Overview

Silverthorne Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

This 35-acre property includes a grand log chalet situated at 8900 feet above sea level.

The top floor, one large room with a vaulted ceiling, boasts picture windows facing the Gore Range. The wood burning stove generously heats this level. A propane furnace provides additional heat for the whole house. The living room area has several couches (one of which is a sofa-sleeper) and a sky chair. The dining table seats 10 people. The kitchen is large and well equipped with counter space for preparing sizable meals. There is also a half-bathroom on this floor.

On the middle level there are four bedrooms, which sleep 8 (2 queens, 1 double and a bunk bed). There is a full bathroom with shower/bathtub on this floor.

This is a kid friendly property equipped with toys, books, movies, entertainment system with satellite radio and a ping-pong table.

A large solar system provides most of the heat and hot water for a reduced carbon footprint. There is propane and electricity for the utilities. Laundry facilities are available on the bottom level if needed.

The deck wraps around 2/3 of the upper level for sunbathing, bird watching, sunrise and sunset viewing. There is a propane grill on the deck for convenient outdoor cooking. In addition, you can enjoy meals on the deck at a wooden picnic table. Just below the house is a fire ring and additional picnic table for cookouts.

From the hammock on the deck you can view the Gore Range, Green Mountain Reservoir, and the Williams Fork Range. Deer, elk, and fox are common visitors. Nightfall brings stargazing and the occasional coyote chorus. Songbirds, hummingbirds, eagles, and hawks are often seen.

In winter, the chalet's location is ideal for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and excellent sledding. Alpine skiing and snowboarding are available at Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone and A-Basin, all within an hour. Vail, Steamboat Springs, and Winter Park are each about 2 hours away. There is Gold Medal fishing on the Colorado and Blue Rivers, and belly-boating on Cataract Lake. The chalet is surrounded by aspens, so the fall is an exceptional time to visit. There is access to various wilderness areas for sportsmen looking for a comfortable base.

Lower Cataract Lake is a short drive away during the summer months. When there is snow, it can be reached with snowshoes or cross-country skis via the road. A number of trail-heads begin in that area for day hikes or camping. The wild flowers are spectacular in spring and summer and the aspen foliage is golden in the fall. The cataract itself is also worth exploring.

The location is solitary, serene and private on 35 acres of woodland and sage brush meadows with wildlife as your nearest neighbors.

Well behaved pets are welcome.

Please don't smoke inside.

This is a perfect property for a small family get-together or a place to return to after a day of hiking, fishing or hunting.

Winter access can be more difficult even with with snow plowing, so contact us directly for more information.

Rates vary seasonally, so please contact us through the VRBO site for specifics about your stay

About Jason Gilman

We designed and built this chalet, using standing dead lodge pole logs. Our 4 children grew up using this place many times a year, summer and winter. We are now retired, and the children are married and living scattered around the country. We come here about twice a month, bringing our dog and 2 cats with us.

Jason Gilman purchased this cabin in 1980

Why Jason Gilman chose Summit County Colorado

We built the chalet as our vacation retreat, and now would like to share it with others.

What makes this cabin unique

Solitude, serenity, love of the mountains, and enjoyment of the wildlife.

Majestic!

The House was very clean and equipped with everything you might need during your stay. Family/kid friendly. The view was incredible!!! The fact that there is no cell sevice is a blessing. It allows you to truly "get away" and spend quality time with your family, and enjoy God's creations. We are so thankful we were able stay here as our family's first annual vacation. We HIGHLY recommend staying here!! -Greg & Monica

Beautiful area, nice cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Heeney cabin in early June. Four adults and two kids were very well accommodated, though please note that there is no longer a twin/trundle in the fourth bedroom. It has been replaced by twin bunk beds. This would have been a problem for us if the other 2 adults we had planned for would have been able to come on the trip, but since they had to cancel it all worked out well. The hike around Lower Cataract was spectacular, and took us about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. Driving into town was a bit further than expected (the dirt road part), but the rented minivan handled it just fine. We enjoyed watching the antics of the hummingbirds, listening to the coyote pack at night, and seeing deer every morning on the property. The campfire was fun, though the 5 gallon buckets of water were not at the site as stated in the paperwork. Also, bring your own marshmallow roasters! The kitchen was well-appointed and had everything we needed.

As for the local area, the tour of historic buildings in Frisco was a fun way to spend a couple of hours, and the kids enjoyed the passports they got to stamp in every building. Bike rental in Frisco also worked out well, and the trail up to Copper Mountain is fantastic, though not for small kids or casual riders. Copper Mountain also has a deal in the summer months for $49 where you can ride the lift up and down the mountain as many times in a day as you like (we got to witness a wedding at the top), ride the zip line across the lake (kind of small, but fun), jump on the trampoline-with-bungees thing, and play miniature golf. You can also pay for each individually, but it's much better as a package deal. Fishing on Lower Cataract Lake only yielded 1 fish, but it was a beauty. All in all, it was a very enjoyable stay.

We had a great weekend getaway with four toddlers and four adults - hiking, sledding, and snowshoeing. Will definitely be returning as it was such a fun and relaxing weekend for all!

It is an impressive view that meets the eye at dawn the first morning. Having unspoiled views 270 degrees, from the livingroom, is second to non. With the deck wrapping around the house, you can move with the sun, to soak up the scenery and the warming rays.

The house is perfect if you want to stay of the beating track, away from the hustle of the ski towns. You really get a feeling, that you'r alone. in you private winter paridise.

Interior decorration is very homely and inviting. Well heated and very light. Everything worked perfectly and we where spoiled for choice, of things to do.

we where there for skiing the summit county area. And didn't mind the 40-60 mins. drive to and from the resorts. Cause it simply feels better coming home to a house that has no naboures. A special feeling that I invite everyone to try.

Jason was in every way helpfull, and made our stay very enjoyable. He responded to any question before and during our stay very quickly.

All in all an overall perfect stay and experience in one of the most tranquil and beautiful locations in Colorado.

Thank you so much Jason. It has truly been great staying in you'r family home.

Lasse.

Beautiful Private Chalet

Thoroughly enjoyed the Chalet. It was everything it was billed as. Directions and instructions very clear and easy to follow. I would recommend to any group up to 8 people any time of year. Loved the snow and the views. I would stay here again.

Great getaway

The chalet was beautiful and very clean. We enjoyed our time here with playing horse shoes and hiking, as well as enjoying the clear sky and the may stars which seemed so close. We will plan on staying here again.
