You may have just found the perfect summer vacation cottage! You will enjoy views of Lake Michigan from the living room and deck. The cottage is also nestled among giant oak trees. Michigan cottages have names and this one is naturally called MidOaks.
The video included in this listing is about the Dune Sanctuary directly in front of our cottage. Enjoy a hike in the Sanctuary where you will see deer, raccoon, possum, beaver, cranes, swans, you name it.
The Dune Sanctuary is no longer in peril as it has been saved in perpetuity by the generous citizens of White River Township. The video is a bit long, but gives you the idea of what an incredibly special place this is.
MidOaks is located on a private road, yet close to many activities and only a 5 minute walk to miles of sandy Lake Michigan beach. No long steps to navigate. There is also a small parking area/drop off spot near the entrance to the beach. The beach is fine sand not rocks with crystal clear water.
The cottage is equipped with beach chairs, beach toys, bikes, indoor and outdoor games galore, books...everything you could want for a great vacation. If you are bringing kids, let us know their ages and we can set out appropriate toys.
One thing we don't have is a TV - but that's the whole point - to get away from the hustle and bustle. Of course we do have WIFI so you can watch pretty much anything you want. But we find not having that big screen staring you in the face encourage adults and kids alike to pursue other interests - including the wonderful pleasure of just hanging out and talking to one another
You can enjoy a game of croquet in the large front yard. A rarely used tennis court is just a 5 minute walk. If you'd rather read a book there's a hammock for whiling away a quiet afternoon.
Special summer activities abound in Montague which is only 10 minutes by car. There is a supermarket, old fashioned ice cream parlor, gift shops, coffee house, book store, kayaking, restaurants, drugstore, gas station and farmers market, all within a 2 minute walk of each other. We have a jazz festival, chamber music festival and concerts at the band shell every Tuesday night. Plus fireworks on the 4th!
If you are a biker, you'll love the deserted roads that circle Lake Michigan. We have 4 very basic bikes available for you to use.
The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen for gourmet cooking or just reheating a pizza.
In the fall and winter, enjoy the warmth of a large wood burning fireplace after an afternoon of cross country skiing. If you're more inclined towards indoor activities, the cottage is stocked with books, games, puzzles and more. WIFI available.
The large living room has a vaulted ceiling and a wood burning fireplace. My husband chops and splits all the wood himself, so you'll never run out.
Sunsets are amazing in the winter, with an afterglow that fills the sky.
Lake Michigan freezes into a moon like landscape with 10 foot frozen drifts and a walk on the beach is actually quite remarkable.
If there is snow, which there usually is, you can cross country ski from your front door through the woods. There is also ice fishing on White Lake.
We have 4 sets of cross country skis, but you'll need your own boots.
This has been our personal vacation home for many years, It is in excellent condition with many recent upgrades. You will find indoor and outdoor games, beach chairs, bikes, books etc to enjoy a great vacation
Pam Prosch purchased this cottage in 1940
Just a 5 minute walk to the beach on the forest foot path. No long steps to climb. There is also a drop off place for cars to drop off kids and beach toys. On the way to the beach is the Old Channel Inn a great place for lunch and dinner.
The property overlooks the white lake area bird sanctuary. The area is filled with forest animals and is a great place to see great blue herons, eagles and more.
The town of Montague has one of the best small independent book stores with live entertainment and a full coffee service. Every amenity is available.
We are just a 10 minute walk to White Lake which is 7 miles long and home to national sailboat regattas. White Lake has a picturesque, navigable entrance into Lake Michigan.
This little cottage in the woods was amazing. It was well kept, clean,
thoroughly furnished and even had little extras. i.e. tin full of
hershey kisses, pantry with spices and herbs, games and outdoor
equipment for entertainment.
You were very kind and helpful. You were very willing to answer any
questions we had. Even the questions you had already answered in an
email you had sent days before I didn't read until half way through
our weekend. Sorry :)
I would and already have recommended this cottage to friends and family.
