If your idea of a great vacation is connecting with the natural world, this is your spot. Book now to reserve your place to relax and unwind in this perfect Shelter Island setting.
You will be enjoying your vacation staying at a waterfront home in a premium location on Shelter Island, located a few steps from shops in village on north side of Shelter Island in walking distance to ferry/train to New York City. It is not located on Route 114. You turn off Route 114 down what looks like a gravel driveway, but is really a quiet lane that runs along Chase Creek. Look behind you as you enter the driveway and see where ospreys in a nest on top of a large tree.
You will see the yellow house behind a cedar fence as you walk down the lane. This home is very close to the water. With many windows to enjoy the view, it is tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture and warm fabrics. The twin couches in the spacious living room provide great seating to watch films via Netflix or on the DVD player, or (complimentary wireless internet service/ cable tv is provided). You will probably want to spend the most time on the screened porch where there is plenty of room to socialize. Next to the porch, stretched between two large oak trees, is a comfortable Pawley's Island hammock. You can watch the birds and snooze. After the sun goes down, you can see the sparkle of lights in the Heights reflected in the water.
After you have rested and are feeling more ambitious, you can take the blue kayak from the shore in front of the house, paddle north on Chase Creek under First Bridge, right into Dering Harbor and see Shelter Island's waterfront homes from the waterside, and get close-ups of the luxury watercraft in Dering Harbor.
The Master bedroom has a queen-size bed with views of Chase Creek. The second bedroom has two twin beds. The Bath has a shower and tub combination. Both bedrooms are air-conditioned, although it is rare to need to use the air conditioning because of the breezy location.
The modern kitchen has a cozy table to sit and talk and eat snacks by the windows.
There is an out-building arranged as an additional water view room with screens, a card table and chairs, providing additional space to socialize or a place to focus in case you have to check in with the office. The wireless internet works very well all over the property, so you can sit under the shade of the oak trees in the adirondack chairs, close to the water, or even sit on the dock, and still be connected to the outside world.
The private yard on the water side of the home has plenty of room to play catch, throw horseshoes and enjoy badminton.
On a calm morning, glide in the kayak under the bridge into Dering Harbor, and glide quietly through schools of bluefish close to the surface, and see hundreds of bright yellow dorsal fins barely sticking out of the water, as you silently pass by. Or just lie face down at the end of the dock and watch schools of smaller fish move along Chase Creek, feeding so that they can grow bigger and return to the sea. Watch the herons and egrets silently target their breakfast as they stand motionless in the shallows at low tide. The ospreys usually come at low tide and sit high in the branches of the large oak trees and call out cree---cree---cree to let you know they have arrived. Yet, despite being so surrounded by nature, you can take a 2 minute walk into the village and have something delicious to eat or drink, do some shopping, or walk the streets looking at the beautiful Victorian homes in The Heights and the gorgeous views of sailboats traversing the Peconic River and Greenport.
The property is currently reserved from August 2017 through Labor Day Weekend 2017. We still have some openings available before and after those dates.
Note: We are now limiting guests to a 9 day minimum rental stay. The daily rate is $336. You can stay longer if the home is available. We found that persons with two weeks vacation like to stay 9 or 10 days, and then spend the rest of their time elsewhere. This gives us a few days to use the home ourselves, and extra time to make sure the house is in the best condition for the next tenants.
We have several guests who love this property so much that they come back year after year! We have made several improvement since we acquired it in the spring of 2012. We make improvements every year. A dishwasher makes it easy to clean up after breakfast or after an evening cookout. We want you to have a wonderful, memorable experience, and be refreshed and relaxed during your stay.

This property appeals to nature lovers and people who are looking for a peaceful place to vacation that is conveniently located to the ferry to Greenport and the train to New York City. You will have million-dollar views and easy access to all the best that Shelter island offers. To get there, just take the train from New York City's Pennsylvania Station to Greenport, where the ferry leaves every ten minutes for the 15 minute ride to Shelter Island. It's less than a 10 minute walk from the ferry through the scenic village to this property.
After your experience at this lovely home on this lovely island, you will feel rejuvenated and alive from being truly connected with nature, from experiencing the sea air, the cooling breezes, and the sparkling water. And when you want to go to dinner or have an ice cream or just connect with other people, it's less than five minutes walk. Shelter Island is small enough that a bicycle can easily take you anywhere you want to go. Or if you want to imbibe at one of the world class restaurants on the island, it's easy to take a short cab home and keep your vacation worry free.
