About The Owner

I retired from the Government then opened a Victorian Bed & Breakfast that I ran for 20 years. I then decided I needed something on one floor so I bought a chicken house & converted it into an Italian Villa, that took about 5 years to finish. I like working in the yard & garden so that was the next project that I went after.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2012

Why The Owner chose Rileyville

I then decided I liked to have people around so I had a cottage built on the other piece of property I have. I wanted to be able to have the people get in touch with me if they needed something, but not too close to bother them. Then the patio went in so they would be able to have a fire & a charcoal grill, people like to get back to charcoal once in a while even though they have gas grills at home. The fire pit lets them toast marshmallows & make s'mores.

The cottage is well appointed with all the new electronics & WIFI with top of the line linens, pots, pans, & everything else you might need including a food processor.

What makes this cottage unique

From the upstairs loft bedroom you can look out over the Shenandoah River & the mountains which can also be seen from the screened porch & NO BUGS! Four legged babies like it to along with the owners because they can look out & see everything that is going on & still be safe. There is a large yard for them to play in if they are voiced commanded, otherwise you need a leash to walk on the road or over to the river.

The surroundings of the cottage is peaceful, quiet, secluded, private, & serene, a place where you can relax & get back to nature if you want or just chill out on the porch & watch the deer in the morning & late afternoon.

A place where you can totally relax!

Hope to come back again

  • 5 of 5

The entire week we stayed at Bittersweet Cottage was fantastic, we were looking for a relaxing vacation with quiet time, some fishing, along with our two small dogs. This cottage is much more than we could of hoped for. Shar made our stay perfect, the cottage was fully equipped with everything you could ever need except for the food. She gave us needed information on the area, where to locate groceries, anything and everything we needed. The cottage was also decorated in the most tasteful and welcoming decor you could imagine. She even supplied a doggie bed for our pups. Loved the screened in porch with the rockers which is where we enjoyed our coffee every morning. We hope to get back there again. Jack and Barbara

Cute, cozy and clean

  • 5 of 5

We hoped to see the fall colors the third week in Oct and rented the cottage, Bittersweet. The colors were a bust, but the cottage was terrific. It was very cozy and clean in a bucolic setting. We had easy access to Shenandoah National Park, canoeing the Shenandoah River, and Luray Caverns. Shar was a great hostess. We highly recommend Bittersweet when you are visiting the Shenandoah valley.

Quaint, peaceful, everything I hoped it would be.

  • 5 of 5

Let me start by saying Shar is wonderful and is a great host. The bittersweet retreat is exactly as described: a beautiful, quiet, get away in the mountains, across from a river, that is always hard to leave when the time comes. Absolutely would love to come stay again, hopefully for longer next time!

We loved the stay!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is located on the private road, which allowed us a quiet stay. The owner lives yards away so if you need ANYTHING you can always ask. Shar has exceptional hospitality. She made sure we needed nothing and that our stay was comfortable. You can see the river from the front porch. As promised the kitchen was fully stocked with necessities. The view of the mountains is amazing. You can enjoy it from any window. The cabin allowed us to unwind from the day of hike. We received a much needed rest.

Thank you Shar for your hospitality and we hope to visit again!
