Located on a small hill within the village, overlooking a stream in the front, and a brook and view behind the house, this 1830 cape, completely refurbished, has 4 bedrooms (1 downstairs bedroom with bath and 2 upstairs bedrooms, plus a sleeping loft overlooking the living room), accommodating 6, plus 1-2 children in the sleeping loft which is accessible only through one of the bedrooms. The attached barn is completely finished as a living room, opening onto a very private deck that overlooks a brook and a waterfall in the village, and distant hills beyond. The deck is great for evening meals outdoors in warmer weather, cooked on the small gas grill, or just relaxing and reading a book.

There is so much to do from this house without having to drive. In early October there is the Weston Antiques Show, and the following weekend, the Weston Craft Show. In December there is a Christmas Bazaar Nov. 28-29 at the Playhouse and 'Christmas in Weston' on Dec. 6 with sleigh rides that will delight children.

In late June to Early September there is exceptional theater 5 nights a week at the Weston Playhouse, and post-theater entertainment at the Playhouse Cabaret on select evenings. There are concerts at the Church on the Hill 6 times during the summer on Sundays at 4 pm, conveniently located nearby. And there is excellent dining at the Inn at Weston and Bryant House, all within walking distance.

There are fascinating lectures on the first Wednesday of each month, in nearby Manchester and Rutland (35 min), or in funky Brattleboro (45 min) where there are some great restaurants (Korean, Thai, organic and regular fare.

About Andy and Jean

We live about 1/3 mile away on the edge of the Village of Weston.

Andy and Jean purchased this house in 2007

Why Andy and Jean chose Ludlow / Okemo Mountain Area

My sister and her husband used to own the Inn at Weston at one time so we've spent many years in the village. Weston is one of the prettiest villages in Vermont, with a lovely town green ringed by many historic houses, and the Weston Playhouse, all within walking distance. We like being surrounded by a brook behind the house, a stream across the road, and a river/waterfall that can be seen and heard from the deck.

What makes this house unique

The sound of water . . . and the short walk to the playhouse, the Vermont Country Store, the art gallery, dining at the Bryant house and the Inn at Weston.

There are lovely gardens in front and alongside the house. There is complete privacy on the deck overlooking the brook.

The key attractions are the well-known Weston Playhouse which offers theater and musicals from late June to early September.

Also, the Weston Priory, which holds services year round, is well known for their singing monks.

Kinhaven holds concerts featuring faculty on Friday evening and talented performing students on Saturday evening. Free and inspiring!

The Vermont Country Store, one of Vermont's most intriguing retail stores, has a large store with 3 minutes walk from the house. It is attractively located in older homes that have been interconnected and feature their unusual items including food, clothing, gifts, kitchen items, and many items you may not have seen for 50 years!

Bryant House, next to the Vermont Country Store, offers lunch and dinner on select days. Mildred's is a quaint snack bar operated in summer, and is also operated by the Vermont Country Store.

The Village Market has a deli counter offering breakfast and lunch items as well as a variety of grocery items, plus gas.

Very nice Vermont Farm house

  • 4 of 5

Overall was very nice and comfortable. Downstairs bathroom needs a few upgrades ie, towel hooks, real and larger mirror and a table to place toiletries etc. other than that it was a very nice and comfortable home. Would stay there again.

Beautiful Peaceful Place

  • 5 of 5

We spent the month of July and really enjoyed this incredible, well-situated home. The house is beautifully renovated, but maintains its character that comes with almost 200 years of history. The sounds of running streams abound at both ends of the house. We especially enjoyed sleeping with the windows open to the sound of falling water. It was great to be able to walk to the Weston Playhouse, and along any of the neighboring back roads. Living space at both the front and back of the house made it easy to spread out when we had guests. The large mudroom at the side entry provided a great place to store our dirty boots and outdoor gear/bicycles. The kitchen is well stocked with plates, pots, utensils, etc., and appliances. The rear deck is a relaxing place to sit by the trees and stream below. The owners are very friendly, helpful, and easy to deal with. We highly recommend this house.

Perfect home base for exploring the Green Mountains

  • 5 of 5

My family and some friends (7 of us) spent a wonderful week exploring the Green Mountains and Southern Vermont with Andy and Jean's beautiful house as the perfect home base. We did Arlington, Bennington, Brattleboro, Emerald Lake, Hildene, Manchester, Quechee, and Woodstock with stops at Londonderry and Bromley. From Weston, all these locations are about half an hour to an hour drive away. Lest you may think that's a lot of time on the road (OK I believe Andy thought it was kind of excessive... ;) ), we're not talking driving the I-95 corridor. These are bucolic uncluttered roads that are stunningly scenic. Even if you weren't going to a particular location, you'd be wanting to drive these lazy roads to enjoy them anyway. "Getting there is half the fun."

We were inspired to go to Vermont actually after watching a Korean travel show while visiting my mom who gets Korean TV channels via satellite. The show described Vermont as one of the most beautiful places in the world. We live in MA and have been traveling to Norway, Argentina, etc. to see nature but have always been aware that there's Vermont right there in our backyard that's more than just a skiing place. Now that we've explored it, we know it ranks right up there as one of the top travel destinations in the world.

Andy was spot-on with his recommendations. We'd never have tried The Garden Café in Londonderry if it weren't for Andy. And it was awesome! With Weston as the home base, we went to The Vermont Country Store right in town almost every day. The store is HUGE, and it's super fun to explore. If you're hungry, you can just fill up on the food samples there!! (OK I'm exaggerating, but well you get the point.....)

I'd say the only (quite minor) area of improvement for the house is that its wifi is kind of spotty. Being a geek, I happened to bring a 50 ft Ethernet cable with me and tested the router. The cable plant to the house is pretty solid, so the problem is with the router broadcast (it's a Comcast unit after all... :) ) which we had to reset a number of times. I surmise that Andy can easily mitigate this problem by asking Comcast to send a newer unit, and this issue should've been resolved by the time you read this review. And you may also ask if you're in Andy and Jean's house, what am I doing logging onto the internet anyway? Crack open a print book and read.......Oh and don't forget to squeegee off the seat in the upstairs (magnificent) shower.......

Owner's Response: Thank you Paul for your comment on our Comcast modem, given your IT expertise. That was most helpful. I immediately called Comcast and picked up a new modem and installed it today. It gives good high speed service throughout the house and is a big improvement Having good internet access is really important, especially for those that need to work while on vacation in Vermont. This was an urgent 'fix', and was completed the day after you alerted me. Thanks again!

Perfect house and friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough great things about this house. It's a vintage farmhouse right in the downtown area of Weston, across the street from a lovely stream (you can hear it from the house). The hosts have done a fantastic job renovating it, and it is both sophisticated and cozy inside. It was immaculate when we arrived, and it was so easy to settle right in quickly. It was also perfect for our dog. Like many antique houses, there is a door that closes between all the rooms, including the living room and kitchen, so it was easy to keep him contained, and the living room leads to a fenced-in deck area. Also, there is a very large entry room which is a spacious, comfortable spot to leave your dog for a couple of hours if necessary. Weston is a charming town, very quiet and serene, and a great home base. Our host Andy was super friendly and very responsive to all questions. Our stay couldn't have been better. We'll be back for sure.
