About Lisabeth Chester Oxman
The Chester family, five young children and their mom, came to Maine 40 years ago from suburban New Jersey and rented the house now known as the Shore Path Cottage for the summer. The mom, Roberta, was sufficiently smitten with the house and the view and the area and Acadia National Park and Maine folks to pack up the kids and move here permanently when the house came up for sale. Cold winters, and a new cultural experience notwithstanding (She often felt, literally, like a babe in the woods), there were never any regrets because it was simply so beautiful in every season. The kids grew up mastering winter and summer sports so that two of the daughters, Melinda and Lisabeth, are able to offer our guests the valuable, informed information from years of their experience which they need to make their stay most memorable and enjoyable. Four years ago, the garage that was built in 1880 came down and the Bird's Nest went up. Roberta, whose nickname is 'Bird' thought that would be a good name . Though it is available as a long terms rental, it is Bird's nest in December and January. We feel , and somewhat objectively, that our location on the ocean and on a quiet residential street in town is as good as it gets in Bar Harbor. in keeping with the tasteful quality of the decor of the main house, the Birds Net is furnished beautifully and lovingly. Designed by Roc Caivano, the area's premier architect, with the assistance of Lisabeth Chester Oxman, also an architect, you will enjoy the cathedral ceiling and the many windows. The Bird's Nest was originally our family residence and now we enjoy the pleasure of sharing it with our guests. ,

Excellent location and accomodations!
What a great little house! The location was excellent. Turn left out the door and it's a very short walk to the Shore Path. Turn right and it's a few short blocks to the town center! Could even walk to the grocery store if you didn't need a lot of heavy stuff. We barely had to use our car which was great because the streets are very crowded. The house was lovely, well cared for and very clean! Had everything we needed in the kitchen and baths! Can't say enough good things! Our hosts were great and genuinely wanted to know if there was anything we needed to make our stay any better. We didn't!!
No better location, lovely property
This is a guest cottage next to the main house. It is clean and fresh and feels fairly new, with comfortable furnishings. The kitchen was fully equipped down to the coffee filters and saran wrap, which was a nice touch. The location is the best in Bar Harbor. You are two short blocks to Main Street in the middle of town, and 100 yards to the ocean. You can walk right from the yard onto the "Shore Path", which is amazing. You can get anywhere in town withing 15 minutes walking. It is maybe a 15 minute drive to the entrance to Acadia National Park, and maybe 20-30 minutes if you want to check out the precious little towns of Seal Cover or Northeast Harbor. If you want a special dinner one night, walk up to the Havana restaurant - fit for foodies.
Our hostess, Lisabeth, was lovely. She and her mother Roberta live in the house next door, where they also have a B&B with a few rooms. If we ever had a question about the area, or the house, they were available just be walking next door. This was not our first trip to Bar Harbor, but definitely the nicest and most relaxing - having a little space to stretch out, and a full kitchen and dining area to hang out over coffee and breakfast on lazy mornings. Overall a wonderful stay.
Cute, comfortable, & conveniently located Cottage
We had a great stay at Birds Nest Cottage. I've been to Bar Harbor many times but this was my first time staying in walking distance of town. This is a great location; easy walk to town via Shore Path or streets. This is convenient for exploring town and for hopping on the Island Explorer (free) to explore Acadia without a car.
The Cottage was comfortable and well appointed. The hostess lives and runs the B & B next door and is as helpful or non-obtrusive as you want her to be.
Property conveniently located for visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia
The owners are very nice, and helpful for questions we had
on things to do and places to eat.
It did not have TV, but we never had time to stop and watch TV.
It does have wireless for internet.
We very much enjoyed our lovely guests from Texas and we are happy they enjoyed our location and suggestions for activities and restaurants in the area..
This cottage was the perfect location for exploring Bar Harbor and Acadia Park.
You can walk into town and the entrance to the park is 5 minutes away.
The cottage was spotless and beds very comfortable.
Lisabeth was the perfect hostess, very warm and welcoming.
I will definitely recommend this place to friends.
Perfect stay in Bar Harbor!
The Bird's Nest Cottage was perfect for my family of 4 and my in laws for a visit to Bar Harbor. The upstairs accommodated my husband and me, plus our two children (age 9 and 11) , and my parents-in-law were very comfortable in the bedroom on the first floor. The washing machine and dryer were new and very convenient. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything we needed (although we ate out almost every evening!). The cottage is ideally situated on a small quiet lane, yet only about 4-5 houses away from downtown Bar Harbor AND is also on the property of Shore Path Cottage, a B&B with an expansive lawn that leads down to the ocean and Shore Path. Acadia is less than a 10 minute drive away, or easily accessible by the bus system (and the closest bus stop is a 5 minute walk away). It does NOT get any better and we would definitely rent this cottage again in a heartbeat!
Located on the beautiful historic Shore Path Cottage you are with minutes walking distance to all Bar Harbor has to offer! Whale watching, lighthouse cruises, bike or kayak rentals, restaurants, shops are all within 5 minutes form the house! By day, the incredible world-famous Acadia National Park, an easy bike ride or a 5 minute drive away offers a range of activities for every age and inclination that includes hiking the trails, biking, boating, golfing, swimming at Sand Beach or at the many lakes, whale watching, deep sea fishing, and kayaking. Sail with a naturalist to an outlying island for a walking tour of flora, fauna and some fascinating history, meet with a park ranger for an astronomical look at the night sky, or awake before the crack of dawn, and from the pink granite of Cadillac Mountain be the first in the U.S. to watch the sunrise.
You may choose to experience Mt. Desert Island by car (or from the window of the park's convenient, and ecologically mindful, shuttle buses) on the 19 mile loop road. Either way, you will want to stop and take photos beside a legend or a scenic overlook. From any perspective on land or sea, the majesty and the intimacy of this park will inspire you to stand in awe, as well as to enter into it.
Bar Harbor, as well as the other towns on and near the island, has excellent restaurants, shops, concerts, museums and interesting seasonal events, such as music, art and film festivals. Mt. Desert Island and the area referred to as 'Downeast' – where the trees outnumber the people and the night sky is brighter with stars than city lights – has become famous for its clean air, clean water and its natural beauty. It has been preserved and protected by all those who have treasured this area for generations, both those who make their home here, and those who return year after year.
Bar Harbor abounds in art galleries, antique stores and craft shows, as well as musical events and theatre presentations, all within easy proximity. The Jessup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor as well as the other libraries on this island features many well-known interesting speakers throughout the season. Whichever activities you choose, we will point you in the right direction to make your stay at the Bird's nest Cottage truly enjoyable and memorable.
