About Keith and Paula Henson

After growing up in the Spartanburg/Greenville area of SC, we married and moved to Knoxville, TN in the 70s. Keith began his career as an electrical engineer with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and I as an elementary school teacher in the Knox County School System. We raised our three children (who are all University of Tennessee graduates) in Knoxville and are now enjoying our new role as grandparents!

Keith and Paula Henson purchased this chalet in 2013

Why Keith and Paula Henson chose Gatlinburg

We have lived in the shadows of the beautiful Smoky Mountains in Knoxville for many years but only recently decided to make Gatlinburg our “home away from home” and purchased this lovely chalet near the summit of Ski Mountain. We discovered that Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have so much to offer our family. If it was peace and quiet surrounded by the beauty and wildlife of the park, hiking the many beautiful trails in the park, the excitement of shopping and sightseeing in the unique little town of Gatlinburg, or perhaps the thrill of the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and Amusement Park we were looking for we found it here. Gatlinburg has much to offer everyone in our family!

What makes this chalet unique

We quickly decided that the Chalet Village community on Ski Mountain was the place for us with its unique Bavarian flair and quaint chalets scattered across the mountainside! Of even greater importance was the close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our front door is located less than twenty steps from the park boundary and is within walking distance to one of the many beautiful trails open to visitors of the park. We immediately fell in love with the beautiful views from both the upper and lower covered porches of the chalet especially when the Ober Gatlinburg tram passed by with screams of excitement as passengers topped the highest tower! In the other direction through the park forest we can view the three distinct towering peaks of Mt. LeConte! We truly have a panoramic view! We enjoy the abundance of wildlife that is literally in our backyard and often delight in seeing mother bear and cubs passing through on their daily rounds to and from the park. There was never a doubt in our minds that this was the perfect getaway location! We also take pride in knowing that our guests receive the ultimate in hospitality! We personally prepare for our guests' arrival and add all of the personal touches to make it a special experience and one that will provide lasting memories!

PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved this place. Perfect getaway for a couple. Beautifully decorated. Paula was very helpful with any questions that I had. She is a great host, leaving special gifts for the special occasion. Helpful notes throughout the chalet. High on top of the mountain for an amazing view. Quiet and peaceful. Would recommend this place to any couple! Will definitely stay here again!

Once is not enough

  • 5 of 5

When you have stayed here with Paula and Keith, you will definitely want to return. There is every thing that you would look for in a vacation rental found here. From the initial contact with the owners through the actual stay, the experience was flawless.

Contact with the owners when booking: My inquiry was answered clearly and thoroughly in less than an hour after it was made. A follow-up question about wifi was answered immediately. They texted/e-mailed us during the stay to be sure that all was well.

Booking: Availability calendar and booking available online.

Location: It is convenient to Gatlinburg, Ober Gatlinburg, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and to the By-Pass if travelling to Pigeon Forge. It takes a few minutes to get to the chalet from the bottom of Ski Mountain Road, but that is necesssary to reach what is a magnificent view. All roads to the chalet are in great condition. There is no fire damage on this part of Ski Mountain.

Parking: The parking pad is adjacent to the front entrance with only two steps up to the entry level. It is easy to bring in luggage and supplies. There is adequate room for another vehicle if you have a visitor. Most importantly, there is room to turn around so that it is not necessary to back out of the drive way. The driveway and parking pad is paved and wide enough that you do not feel like you are going to fall off the mountain when on it.

Amenities: There are welcome snacks and goodies. The heat and lights were on when we arrived, and we did not go into a cold, dark, unfamiliar place. There are abundant instructions on how to operate everything in the chalet and information on area attractions including the owner's personal likes and preferences. There are plenty of supplies and items that two people would need. The king size bed had a great mattress and the linens were in perfect condition. Everything was as advertised and MORE.

The only thing missing: There were no mountain gnomes that magically appeared each night to clean our hiking boots for us. C'mon, Paula and Keith, what were you thinking!?!

It was a great experience with great owners and we are looking forward to returning some day. We will recommend this to all of our friends who are looking for a couples' getaway spot. Thank you, Paula and Keith, for sharing your property and making this a great experience.

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This is mine and my wife's second visit to this chalet. The owners remembered us from last year and made sure to personalize the chalet for our wedding anniversary visit ( anniversary card, wine, chocolates). This chalet is at the top of Ski Mountain Rd and has wonderful views. The chalet is exceptionally clean and very well furnished. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Henson for another wonderful stay!

