About the property

Beautiful Berlin Altbau In Most Loved Kollwitzkiez

This is a real jewel in the heart of Berlin - a beautiful 40sqm one bedroom apartment in an old Berlin building in the 'belle etage' first floor with its amazing high ceilings. The apartment looks out onto Sredski street which is next door to the famous Kulturbrauerei. At the end of the street are the very popular and well known Anna Blume and Sowohl als auch cafes.

The apartment itself is tastefully and eclectically decorated with original furnishings from different periods throughout. It has one bedroom and a separate bedroom as well as a fully equipped kitchen and living area. Its real wooden floors and large windows make it beautiful bright and warm space to live in.

With all that the area has to offer it is unlikely that you will want to spend much time inside but the apartment has been especially equipped to make you comfortable if you so choose. It has a flat screen TV, DVD player, speaker for iPod or iPhone as well as lots of interesting books and magazines.

The location is a two minute walk from the famous Kollwitz Platz with its twice weekly food markets and its now famous street cafe culture. This in addition to the growing number of small specialist clothing, jewellery and craft shops makes this one of the most prized locations in the city to stay.

The apartment is a four minute walk from the U2 underground line which is the perfect transport link for visitors to the city. It will connect you to Alexander Platz in the east, Potsdamer Platz in the Reichstag and Brandenburg quarter, as well as to the world renowned Zoo and Acquarium in the west of the city. Direct on the line is also the KaDeWe a Europe-famous department store for those wanting the designer experience. From Alexander Platz you can connect to almost every part of the city via the unrivalled public transport network of Berlin.

On arrival you will be provided with lots of information about the immediate vicinity as well as interesting things about the city in general. Depending on the day you may even be lucky enough to get some home made cake!!

This is a very special apartment in a very special area and you will have an unforgettable stay.

About John O' Connell

I am living here in Berlin with my wife Camilla and our two sons Edward and John Jack. My hobbies are cookery and gardening. As a result we have lots of cookery books and plants in the apartment. I also like to travel, and when I visit a new country the food and plants are a major interest for me. I also like to garden and cook with my children and I like to be able to use the produce from our klein Garten here in Berlin in my cooking. We have eaten in a lot of the local restaurants and I would love to tell you about some of our favorite places. I will have usually baked a cake to make my guests welcome and it is March as I write this and I have just made there batches of Seville orange marmalade, which my guests are currently enjoying.

Why John O' Connell chose Prenzlauer Berg

Beautiful street and neighbourhood

Lots of great local cafes, restauants and shops

Lovely quiet building

Nice light

Wooden floors

A lively convenient location in Berlin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week in this nicely appointed flat in what was the former East Berlin and found it more than met our needs. The place was very clean and roomy, and quiet even though there are numerous restaurants and shops just out the front door. Both the tram and subway (U-Bahn) were just minutes away with great links to the rest of the city. A large grocery store was nearby and stocked everything we needed for our breakfasts and even a couple of suppers. There was also an organic food market a few blocks away. The WiFi worked perfectly.

John was a great host. He provided detailed information before we arrived on how to get to the flat from the main train station and what we could expect weather wise. And when he met us at the flat with a walnut cake, he had lots more information on restaurants, public transit and sights to see. He also gave us some freshly ground coffee and a variety of teas. There are many Berlin travel guides (both English and German) in the flat that cover almost any thing a visitor may want to see or experience. John helped us with our luggage (the flat is one floor up) both when we arrived and left. He even dropped off some laundry detergent after we said we needed to do some washing. He made sure we could contact him if we needed to and sent us an e-mail to see how we were doing and to arrange the return of keys and the damage deposit.

We tried a number of his restaurant recommendations and really enjoyed ourselves. The Greek restaurant he suggested had great food and, the evening we went there, even a Christening party with Greek music and dancing.

We would recommend John's flat to anyone who is planning a stay in Berlin and wants the freedom of their own place in a very interesting area of Berlin.

Thanks John.

PS - I would like to get your mother's fruitcake recipe if she is prepared to share it!

Wonderful Place To Stay in Berlin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from spending 10 days in Berlin at this apartment.

First of all, the location is wonderful. It’s in the former East Berlin, and the immediate area is full of wonderful cafes, restaurants and small shops. We could have spent our entire ten days just exploring the local neighborhood. We particularly liked the fact that the neighborhood seemed full of families, people who actually live there, rather than tourists. That was a big plus for us.

The apartment itself is very comfortable and has a well-equipped kitchen. Everything was clean. It was just the right size for the two of us. From the minute we walked into the apartment, we just knew that we were going to have a great stay.

The local tram and subway stops are about 4 minutes from the apartment, which gave us a chance to walk off some of the delicious baked goods we found in the local bakeries. The public transportation system in Berlin is quite good, with a combination of subways, trains and street trams that took us everywhere we wanted to go in the city. We spent much of our time going to museums and theater, and had no problems getting to any of those places from the apartment.

We found that the Deutsche Bahn website was particularly helpful in navigating the public transportation system in Berlin. You type in the location you want to go to, and it gives you train numbers and directions to get there from your current location.

When we arrived at the apartment we were met by the owner, John O’Connell. He immediately made us feel welcome. He’d baked a whiskey cake for us, and had an assortment of teas and some coffee for us as well. Nice touches after a day traveling by train from Prague.

Our stay in Berlin was the third stop on our trip, all apartments through VRBO. We’ve generally had good luck with the accommodations we book through VRBO, but we never know until we arrive whether the owner is going to be helpful and available. Sometimes we’ve had to fend for ourselves a bit more than we would have liked. Not so with John. He had lots of good information about the neighborhood, helped us get oriented to the local transportation system, and steered us to a great restaurant for our first meal in Berlin. He made it his business to be available and helpful when needed, and was just the perfect host for our stay in Berlin.

In all, we had a wonderful time at John’s apartment, hope to stay there again, and give it our highest recommendation.

Wundervolle Woche

  • 4 of 5