Our week has been fantastic... peaceful and tranquil. Away from the city life. A joy to share our week with wildlife, the water and the quiet of the island.... it may become busier but still would be a great escape. Much recommended.
This place is a gem. The rooms are cozy and clean, but the best places to savor the property are the screened porch, the hammock, the Adirondack chairs facing the water, and dining in the converted garage with a view of the creek. We loved having access to the kayak and the grill, our kids loved the swing, and we rented bikes practically next door. Birders will love seeing ospreys that nest all over the island, the egrets gracing the creek, and all variety of smaller birds congregating at the feeders. The owner was gracious and exceedingly helpful; during our stay he responded promptly to our Qs about the property and places to visit on the island. I would definitely look into staying here again on our next visit to Shelter Island.
What a wonderful find! We've been going to Shelter Island for years, but this was our first time spending a full week with our young kids. The house is a quick walk to town and easily accessible to the best attractions on the island, and yet, it's secluded location offers great privacy. It's a beautiful piece of property on the creek, allowing for a lovely sunset every night. I loved that I was always looking out onto the water. The house is feels large for it's size with nice flow, and a large screened-in porch was a great spot for reading, playing games or just bird watching. Birder or not, you'll find yourself reaching for the bird book to identify those charming little creatures! My favorite spot was the converted one-car garage into a screened in room. We ate dinner out there every night. Having access to the kayak for a quick ride over the the harbor or over to the tall grasses to see the egrets. Our kids loved the bunk beds and we appreciated a nice mattress in the master bedroom! Bring your bikes!
Can't say enough good things about my stay in Shelter Island. The location is perfect for anyone without a car. Convenient to travel on the LIRR -- walk to ferry -- walk to cottage. Close enough to anything you might need in the small town of Shelter Island Height. The cottage itself is clean and bright and has everything needed for a quick getaway or even an extended stay. Perfect place to relax and unplug from your world -- on the porch, in the hammock, sitting on the banks of the creek. Or take a short bike or cab ride to the Sunset Resort for beautiful Crescent Beach, French cuisine or even a little night life. I will be back!!
Adorable summer cottage in a secluded area. House is nicely kept and the décor is very welcoming and extremely comfortable. We stayed here for a long weekend and had such a wonderful time we called to see if we could stay an extra day. We had 4 adults and a toddler and there were still 2 bunk beds empty. We enjoyed sitting in the screened in porch watching the birds and scenery. The property is right on the water so we kayaked from the house. We biked the neighborhood and enjoyed strolling through the quaint town. One day we drove around the entire Island just to check out the houses and views. There are a bunch of very nice restaurants in the area, but if you get bored you could easily take the ferry to Greenport. We would highly recommend staying here. It was extremely relaxing and we can’t wait to go again.
Note: The rate is $336 per night. We are now limiting guests to a 9 day minimum rental stay. You can stay longer if the dates are open. We have found that people with two weeks vacation like to stay 9 or 10 days, and then spend the rest of their time in NYC or Connecticut. The 9 day minimum makes renting easier for us, and we have more time to use the home ourselves.
The unique feature of this home is the spectacular, restful location, shaded from the summer sun under a grove of large white oak trees. Take a very short walk into the village. You don't have to drive to get breakfast, coffee, wine or liquor, dinner or entertainment. The remarkable views and ability to watch Ospreys and Kingfishers feed close up throughout the day attracts nature lovers and busy professionals who relax and enjoy the serene setting. It's so easy and comfortable, you won't want to leave! Take a book with you to read in the Pawley's Island hammock, and let the breeze lull you to sleep.
When you get up in the morning for hot coffee or tea, sit on the screened porch and view the woodpeckers, wrens and chickadees putting on a show for you. Watch the morning unfold across Chase Creek. The tide is always changing, the sky is always changing, allowing you to enjoy nature's endless variety. Lie flat on the dock and you can see minnows and crabs scurrying around on the bottom of the pristine waters of Chase Creek. Fish for Snappers and Porgies off the dock in the late afternoon. Sit in the waterside Adirondack chairs in the evening with a glass of wine or a cocktail and watch the sun set.
Many people will bicycle around the Shelter Island in the course of a week, eat at the great restaurants, enjoy the various beaches, get ice cream, and spend quality time with the family on this special island. If you like to barbecue, there is a Weber kettle grill ready for your use. If you like to write, or want to play cards with friends, the out-building has been set up as a great hideaway with a water view, and screen doors let the refreshing breeze keep you cool.