Wonderful

The chalet was incredible. Owners communicated with us via text and email so we didn't feel alone, yet we never saw them! Unit was nicely decorated for Christmas. Very clean and well maintained. Nice view from the balconies, except when in the clouds.

Very Glad to Say - Not the Last Tenants at the Smoky Mountain High Chalet!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We rented Paula and Keith’s Chalet from Mon 28 Nov to Fri 02 Dec 2016. As everyone has attested the chalet is wonderful. We entered around 3:30 PM and first noted the set table complete with wine glasses, the fresh Pumpkin Bread on the counter with a welcome note, and the decorated lit Christmas tree behind the pool table along with other decorations. While loading the refrigerator I found a bottle of wine and in the freezer I found six large frozen mugs. Eventually as we finished unloading we found the box of chocolates on the bed too, but it was time to utilize some of the frozen mugs.

Unfortunately, we never got back to the chocolates. Around 7 PM when we looked out towards the Smoky National Park there was a large orange glow. Finding a list of emergency phone numbers on the refrigerator we called and discovered that the Chimney Top 2 fire storm had indeed spread quickly and there was now a fire on Ski Mountain Rd between us and town. We packed up and left around 7:30 PM leaving some stuff behind. They ended up issuing a mandatory evacuation around 9PM. We made it to a hotel in Asheville around 11:30 PM.

Paula and Keith made it back to check on their Chalet on Fri 02 Dec 2016 and I am very glad to say that it was not damaged by the fire. The only damage was caused by the inspectors that broke in the front door. They told us that they would be back at the Chalet on Sat 03 Dec 2016 to replace the front door. We decided to meet them at the Chalet to retrieve our stuff and to see the damage to the area ourselves too.

As expected they are wonderful people and we immediately felt welcomed. We loaded up our stuff and then they took us around the Wiley Oakley Rd area to check on the condition of some of their friend’s homes. That area was hit hard and most of them were totally destroyed including their friend’s home.

The devastation in the area is hard to comprehend. Mother Nature will take the area back and make it beautiful again very quickly. Mankind will take longer to rebuild in the area, but they will and the area will recover and be wonderful once again. Thankfully the loss of life, while still tragic, was much lower than I ever imagined. Just think what could have happened had this wild fire spread only one week prior during Thanksgiving. The confusion and loss of life would have been almost unimaginable.

The Smoky Mountain High Chalet is as described by everyone else and it a great place. Even though we were only there for a few hours, we have

Owner's Response: We will forever remember the night that we were praying for your safe evacuation during the firestorm that so suddenly and unexpectedly made it's way to Ski Mountain. Never have we been more thankful than to know that you were both safe and out of harm's way that night! When we received word the next day that our entire side of the mountain had been spared we were again feeling very blessed. Out of this tragic event that was so devastating for many of our friends and neighbors, a new friendship has emerged and we will forever feel a bond and connection to our new friends from LA. We don't often have the pleasure of meeting our guests. These were unusual circumstances and even though it was a difficult day for all of us, meeting and visiting with both of you was just what we needed! Thank you for being such wonderful guests! As you say...Gatlinburg will recover quickly and we are already seeing evidence of that! As they say we are "Mountain Tough"! The beautiful Smokies are still here and with spring will come new life! We are forever grateful for you and we look forward to keeping in touch and crossing paths with you both in 2017!

5 Stars-You DO want to stay here!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I went to Gatlinburg to get away for a long weekend before my new school year started. I picked Smokey Mountain High as our home away from home. We hit the jackpot! Paula is such a wonderful hostess! She thinks of everything! When we arrived, she had left us 2 banana nut muffins, a snack basket, 2 bottles of water and chocolates on the bed! She left a bottle of wine also, but my husband and I do not drink, so we left it for the next guests. The chalet is so cutely decorated with black bears! Keith and Paula have a Vacation Info book that is full of helpful information! The chalet was very clean and a wonderful, cozy place to come back to after a long day in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. We enjoyed using the hot tub each night that we were there. We were lucky enough to see a bear the first day that we there...not at the chalet, but going down the mountain headed to Gatlinburg. It crossed directly in front of our car! You cannot go wrong staying at this wonderful chalet! We will definitely go back there!

Owner's Response: Barbara, It was our pleasure to host you both! If it's anyone who understands how important it is to have that relaxing "down time" before the school year starts it's this retired first grade teacher! So glad it was all you hoped it would be! We love preparing for our guests and providing them with a fun and relaxing place to come back to after a day filled with activity. Thank you for your kind words but mostly for being such wonderful guests! The pleasure was all ours!
