*** This house also rents for 1500-3000 a day for events like weddings and parties ( 75 people and under)
Jim and I have owned this house for over ten years. We live here most of the time with our two girls and many animals. We rent it out when travel, and we leave the house clean and uncluttered because we use home away when we travel and know what it is like to live in someone else's space. Jim is a cabinet maker and has a shop in a barn on the property. I am a therapist, and Bodyworker and have a studio here. Our side passion is growing food, gardening, and cooking. You will find the property well set up with fresh eggs, seasonal fruits and veggies, and a well equipped kitchen.
We fell in love with the ancient silver maple that is in the middle of the yard, the number of acres for farming and hiking about in the woods, the privacy of the yard, courtyards, and gardens, and the charm of the old home.
You can hike, swim in a lake five minutes away, swim in the sounds five minutes away, horse back ride at local barns with trails, visit the near-by winery, eat vegetables out of our garden and eggs from the chickens. The House enjoys a beautiful rural setting, but it is five minutes from outlets, I-95, and 25 minutes from New Haven, 90 miles from NYC and Boston, and 30 minutes from Mystic.
Pure magic in New England... and a place to make beautiful memories. We had a marvelous stay in this property in August 2015. Not only is the house utterly charming and furnished with delightful taste; it is also remarkably spacious and superbly equipped (the kitchen is the dream of any cook or baker... There is everything, and even a powerful blender to make all your summer smoothies). We spend 10 heavenly days there - we were five: a family of three and our parents visiting from France, and we had more space than enough. Our parents from France were totally amazed by the magic and the calm of the place. We would pick vegetables from the patch and eggs from the chicken coop, cook healthy meals (vegetable frittatas and sprightly salads!) and have them outside, surrounded by a beautiful nature and accompanied by all the animals - chickens, cats and two adorable goats, Phoebe and Beatrice, two tender and smart creatures! Their presence makes this the perfect place to stay with kids. We also threw some dinner parties outside: there are two fantastic grills outside and the garden is all lighted up with lanterns in the summer evenings...
Also, the location is great: it is very close to the Connecticut shoreline - we went every day to the beach -; a short drive from Chester and its fabulous restaurants (River Tavern!) or from New Haven and its intellectual pleasures; and not far from NYC for an urban excursion if there are amateurs.
Sarah and Jim were the most welcoming hosts. Jim is a remarkable furniture maker, and he was always there to help us; he even taught our daughter many things about working with wood. Between the beach, her visits to the chickens and Phoebe and Beatrice, her exploration of all the nature around, she had a memorable stay and still talks about "the house with the goats in Connecticut."
We plan to come back in the summer and we cannot wait to stay there again. I very highly recommend this place.
Our family had a wonderful stay at this charming old house, enjoyed the fresh eggs, used the grill and hot tub, the patio for outdoor meals, and were very happy with all the spacious living rooms especially for our teenagers who could spread out their games and electronics and watch DVDs without disturbing grown-ups. Also appreciated so many bedrooms and baths. The kitchen is huge and well equipped. We went swimming several times at Hammonasett's uncrowded beach, and browsed shops in Madison and Guilford.
In Madison a favorite spot was Ashley's ice cream.
My personal favorites were relaxing on the lounge chair on the patio, gazing up at the magnificent trees and listening to the birds (oh that guinea hen!!) and breakfast in the sunny nook on the window seat. Our visit was a treat for the whole family.
thank you for sharing your home with us. It was beautiful! the location was perfect only 6 mile to the beach and all the activities we could need. The house was clean and well tended. there was a basket full of information on the area. the owners were there daily to take care of the property and animals so all questions could be answered right away. I would recommend this property to all. however those who enjoy a quiet sanctuary will really enjoy it. We loved the property grounds most of all. I picked raspberries every morning and some kind of veggie every night.. we even enjoyed fresh eggs for breakfast. there are several seating areas to enjoy.we tried a new one each day. the turkey gave us some wonderful entertainment as well..
we would love to stay again next year... it was truly a little bit of heaven.
This house is very spacious and has many surprising spaces and nooks to relax. Art and a substantial library, well preserved original floors and a fantastic kitchen, ensured a good time for our family of 5 ( three teenage and college age kids) without feeling crowded. We mostly enjoyed the amazing grounds around the house. We loved the beautifully landscaped fountain, walking around the ponds, in the woods and mostly sitting under the huge gorgeous tree to contemplate life while free roaming chickens and ducks came clucking around us. We used fresh eggs and vegetables form the garden to cook meals. The owners are very helpful and attentive to every detail. A true Marie-Antoinette domain in a quiet town not far from the beach, restaurants and shopping.
We loved every moment!
My family and I stayed at this beautiful house over the New Year holiday. We spent the majority of our time on the property itself, building snowmen, having snowball fights, skating on the frozen ponds. At the end of our day, we would walk into the house, and warm up next to the wood burning stoves. It was a perfect getaway.
The house itself was a quaint house that definitely had the feel of a 100 year+ house. We loved it. The house had plenty of space for this family of 6, and lots of charm. The owners were very helpful, and readily available for any questions. They truly make you feel as though it is your home.
We enjoyed every moment of our stay, and would love to experience the house in the summer.
Priceless and unforgettable memories were made at this charming, homey and comfortable historic home where my family of eight spent five days at Christmastime. The house was spacious and well appointed with the kitchen being equipped with everything needed to prepare an old fashioned Christmas dinner. Everyone enjoyed pitching in helping to build fires in the many fireplaces, especially the grandchildren who also loved feeding the chickens, ducks, and guineas. We were just a short distance from town and the train station where we took a train to New York one afternoon. The owners were very warm and hospitable. Their home provided a most memorable Chistmas for us all. I highly recommend this property for a quaint, relaxing setting where nearby attractions abound.
