About Lisabeth Chester Oxman

The Chester family, five young children and their mom, came to Maine 40 years ago from suburban New Jersey and rented the house now known as the Shore Path Cottage for the summer. The mom, Roberta, was sufficiently smitten with the house and the view and the area and Acadia National Park and Maine folks to pack up the kids and move here permanently when the house came up for sale. Cold winters, and a new cultural experience notwithstanding (She often felt, literally, like a babe in the woods), there were never any regrets because it was simply so beautiful in every season. The kids grew up mastering winter and summer sports so that two of the daughters, Melinda and Lisabeth, are able to offer our guests the valuable, informed information from years of their experience which they need to make their stay most memorable and enjoyable. Four years ago, the garage that was built in 1880 came down and the Bird's Nest went up. Roberta, whose nickname is 'Bird' thought that would be a good name . Though it is available as a long terms rental, it is Bird's nest in December and January. We feel , and somewhat objectively, that our location on the ocean and on a quiet residential street in town is as good as it gets in Bar Harbor. in keeping with the tasteful quality of the decor of the main house, the Birds Net is furnished beautifully and lovingly. Designed by Roc Caivano, the area's premier architect, with the assistance of Lisabeth Chester Oxman, also an architect, you will enjoy the cathedral ceiling and the many windows. The Bird's Nest was originally our family residence and now we enjoy the pleasure of sharing it with our guests.

Lisabeth Chester Oxman purchased this house in 2009

Why Lisabeth Chester Oxman chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

The best location in Bar Harbor, beautiful accommodations, convenient, ocean access on property, quiet, private, parking, minutes by foot from restaurants, activities, and biking distance to the park. Also, owners who have lived here for forty years are on site as a great resource for things to do and places to go to best enjoy your stay.

What makes this house unique

A walk down our beautiful lawn takes you to the historic Shore Path, which is a path along the shore which takes you into the town of Bar Harbor. We are also down a quiet street, minutes to the center of Bar Harbor with it's restaurants, shops, a movie theatre, bike rentals, just a few minutes walk away!

Perfect stay in Bar Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

The Bird's Nest Cottage was perfect for my family of 4 and my in laws for a visit to Bar Harbor. The upstairs accommodated my husband and me, plus our two children (age 9 and 11) , and my parents-in-law were very comfortable in the bedroom on the first floor. The washing machine and dryer were new and very convenient. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything we needed (although we ate out almost every evening!). The cottage is ideally situated on a small quiet lane, yet only about 4-5 houses away from downtown Bar Harbor AND is also on the property of Shore Path Cottage, a B&B with an expansive lawn that leads down to the ocean and Shore Path. Acadia is less than a 10 minute drive away, or easily accessible by the bus system (and the closest bus stop is a 5 minute walk away). It does NOT get any better and we would definitely rent this cottage again in a heartbeat!

Bird's Nest Cottage in Bar Harbor Maine

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was perfect for our needs. Four adults and two children. They could Improve the property by using room darkening shades upstairs,,,,it gets very light very early!

We had a pleasant stay....any issues we had were taken care of quickly. Quick walk to town or along the shore path which was also a short walk, Easily done by a four year old,

We enjoyed the yard swing and hammock and many walks down the path to the water and rocks. Also spent time in Acadia National Park hiking and exploring. This was a short ride by vehicle. If you like crowds you will like Bar Harbor....the traffic and amount of people was over what we enjoy!! Crazy busy. But very quiet at the cottage and beach. We had a great time. The owner promised my grand girls chocolate chip cookies and then didn't follow thru...they kept would have been nice if she had not said it or followed thru. Small potatoes I know. We had an enjoyable trip.

We did a whale tour and a lighthouse tour. Both were nice. We saw whales from head to fin :) and that was awesome!

Perfect Location and Perfectly Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My wife, two children (7 & 10), and I had a wonderful week-long visit at the Bird's Nest. The rental was very clean and had everything we needed. The second floor was a great suite for our kids to enjoy so we could relax downstairs!

It was the perfect location to be able to easily walk into downtown Bar Harbor for shopping and dining. It was also right on the Shore Path and a short walk to the sandbar to Bar Island to provide some adventure right out your door. A full week was the perfect amount of time to really get to relax and enjoy everything the island has to offer.

Many of the best Acadia National Park attractions are only a short drive from the house. As a photographer I was able to get out to photograph these amazing locations and be home before my family missed me: Great Head (10 min), Thunder Hole/Boulder Beach (15 min), Cadillac Mountain (20 min), Bass Harbor Lighthouse (30 min).

