Calabash Cove House Rental Photos and Description

4 bed, 4.5 bath, Sleeps 8

Manderley is an exclusive, romantic and private vacation hideaway on the beautiful island of St Lucia. The winning combination of Mario Spinelli’s architectural design, idyllic location and the owner’s experience of living in the Caribbean created Manderley

The architecture achieves that rare attribute of making a place that is relaxing and comfortable in sophisticated surroundings.

Set in two acres of tropical garden, along with its scenic panoramic views across St Lucia and both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, Manderley provides a different class of luxury creating a tranquil and unique vacation experience.

Manderley is available to rent throughout the year.

THE GREAT ROOM: This room encompasses the entire floor of the main part of the house. A single solid piece of Guyanese timber supports the roof. The three sets of double louvre doors with jalousie shutters provide access to the balcony and are left open all day allowing the breeze and the light to be filtered and diffused by the fretwork. This is the living room – literally. Living life to the full either by dining with friends in the candlelight, curling up with a book in one of the Planter’s chairs or listening to music – the parquet floor seems made for dancing barefoot. The stained glass windows depict scenes of St. Lucia and cast a rainbow of colours across the floor when the sun catches them.

DINING: Manderley’s traditional Caribbean mahogany dining table seats up to 18. When the table is set with the old silver and the blue and white Spode china it is an experience to savour. A local chef can be provided as and when required to suit clients’ needs. Above the table is one of the three magnificent chandeliers, which provide such a distinctive feature to the principal living room.

LIBRARY: Manderley has a fully refurbished Library, designed by Crowthers of Syon in England. The Library has been transformed by the installation of widescreen television and home theatre surround sound which is ideal for relaxing after a day in the sun and the water. The Library also boasts a superb collection of films, which cater for every conceivable taste. Air conditioning, while rarely needed in the cool that is a Caribbean night up in Cap Estate, is available in the Library, just in case.

BEDROOMS: Manderley has three ensuite double bedrooms all with four poster beds. There is a fourth bedroom with twin single beds and en-suite shower suitable for children age 13 and over. The legendary tower suite features a wonderful bathroom in which one can lie in the bath and see the Atlantic Ocean from one window and the Caribbean Sea from the other. The Garden Rooms are situated overlooking the pool and have separate dressing rooms.

GARDEN: Manderley sits in two acres of tropical gardens with a stunning view that extends as far as the Pitons to the south. The bougainvillea , jasmine and mauve petrea vine growing up to the balcony make a fantastic show against the gingerbread fretwork of the villa.

THE POOL: The pool is set at the centre of the villa surrounded by lush tropical plants. There is also a shaded plunge pool and deck area for sunbathing. It is very private yet commands a lovely view to the Caribbean Sea beyond.

About Marie Cockrell

I arrived in the island from New York in the late 60's and then fell in love with the owner of the hotel I stayed in.We married and had three children so you could say my fate was sealed! I became involved in the development of the hotel. My husband , a Swiss trained hotelier , ran the family hotel and since I had gone to art school and worked as a designer, soon found myself helping in all aspects of the hotel - designing the interiors, taking photos, writing brochures and learning all the finer points of hotel keeping. WE took a break from St. Lucia in 1972 when we ran the Spice Island Inn in Grenada for about 4 years. Our first son was born in 1975 and then we came back to St. Lucia in 1976.After that the hotel became the first all inclusive hotel in the Eastern Caibbean and despite the misgivings of certain Tour operators, was hugely successful. Outof the proceeds of that hotel we were able to buy an existing hotel and The Body Holiday, Le Sport Hotel was created. Our other two sons were born in 1977 and 1982 and it was in 1988 that Le Sport was opened. Now it is my eldest son Andrew, also a graduate of L'Ecole Hoteliere at Lausanne University like his father, who is now Deputy Managing Director. I had started a business of hotel shops, begining with a small hut made of Bamboo on the beach at Malabar (the original name of Rendezvous) My business grew until I had shops in a number of hotels in the island and Grenada and also a small factory making hotel uniforms, corporate identity uniforms , and resort wear for my own shops. Nowadays I have cut back considerably and now just have shops at Rendezvous,Le Sport and Sugar Beach. I now divide my time between St.Lucia in the winter and summer in my apartment in Primrose Hill in London and in between, travel to attend shows where I buy the stock for my boutiques.

Marie Cockrell purchased this house in 1985

Why Marie Cockrell chose St Lucia

Manderley is special. Not only because I was there when the idea for the house was conceived , but because it has fallen to me to look after it for generations to come. It is a peaceful place and gives the occupant s a chance to wind down and to live at a gentle pace. I have deliberately furnished it with antiques and things from a distant era, family memorabilia and collections of all sorts, from the blue and white Spode dinner service to the Chinese vases, to the old lace on the side tables, most of it made hundreds of years ago by my family in England. Located on a hill the breeze cools the house and the fretwork - called

'gingerbread' locally, -diffuses the light and gives the house a peaceful countenance.

A Holiday is meant to give one a break from the usual routine of life, to recharge the batteries, to experience something different. Staying at Manderley one can find that difference. The pace can slow, there is time just to do nothing , read a book. laze by the pool , watch the hummingbirds play in the purple vines. But it is not so far from the world out there, just down the hill to spend a day at the beach, go to the Oasis Spa at the Body Holiday, dine out in any number of restaurants, play golf or tennis, shop in the market for fresh fruit and vegetables...just hike around the area, potter in the garden. I have recently started to make a vegetable garden to provide salad and herbs for the house and David the gardener is going to be able to provide our guests with all sorts of produce - we hope!!Pearl the housekeeper is a wonderful host and she is there to make sure all the creature comforts are taken care of and is a mine of information about the island.

What makes this house unique

Manderley has a uniqe atmosphere in that it is a haven to relax in. I know of some guests that have never left the house except to go shopping for food, until the day they left the island. Another guest, a well known CEO of a huge company, rented thehouse twice in successive years and upon arival said he didn't want the staff there except to come in to change the sheets and do the laundry - he told me he never got to do any 'normal ' things, like cook and wash up. go to buy food.in the market.......his life was too busy to do that sort of thing back in London - his holiday was to do these sorts of things with his family. And imagine mysurprise when I opened an Hello magazine one day and saw a picture of Lisa Kudrow - Phoebe of 'Friends' on television - standing on the front porch of Manderley. She was staying in the house with some friends and Hello had followed her to do a story on her vacation. I must say the house looked lovely!!! She talked about how lovely it was to stay in such a place and get away from it all. There is no glitz or glamour at Manderley - just peace and quiet in a laid back yet sophisticated way. When I had a BIG birthday in the December of last year. I invited people to come to a black tie ball at Manderley. We rolled back the carpet, put a band in the anteroom off the Big Room, had a wonderful buffet on the big table, and danced and celebrated life until the early hours. About 140 people had a great party! But, equally, in another guise, the house is as friendly with just two people enjoying the quiet. I think of Manderley as being all things to all different kinds of people and situations.
