Overview

About the property

Historic Tarrytown Cottage with Panoramic Views of Lake Austin:

This romantic historic three-story Tarrytown cottage, built as a weekend retreat in 1906, boasts a limestone stone structure adorned with hand-hewn beams and rare old-growth-long-leaf-pine-wood accented with cedar timber. Once a B&B the 'Studio' quickly became a favored honey-moon retreat and was voted 'Austin's most Romantic Retreat'. With many movies were being produced in the Austin area and some of the guests stayed for extended periods for example, Ryan Gosling while filming a movie about the the Austin music scene, producer Linda Obst while filming 'Hope Floats' , Luke Wilson while filming 'The Wendell Baker Story', and Peter Berg while writing the screen play for 'Friday Night Lights'.

The studio welcomes you from the courtyard with large double cedar doors accented with iron hinges and an adjacent Della Robbia ceramic inset in exterior wall. Skylights adorn the airy Saltillo tiled kitchen and an oversized Jacuzzi bath, while stone staircase leads to bedroom. A private balcony with stone railing engulfs the canopy of large oak trees in the courtyard, framing stunning views of Lake Austin. The large stone courtyard is outfitted with a fire place and grill that set the stage for relaxing nights outside and easy entertaining. The courtyard and back lawn are shaded by a canopy of live oaks while the perimeter of the property is surrounded by stone fencing that exude the comfort and seclusion of unique old world living. Very romantic!

***Also located on the property is a larger residence suitable for up to 5 guests which is Homeaway property #3691456 if you are trying to group guests together using both homes or possibly looking for a larger property.

History:

The property's grand limestone exterior exemplifies old Austin stone architecture. When the rubble filled dam broke on Lake Austin around 1900 the shores were lined with large chunks of limestone. Subsequently many of the houses on the eastern side of Lake Austin were constructed with limestone from the lake shores.

The home and its out-outbuildings were built in1906 by Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at the University of Texas was named. He was a Texas Supreme Court Justice famous for creating the Texas Railroad Commission. She was an artist and the first director of the University of Texas Art Department. The building known as the 'Studio' was built as a weekend retreat for the Judge and his wife. Her paintings of flowers can still be seen on the original hand-hewn beams on the lower floor of the 'Studio'.

About Corinne

We first stayed at the house as renters via Homeaway two and a half years ago. We loved the property so much that we purchased the home in December and are carrying on the rental legacy. We hope that you will enjoy the house's heartwarming soul as much as we have!

Cozy, tranquil, beautiful, and a great location!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were lucky enough to be able to host our intimate wedding at this unique and gorgeous estate! Corinne and Henry were extremey gracious to us and to our family, and made us feel very at home. There was definitely an ease of communication, Corinne always responded in a swift manner regarding any questions we had. We were glad we were able to have both the main house and the cottage for our wedding weekend, it was very needed! It was a wonderful experience to be able to share with our family and to be able to have the separateness of the cottage. We loved the location of the home, it was dreamy, beautiful, and the perfect place for us to have our dream wedding! We continue to get compliments from our wedding photos and everyone wanting to know where we got married, it truly is a gem located in the beautiful Austin hill country!

Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5

This place is absolutely beautiful and very unique! We booked the main house and courtyard for a small party and all of the guests took immediate interest in touring the property they were all so impressed and it was a great backdrop to an amazing weekend. We didnt stay in the cottage but I did get a tour and it's very charming and romantic! Corrine, the host, is absolutely wonderful. She was very accomidating and was quick to respond to all questions. I would HIGHLY advise anyone to consider staying here. You won't be disappointed.
