Why Marsha Carlton chose Virginia

Mathews / Gloucester Courthouse area is filled with miles of pristine water coastline and friendly owner-run businesses.

Yet you are less than an hour to major airports, world-class museums, golf and theme parks. The abundance of locally available seafood, wine & produce is our favorite part of this area!

What makes this house unique

The North River is the gold coast of the area, lined with historic farms and equestrian properties. Whether you want to fish, sail, kayak, bike, paddleboard or stretch out in a hammock, this is a perfect location.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed ourselves at your house, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever

slept in. We got to watch the bald eagle hunt almost every morning.

It was so quiet and peaceful.

We were amazed at how little boat traffic was on the river, that is what makes your place unique.

Navigation on the river was not a problem, there are enough markers so you can stay in the channel. They do have an oyster reef that is marked about a mile down from the house, you

need to stay to the right heading down the river. Fishing was fantastic! We caught lots of big speckled trout down in Mobjack Bay heading toward the East River. The dock is one of

the best we have ever used and the boat ramp is very convenient.

It was also nice catching crabs while sitting on the dock watching the sunset. Nice crabs!

Lovely, relaxing escape

  • 4 of 5

The home in Mathews, VA is a lovely place to just kick back and relax. There are water views from practically every window. The front porch, with its swing and table with chairs was a great place to sit with a book and a drink and just enjoy the day. We all had a blast down on the dock using the provided crab traps. Such fun! We also took the kayaks out and had a blast on the water. Great way to exercise and feel relaxed at the same time. Finally, the pool... it was a terrific way for all of us to beat the heat and again, simply relax. This is a great away from it all type of location. If you don't want to deal with hustle and bustle or tourist traps this is certainly the place. The home itself is large, comfortable, clean and beautifully appointed. Plenty of towels, washer/dryer, fully loaded kitchen... everything you'd need is at your disposal. We had a really good time here and would recommend it. One word of advice though... be wary of a local bug... chiggers... They are outside in the grass and can really give a nasty bite which is rather itchy. We all found out the hard way. Just mind where you sit and perhaps use bug spray. This is not in any way a negative against the house... we were informed by a local pharmacist that these bugs are everywhere down here. But, that was the only downside to our whole trip. A wonderful time was had by all in this great home.

Great house in a Great location

  • 4 of 5

Finding this house was a dream come true. It was a beautiful location, close to great Virginia historical places for day trips. My family of 9 was comfortable with room enough for everyone which included 3 teenage girls with huge bathroom demands. We loved every minute using all of the amenities available at the property, especially the pool. The best time of year for this location is not July because of the heat and humidity, but we managed to have a great time. Thanks for a great Family vacation that will always be remembered!

OUTSTANDING!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful farmhouse on the water. The house is very comfortable with a lot of activities to do without leaving the property. We enjoyed swimming in the pool, jumping off the dock into the river, crabbing, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, bomb fires, and family games. The owner was very welcoming and made sure that we were happy and well taken care of. We will definitely be returning!!

Beautiful, clean, and well thought out!

  • 5 of 5

This was the first vacation that our entire family has taken all together. We have a blended family. I have 3 daughters and my husband has twins (boy and a girl). This home was the perfect setup for us! Marsha thought of everything! We followed her directions for the way to take into town. We were able to go to the little produce stand/farmer's market and purchase a few things for our stay. We also stopped at the Food Lion grocery store. Our trip was very enjoyable. We all loved the pool and the kayaks, and had a couple of fun day trips while we were there. Thank you Marsha! We definitely want to come back!

Amazing views and perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our three generations of family members all enjoyed our time at the farm house. Staying here was a great experience. So close to the water and with a grand view of the North River. Everything you want in a vacation home! The home was well taken of and very clean. There was everything we needed and offered privacy from neighbors. Marsha was easy to work with, so kind and suggested all the right places to go.

We enjoyed fishing and the first day on the dock we caught 17 fish in less than 2 hours. We had so much fun crabbing, it was amazing we even brought them up using worms on the rods. But our biggest crab was caught in the crab pot.

This trip will be remembered as one of our best vacations ever. We hope to be back in the near future. I highly recommend this rental for a comfortable and relaxing vacation.

What a great week!

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of 8 women who meet annually in locations around the world. Our choice this year was the Chesapeake Bay area and boy were we lucky to find this house. It is beautifully appointed but it's also very homey. The beds were like clouds. The kitchen was equipped for cooking. The property is right on the river and offers spectacular views and sunsets. It was an easy drive to Jamestown and Williamsburg and there were really good restaurants and wineries nearby too.

The owner was available and made sure that all our needs were met. We had such a good time! What a gem!!
