About Marcy and Ken

Recently retired and now living permanently in the Black Hills.

Marcy and Ken purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Marcy and Ken chose Black Hills

In 2005 my husband and I were looking for a place in the Black Hills for when we were able to retire that was centrally located to all that the Hills have to offer. We built this cabin and used it for our many vacations to the Black Hills. Being adjacent to the national forest we have enjoyed many beautiful hikes and abundant wildlife just outside our door way. Since we recently completed the building of our permanent home we are now able to share this piece of heaven with others.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From our guest book:

The cabin was a bonus on our stay! You guys thought of everything a person needed. Really enjoyed the morning view with coffee. Seeing the wildlife was relaxing. The cabin was cozy, our family was very relaxed when we walked in! The board games were a plus. A very peaceful and enjoyable stay. We will come back again and recommend anyone to stay. The weekend was just not enough time. Thanks you guys

Would not recommend this to anyone.

My wife and I have been vacationing in many different states and always used VRBO. This residence was o.k. But for the money we paid it was not worth the money. We have stayed at many different cabins and paid a lot less and always got more for the cost. This rental did not have a stove. It did not have central air. It did not have a clothes dryer. The television reception was terrible. When there was reception it was constantly going digital. There were only three channels that came in from time to time. For the price of the rental fee the owner should have cable or satellite. Better bring plenty of dvd's with you.

Owner's Response: So sorry your stay did not meet your expectations. There are a variety of rentals here in the Black Hills with many different amenities. When I rent VRBO's I read what amenities are available so that I make sure it includes those that I have to have. Nowhere in our listing does it say we have air conditioning. We recommend that travelers open the windows overnight to let the 50-60 temps cool the cabin overnight than close the windows in the during the day. Those that follow this find the cabin remains cool. Under amenities it says we have a microwave, hot plate and a toaster oven. It does not say or show in the photo's that we have a stove. This meets the needs of most of our guest's. Also under amenities it says we have a washer and a drying rack. We don't advertise that we have a dryer. As advertised we only have an antenna. We receive the following when reception is the best: 6 PBS stations, ABC, FOX, and 2 old movie and tv stations. Some days only half of them come in so we provide an assortment of dvd's and vcr tapes. Most want to enjoy spending their time outside in the Black Hills and don't watch much TV. Price wise we are very competitive to cabins that are similar to ours, we are located in a tourist area with a 5 month season so it will not be as cheap as nontourist areas.

Great place to stay when visiting the Black Hills!

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed twice at this rental. It is clean, well stocked with everything you need, and very peaceful. It is close to Custer State Park and Mt Rushmore. We come to SD Black Hills to ride our motorcycle. This cabin is a great location for proximity to some of the best riding out there.

If I had to give some cons, they would be as follows: TV reception is very spotty and really only has one major network (abc). There is no dryer (they only list washer on VRBO-which I didn't notice). We like being able to complete our laundry before returning home so this might have been a deal breaker had I noticed there was no dryer. There was a clothesline but the weather wasn't conducive for hanging clothes out. Lastly, the main bed top mattress probably needs to be replaced. It is sinking down in the middle. These things could be minor to others so hopefully they won't deter anyone from renting.

We would definitely recommend this cabin to friends and family. The owners are very nice and give you complete privacy. It was a wonderful trip and we want to thank the owners for providing a lovely home away from home.

Owner's Response: So great to have you stay with us again. Will look to replace the mattress, had not received comments from other guest's about it so did not realize the 3 year old mattress was due for a replacement. We do only have an antenna so only receive the following when reception is the best: 6 PBS statiolns, ABC, FOX, and 2 old movie and tv stations. Some days only half of them come in so we provide an assortment of dvd's and vcr tapes. We look forward to having spend time at our cabin again when you return to the Black Hills!

Our second time staying here. First time was two years ago. A great location for the activities we like to do in the area. Always clean and comfortable. Owner live next door and respond quickly to any concerns. This has become our go to place for any future travel plans to the Black Hills and Badlands.

The PERFECT Home Away from Home...

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this Cabin and of course it was perfect. The cabin is cozy, spotless, located in just a perfect spot and the owners are AMAZING! They make sure your needs are met and they go above and beyond to make your stay so enjoyable. The only problem with this cabin is that we don't own it...LOL...Thank you Ken and Marcy for an incredible vacation spot.
