Acadia National Park: In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson set aside 6000 acres (within what is now Acadia National Park) as Sieur de Monts National Monument. With the acquisition of more land and private support and funding, in 1919 President Wilson signed an act establishing Lafayette National Park. In 1929 the parks name was changed to Acadia.

Acadia National Park was established to protect the area's spectacular scenic values, Maine's rock bound coast, its coastal and its offshore islands as characterized by the geologic features, natural history and the native plant and animal life. Forty five miles of rustic carriage roads weave around the mountains and through the valleys of Acadia National Park, the gift of philanthropist John D Rockefeller, Jr., and family. Rockefeller, a skilled horseman, desired to travel on motor free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. His efforts resulted in roads with sweeping vistas and close up views of the landscape.

Cadillac Mountain: At 1,530 feet, Cadillac Mountain is not only the tallest mountain in Acadia National Park, but also the tallest mountain along the eastern coast of the United States. Rising high above the town of Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain offers magnificent views of the Porcupine Islands and Frenchman Bay. Explore the summit of this granite mountain along a .3-mile trail, which includes wayside exhibits about natural and human history. Portions of this trail are accessible to wheelchair users.

About Steve & Michelle Cowan

The Cowans, formerly from Maine now living on the West Coast.

Steve & Michelle Cowan purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Steve & Michelle Cowan chose Downeast and Acadia

We are originally from Maine and purchased Loons Nest Cottage to ensure our children have the opportunity to experience summers in Maine the way we did as kids. Beech Hill Pond is a very special place as it is close to Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, but provides a peaceful retreat after a day of hiking and sightseeing. The lake is great for kayaking and canoeing, or just watching the Loons.

What makes this cottage unique

Private sandy beach, secluded getaway from it all spot. We also own property #162312 Sandy Cove Cottage next-door.

Tranquil. Way too far from Acadia.

  • 3 of 5

The location of Beech Hill Pond is exceptional if you plan to spend many days at the cabin itself. If you are looking for a home base for Acadia excursions it will be too far. We drove to Acadia 3 of 4 days. Each time it was one hour to the very beginning of Mt Desert Island in light, mid-October traffic. We followed one leaf peeper leaving the island one day and it took us 90 minutes to get "home." Even as I map the directions today in mid-November when everyone is gone it shows 1 hour to Bar Harbor.

Outside: In mid-October Beech Hill Pond was deserted. We only saw one fishing boat going out and coming back. I have gobs of great photographs from our quiet paddles around the pond. It could not have been more photogenic and we felt like we owned the lake. We dressed for the cold weather and had a ton of fun exploring. We apprciated having fire wood and enjoyed our bonfire, though the damp wood made it a challenge to light.

Inside: The cottage itself is snug but perfectly sized for anything you would want to do. The bedrooms are small but all you do is sleep in there anyway. (Note: no place to put luggage in the bedrooms.) The kitchen is the size of my full house kitchen! Consider the weather. The cabin was hella cold when we arrived at 8pm on a Thursday night and owing to the cold weather--in 4 days the floor (and the tub and the toilet seat, grr) never did want to warm up even though the gas stove got the air temp warm enough to melt butter.

The owners VERY graciously allowed us a late check out on our departure date because we wanted to sneak in one more paddle.

Three hesitations for me:

First, the owner only replied to two of my text messages. To the other two texts, in which I asked him to call me, he neither called nor replied via text.

Second, there are two likely problems with the plumbing. I'm no plumbing expert, but I did go to architecture school and I am a licensed builder. My experience leads me to believe that 1. The venting is inadequate [the tub backs up, the water in the toilet sloshes when the tub drains, and the sink drain loudly glugs when the tub or washing machine drains] and 2. there is no p-trap at the kitchen sink, which is the most problematic owing to potential methane gas leakage. I texted with my credentials and twice offered to describe what I experienced, so that he might be made aware, but never heard back.

And third, you are expected to strip beds, launder towels, do dishes and vacuum/sweep before checkout.

Owner's Response: Thank you Nissa for renting and your glowing review of our cozy Loons Nest Cottage; we agree it is a very special place! While both secluded and quiet, the cottage is also close enough to Acadia to make day trips (45 minutes +- depending peak fall foliage traffic such as you experienced) and retreat back to Beech Hill Pond in time for an evening lakeside campfire. Sorry for the confusion regarding the tub drain, we would have been happy to have our local plumber stop by to check the drain if you had let us know during your stay. We received your feedback several days after your departure, so we just had him clear the clogged drain while closing up the cottage for the winter. Thank you again for allowing us to host your Maine vacation!

Wonderful Week

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful time during our stay at Loons Nest Cottage. The house was in great shape, and very cozy. The house is tucked away in a quiet cove, so you don't hear the boats and planes as much as you can on other parts of the lake.

Charming and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and by the second day it felt like we owned it. The temperature was around 80 all week and there was no need for AC, the fans kept the cottage cool. During our stay one of dogs had an intestinal problem which flared up and needed emergency surgery (this was a problem which she has had for years). We were able to easily find an excellent vet in the area and the surgery went well. The cottage was so comfortable and clean that we had no problems taking care of our recovering patient. We enjoyed sitting on the deck which over looks the lake and a fire or two in the fire pit. Very relaxing. The only thing that would of made our stay better, would have been a lot less dirt road, which is why 4 stars instead of 5. Thank you, over all very nice.

Quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

Steve and Michelle Cowan have a beautiful place. It is nestled in a quiet Cove. I enjoyed listening to the loons while having my coffee in the morning on the deck. The cabin was stocked with everything you could think of that you might need.

Quaint and Tastefully decorated with a beautiful view.

  • 5 of 5

It was a cozy warm, relaxing vacation with my family, which was exactly what we were looking for. The house is well maintained and looks like the pictures displayed. The lake is crystal clear with beautiful scenery. It's about a 20 minute ride to Ellsworth, and about a 40 minute ride to Arcadia. The only possible con would be the dirt road if your not expecting it, which was about 4 miles (was not a problem for me). My kids loved swimming and the fishing the lake had to offer (lots of small mouth bass). I Would definitely go back.