Thanks so much Pam and Tim for sharing your little piece of heaven
with us! We plan to be back again sometime.
This rustic cottage has everything you could want - character, comfort and location. The decor is beautifully understated with antiques and quirky decorative elements but is not overly 'themed'. For cooking, it is perfectly fitted out with every piece of kitchen equipment which you could need. For those who love an open fire, the fire is the centre piece of the living room. For those who need a good night's sleep, the beds are comfortable and warm. The location is great, with views from the picture window of Lake Michigan, framed by beautiful pine trees. We stayed for a snowy winter break and had the most relaxing and rejuvenating stay. Highly recommended!
Pam and Tim provide wonderful accommodations to take you back to a slower, more thoughtful pace. Highly recommend. Gail
We recently spent a week at Mid Oaks and it was exactly what we had hoped for, a home away from home. The cottage is well maintained and had everything we needed for our vacation along the beach. The beach is a short walk away and we spent several evenings enjoying the sunset - a photographers dream spot. Silver Lake and Duck Lake were within 30 minute drives and were great great spots for our kids to enjoy the smaller lakes that fed into Lake Michigan and it's big exciting waves , as well for climbing dunes. We also visited Meinert Park with it's large quiet beach and watched the kite boarders on Lake Michigan. All your grocery needs can be found in downtown Montague so you can make all your own meals. But we also enjoyed eating at the Old Channel Inn several nights after long days of fun. And of course we stopped in Montague for ice cream a few times. My wife's favorite stores in Montague were the local book store The Book Nook and Studio 2, a lovely art gallery featuring local artists. The owners clearly care about this cottage and have done a great job making it your home away from home for a great vacation destination.
This cottage was wonderful! It had every accommodation in a quiet and quaint setting. The deck was lovely to relax on at the end of the day, although I would have liked more of a view of the lake. It was clean and very comfortable. Exploring the tiny towns of Whitehall and Montague were such fun. We love Lake Michigan!! We had a great time! Thanks so much.
My family and I have been coming to Mid Oaks for the past four years, and we absolutely love it there - so much so, that my fiance and I will be getting married there this October! The house is beautiful and very well maintained, with three big bedrooms, a huge deck on the back that overlooks Lake Michigan beyond the dunes, and a big living/dining room with a lovely fireplace. The cottage feels very open and bright, even nestled as it is among the trees (which is fabulous, especially for birdwatching - we just saw a family of Eastern Screech Owls hanging out above the deck on our most recent visit). My favorite part of the cottage is actually the front sunroom, which has lawn chairs and a darts board up on the wall. The beach is just down the hill, and is soft and sandy - not at all rocky, with really clean, clear water. The twin towns of Montague and Whitehall are not far away (within biking distance, if you like to cycle) and are both really cute - I love taking my son to Lipka's Soda Fountain every summer for milkshakes. The towns are laid-back, not at all crowded or stuffy, and the people are always really nice. I would especially recommend Mid Oaks to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation with children - there's no TV, but with the beach just down the road, a swing set and hammocks in the front yard, and a big park with playground in town, my son has never wanted for screen time when we are there. Pam and Tim do a great job of keeping the place beautiful and well-stocked (begonias on the deck, firewood and charcoal ready in the pantry, etc.) Overall, we love Mid Oaks, and are looking forward to being back both this autumn and next summer!
Great cottage! Three couples met from different states. Plenty of room. Great sunsets. Beach just a short walk down the hill. Loved the location, and the owners were next door and couldn't have been any nicer!
Cozy cottage with great views of Lake Michigan and breathtaking sunsets from living room and large deck. Over a mile of beautiful beaches. Near everything including tennis, golf, sailing, kayaking and bike trails. Great restaurant a five minute walk away. Just a short walk to 8 mile long White lake where national regattas take place. True locally grown fruit and vegetables at Farmer's market every Wed and Sat. Fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan with knowledgeable captain. Music in the band shell on the lake and live theater. Antique hunting. Lots of festivals during the summer and fall, pumpkin roll, fish boil, arts and crafts etc.
