A few minor glitches, but we loved it!

  • 4 of 5

We would definitely stay here again. The neighborhood and proximity to stores, subway, cafes, restaurants, parks, and the sights and historical landmarks of Harlem could not have been better. The apartment is spacious and comfortable for 2. A couple more people likely fine; may be crowded for more than 4. It was a bit dirty when we arrived; we had to sweep up and also wipe down a couple cupboard and fridge shelves, and dresser drawers -- just dust/hair & food crumbs. We told Joy who was upset to hear it and very apologetic. She'd hired someone who had clearly not done a great job. The bathroom was clean (except for floor, as mentioned), and so were the linens.

Slightly worn furniture was fine (it's not fancy, so stay elsewhere if you prefer pristine decor). Somewhat rusting towel rack could use replacing, and no hooks in the bathroom, but workable.

Turned off AC at night and put the big fan in the bedroom; it made perfect white noise, so it was quiet for sleep. There was back alley construction in the morning when we were there, it woke us just one time. Some occasional street noise which was not audible with the fan. No worse than where we live :]

Spacious shower, comfy bed, beautiful hardwood floors, everything you need in the kitchen, and a great table & chairs in dining area.

We loved: Studio Museum, Marcus Garvey Park, Lenox Coffee Roasters & Manhattanville (cafes), The Edge, Harlem Tavern, and Amy Ruth's (restaurants), and the flawless food truck on 145th St & Frederick Douglass Blvd. Extra special: The High Bridge at 172nd St., the oldest bridge in NYC, closed for 40 years until 2015. Check the city parks website (google "High Bridge NYC") for other nearby historical sites.

Joy was available and responded promptly to all our correspondence prior to and during our visit. She is terrific, and the neighborhood is gorgeous w/beautiful trees and homes. We've been to NYC many times but it had been a few years and we are glad to have found this apt.

[Absolute Bagels on Broadway and 108th is our forever favorite. Local cafes had some pretty good bagels too :] Thank you again, Joy!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed my stay at this Harlem apartment. It was everything I hoped for: homey, peaceful, comfortable, clean, safe. The sheets and towels were luxurious, the living room and bedroom spacious, the neighborhood so pretty. Joy was very responsive. I was visiting my daughter, who lives in Harlem, and we went all over NYC from the apartment with ease. We were able to try one of the restaurants nearby that Joy recommended--Ponty Bistro--and loved it. I would be so happy to stay at this sanctuary again!

My teenaged son and I spent a week at Strivers Row Sanctuary and enjoyed our stay. The apt. is clean, spacious and comfortable and Joy was easy and efficient in communication. The location is convenient to multiple subway lines and shopping and we would be happy to visit again.