Owner's Response: Thanks Thomas! It was a pleasure hosting you and your family. Thanks for sending your photos of the house and of Acadia. They are amazing and we are still trying to choose which we'd like to have for our collection! Thanks and hope you we can host you again in the future!

Everything we could have hoped for and more!

  • 5 of 5

Light, bright and absolutely beautiful! and perfectly maintained. We loved the location on the water and in town on a quiet street. The Bird's Nest had everything we needed (an incredibly well-equipped kitchen) and was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. An added plus were the owners who have a B & B next door so we were treated to muffins and delicious baked goods. They are also very well informed about everything to do and see in Bar Harbor and environs so we had the advantage of their expertise about the area. They even supplied us with scarves, hats and gloves when we took a whale watching excursion. We plan to make the Bird's Nest Cottage our nesting place whenever we vacation in Bar Harbor.

Beautiful House and People

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in the Bird's Nest. Lisabeth, the manager, was so attentive informative and sweet to boot. The house was very comfortable and clean. A quick walk to town on the Shorepath or by the street let us really feel at home in lovely Bar Harbor. We spent our days in the park and our evenings in town or in the house. Great space!

Peaceful Bar Harbor Retreat

  • 4 of 5

At the end of a beautiful tree-lined road, our family of four, including two teenagers, loved our 5 day stay in Bar Harbor at the Bird's Nest Cottage. The location is truly perfect, with easy walking access to the harbor, the town, and the free Island Explorer bus system. Roberta and Lisabeth made sure we were comfortable and spoiled, and even surprised us with some amazing home baked goodies from the Shore Path Cottage B&B in the main house next door. The tranquil location in busy summer Bar Harbor was a welcome retreat.

The cottage was well equipped, and the beds were very comfortable. The washer and dryer were new and efficient and came in very handy. I hadn't paid much attention to the description of the property, but it's worth noting there isn't a dishwasher. We prepared several meals at the cottage, and it was not a problem.

Highlights of our trip included: rock climbing in Acadia, Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard (expect a line), Lulu's lobster boat, AcadiaImprov (a short walk from the cottage), reclining on the lawn adjacent to the cottage, exploring the Bar Harbor Shore Path, and whale watching. Bar Harbor restaurant recommendations from our hosts were amazing.

The property is in beautiful condition and I thoroughly recommend it.

Owner's Response: We consider ourselves fortunate to have had such a pleasant and thoughtful family in residence in our Bird's Nest Cottage. As we are new to Homeaway, we are especially grateful for the suggestions they gave us to make the cottage even more accommodating. Our next Homeaway guests will benefit from this fine tuning.

Car: not necessary

Located on the beautiful historic Shore Path Cottage you are with minutes walking distance to all Bar Harbor has to offer! Whale watching, lighthouse cruises, bike or kayak rentals, restaurants, shops are all within 5 minutes form the house! By day, the incredible world-famous Acadia National Park, an easy bike ride or a 5 minute drive away offers a range of activities for every age and inclination that includes hiking the trails, biking, boating, golfing, swimming at Sand Beach or at the many lakes, whale watching, deep sea fishing, and kayaking. Sail with a naturalist to an outlying island for a walking tour of flora, fauna and some fascinating history, meet with a park ranger for an astronomical look at the night sky, or awake before the crack of dawn, and from the pink granite of Cadillac Mountain be the first in the U.S. to watch the sunrise.

You may choose to experience Mt. Desert Island by car (or from the window of the park's convenient, and ecologically mindful, shuttle buses) on the 19 mile loop road. Either way, you will want to stop and take photos beside a legend or a scenic overlook. From any perspective on land or sea, the majesty and the intimacy of this park will inspire you to stand in awe, as well as to enter into it.

Bar Harbor, as well as the other towns on and near the island, has excellent restaurants, shops, concerts, museums and interesting seasonal events, such as music, art and film festivals. Mt. Desert Island and the area referred to as 'Downeast' – where the trees outnumber the people and the night sky is brighter with stars than city lights – has become famous for its clean air, clean water and its natural beauty. It has been preserved and protected by all those who have treasured this area for generations, both those who make their home here, and those who return year after year.

Bar Harbor abounds in art galleries, antique stores and craft shows, as well as musical events and theatre presentations, all within easy proximity. The Jessup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor as well as the other libraries on this island features many well-known interesting speakers throughout the season. Whichever activities you choose, we will point you in the right direction to make your stay at the Bird's nest Cottage truly enjoyable and memorable.
