Situated at the base of Mt. Philo State Park in Vermont with stunning panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains, the Mt. Philo Inn offers guests the privacy, spaciousness and tranquility of a home in the country, with the amenities of a boutique hotel.
The boutique inn features four spacious suites-- three 3-bedroom and one 2-bedroom —located in separate wings of the building. Each “wing” has a complete kitchen, 2 bathrooms and private entrance way. The décor is a mix of old and new: farmhouse tables, modern office equipment, velvet reading chairs, and local artwork. Kitchens are fully equipped for cooking and entertaining. Refrigerators are stocked with a breakfast basket of Vermont products. Bedrooms are outfitted with luxurious Anichini sheets.
The century-old inn is in Charlotte, the heart of the Champlain Valley, adjacent to Mt. Philo State Park, surrounded by fields and mountains, but conveniently located with easy access to the restaurants, cafes, galleries, bookstores and shops of Burlington and Middlebury.
A recent three-year restoration has transformed the property into a unique lodging that is conducive to educational retreats, family reunions or simple weekends away. A commune in the sixties, the inn most recently functioned as long-term apartment rentals but is now available to travelers looking to stay two nights or longer.
Innkeepers David and Jane Garbose have given thought to the inn’s facelift-- preserving the inn’s gorgeous woodwork; sourcing local building materials when possible; decorating with a minimalist and eclectic style; and emphasizing products from local companies. The result is an updated classic that exudes a simple elegance and peaceful vibe.
David Garbose never dreamed of being an innkeeper. The Charlotte man had a career as a speech therapist and ran a business promoting speech recognition software but when he and his then-fiancée Jane were looking for a place to get married they checked out the Mt. Philo Inn and fell in love with it. “When it came up for sale soon after the wedding,” said Garbose, “we jumped at the chance to buy it. We weren’t in the market for an inn but this was a place where we wanted to live.”
After purchasing the inn in 1990, the Garboses renovated the 1896 facility. Initially they catered to long term rentals; people who stayed for as long as six years. Garbose said many Charlotte residents have lived at the inn, eventually deciding to purchase their own homes in town. During the filming of the 2000 movie “What Lies Beneath,” there was a need for short-term rentals so the couple purchased furniture to create furnished suites. Their business now caters to those who want to stay for a few nights or a few weeks
