Overview

Shaftsbury Barn Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mt. Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, and an occasional black bear that wanders through the property. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove, microwave, refrigerator, dish washer, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a spring mattress futon. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and viewable from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

Why Lars chose Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

Relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

What a delight! This is a place to utterly relax and unwind. A peaceful, bucolic setting with every comfort and amenity. I thought I was going to hike and pour on the exercise but I could do little more than sit outside in the Adirondack rockers and enjoy the scenery. Once I got going, it was to drive around to soak in the scenery and shop in Bennington and Manchester. Evenings were spent playing Trivial Pursuit with my 2 young adult offspring. We made a bonfire on a chilly June night. Our two dogs had the time of their lives being able to go outside with no leash, with plenty of lawn to run and play. Our host, Lars, was always accessible and helpful. Groceries were a 10 minute ride away. For a small group, this is a wonderful retreat.

Lovely retreat, yet close to everything

  • 5 of 5

I grew up in the area and was returning for a family visit. We are delighted to have found this property. It feels very secluded and yet is located close to town (approximately 10 minutes to "down street"/Main Street and only 5 minutes from restaurants and grocery stores. It far exceeded our expectations. The house is beautifully decorated and has several well furnished areas to hang out in. It feels very spacious and is stocked with all the necessary supplies for cooking. Any questions we had were quickly answered by Lars, he is great to work with. Also, our deposit was quickly refunded.

We enjoyed the multiple outdoor seating areas for night sky viewing and birdwatching. We strolled each day on the walking paths around the grounds. We just wish we had more time to spend here. We will be back!

The Best of All Worlds

  • 5 of 5

This cozy place is the best all worlds for a great stay in southwestern Vermont. It offers just the right amount of seclusion while being close enough to see some of the cool towns in the region.

Lars, the owner, is responsive and gracious and accommodated my request to stay on short notice. The place is super clean, well-furnished, the kitchen is welll-stocked, and there is a generous amount of firewood to use in the wood-burning stove or the outside fire pits. The six-acre grounds hold charming surprises along the trails, and you'll want to spend as much time outside as possible. The stargazing is wonderful. There are plenty of hiking options within a 15-minute drive. And it's close enough to stores to make errand-running simple and quick. Enjoy!

The most fantastic vacation we could imagine

  • 5 of 5

The barn was exactly what we imagined and more, and it was even better that our dogs could join us and romp the trails. The bath by the window is perfect, and the automatic fireplace in the bedroom was a dream. If only we knew how to work the wood burning stove and the cooking stove better, but we made due. :) The directions and info from the owner were super helpful, and he was so nice and communicative the entire time, making sure we made it in okay and if we enjoyed our stay. I hope we can visit again in the summer or fall to experience the apple trees in full bloom. I LOVE THIS PLACE!

Wonderful, expectation-exceeding cabin

  • 5 of 5

We (two adults) had a perfect getaway to this converted barn. It is even more beautiful in person than in the photos, and, as other reviewers have said, you feel like you have the whole area to yourself. The barn is tucked back from a small side road and you can't see any neighbors; the view is of a mountain and surrounding pasture and forests. The place itself is full of lovely touches and has clearly been built/renovated with a lot of love and care. Very comfortable bed, plus both a shower and a clawfoot bathtub (with a mountain view), a loft with cable/on demand TV, stacks of games, books on the bookshelf, and a lovely little kitchen with a small dishwasher and small washer and dryer. Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed. Lars is very responsive and helpful, and refunded my security deposit immediately (no need to be nervous about that). Also, check out the Market Wagon nearby - a small Amish-run shop with homemade bread, lots of grains/baking supplies, pickled goods, and candies. A great spot.

The barn over exceeded our expectations!!!! Very very nice!

  • 5 of 5

We live in Florida and our 4 and 7 yo boys wanted to see snow. That's why we booked this barn in Vermont in the hope of a lot of snow....As we arrived in upstate NY in January 2016 there was no snow...So we were a bit disappointed...BUT...as we arrived at the barn we were so happy to be there. The barn is amazing and way better then you see it at the presented pictures. It was very very cold at these days but we used the provided wood to heat up the two fireplaces and it was sooo cozy and nice there. We loved the specious floor plan, played board games in front of the main fireplace and enjoyed to cook in the very well equipped kitchen. Even a nice bath in the bath tub with a view over the property was fun. The upstairs area was occupied by the kids as their magic tree house. We even got some snow a couple of minutes drive away and the owner provided us with two sleds so the kids dream became true ;-) the areal is very nice, quiet and it feels like you are in the middle of no where...but just a couple of minutes away is Bennington with everything you need. The communication with Lars was very very good and uncomplicated. Everything we need was there. In the barn itself we loved the detailed and storytelling decoration. We loved it there! I would love to give more stars then just five...If you are a ski lover this will be the perfect place bc you can reach about 4 mountain resorts within less than an hour drive. But if you wanna go tubing make sure you will be there on a weekend since most of the areas offer this only on the weekends. Or maybe it was bc of the weather condition...I can imagine that this place will be nice in summer or fall as well so we are planning on coming back soon. Thank you very much Lars for everything! You have a great house there! ;-)
