a one-of-a-kind destination.

Lovely, relaxing escape

  • 4 of 5

The home in Mathews, VA is a lovely place to just kick back and relax. There are water views from practically every window. The front porch, with its swing and table with chairs was a great place to sit with a book and a drink and just enjoy the day. We all had a blast down on the dock using the provided crab traps. Such fun! We also took the kayaks out and had a blast on the water. Great way to exercise and feel relaxed at the same time. Finally, the pool... it was a terrific way for all of us to beat the heat and again, simply relax. This is a great away from it all type of location. If you don't want to deal with hustle and bustle or tourist traps this is certainly the place. The home itself is large, comfortable, clean and beautifully appointed. Plenty of towels, washer/dryer, fully loaded kitchen... everything you'd need is at your disposal. We had a really good time here and would recommend it. One word of advice though... be wary of a local bug... chiggers... They are outside in the grass and can really give a nasty bite which is rather itchy. We all found out the hard way. Just mind where you sit and perhaps use bug spray. This is not in any way a negative against the house... we were informed by a local pharmacist that these bugs are everywhere down here. But, that was the only downside to our whole trip. A wonderful time was had by all in this great home.
