About The Owner

I retired from the Government then opened a Victorian Bed & Breakfast that I ran for 20 years. I then decided I needed something on one floor so I bought a chicken house & converted it into an Italian Villa, that took about 5 years to finish. I like working in the yard & garden so that was the next project that I went after.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2012

Why The Owner chose Shenandoah Valley

I then decided I liked to have people around so I had a cottage built on the other piece of property I have. I wanted to be able to have the people get in touch with me if they needed something, but not too close to bother them. Then the patio went in so they would be able to have a fire & a charcoal grill, people like to get back to charcoal once in a while even though they have gas grills at home. The fire pit lets them toast marshmallows & make s'mores.

The cottage is well appointed with all the new electronics & WIFI with top of the line linens, pots, pans, & everything else you might need including a food processor.

What makes this cottage unique

From the upstairs loft bedroom you can look out over the Shenandoah River & the mountains which can also be seen from the screened porch & NO BUGS! Four legged babies like it to along with the owners because they can look out & see everything that is going on & still be safe. There is a large yard for them to play in if they are voiced commanded, otherwise you need a leash to walk on the road or over to the river.

The surroundings of the cottage is peaceful, quiet, secluded, private, & serene, a place where you can relax & get back to nature if you want or just chill out on the porch & watch the deer in the morning & late afternoon.

A place where you can totally relax!

Couldn't Be Better!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is amazing! The location is right near the river and couldn't be better. Shar was so awesome and has the cabin stocked with everything you need. It was very clean and perfect for a weekend getaway for my fiance and I. It was a short drive into Luray where there are many attractions and fun places to explore. We are definitely planning on making another trip back soon and we'll certainly look to book this cabin again!

Lovely Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were in need of a relaxing long weekend! We could not have found a better spot! Shar has worked to make sure that her renters have everything they need. There is a stocked kitchen, beautiful large bathroom, loft bedroom that looks out to the river, screened in porch, rocking chairs, a grill, fire pit area, dining table that overlooks the river, plenty of parking, flat screen TV, DVD player... She offered to bring over a large dog bed for our pup, so we wouldn't have to drag one from home. Shar gave recommendations for restaurants and a butcher the night we cooked out... she was right about everything!!! She is quite the baker! The first day we got oatmeal raisin cookies and the second day we got red velvet cake- YUM!! The thing was, we didn;t feel like renters by the time we left. We felt like family! You won't find a warmer, friendlier person, so there is no sense in looking further. This is the cottage you want!

Could not ask for anything better. Immaculate, beautiful views, lovely hostess, everything you need

  • 5 of 5

From the initial contact, Shar made this a wonderful experience. She was friendly, informative and easy to get in contact with. I emailed multiple times with questions and each time she responded with humor and additional info. Staying at Bittersweet is like going home and Shar is your favorite aunt. If I wasn't on a romantic getaway, I would have asked her to join us for some wine by the fire! Everything we needed was available which made the weekend easy. The cottage was extremely clean and well kept. The property is beautiful and the views are outstanding. It was very quiet except for the sound of the river which was so relaxing. We will definitely be staying here again.

Short But Sweet Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Shar,

Lenny and I are so glad to have found this little piece of heaven in the Luray, VA area. We planned only a two night stay since we were visiting for a wedding but now we wish we would have stayed longer. You home is very cozy and clean. You have put so much thought into the detail and decor. We were especially glad our dogs were welcome. Thank you for your personal attention during our stay. We look forward to coming back many times.

Just what we needed.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the Labor Day holiday. Everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Shar was the perfect host who was as close or as far away as you needed. We arrived late and were welcomed with baked chocolate chip cookies. Her home had all we needed and more. This is a small property but is perfect for up to four guests. There are great views of the river and mountains from the porch or dining area. We followed Shar's recommendation of a local canoeing company that was a great excursion. No complaints and we left feeling that it was time well spent.
