About Inder or Jane Cheema

We are Jane and Inder Cheema. Retired from ExxonMobil in 2000, which is when we established permanent residency on Southport in a home that we have had since 1978. We both immigrated to the US, Jane from Canada, and Inder from Kashmir, India, so Southport is special to was our anchor during the many years of living and working overseas, and is now a summer base for children and grandchildren, and our year round home.

Inder or Jane Cheema purchased this house in 2000

Why Inder or Jane Cheema chose Maine

Close to our home on Southport; sounded like a good retirement project, which it was and continues to be.

What makes this house unique

Away from the hustle and bustle of Boothbay Harbor, but close enough for convenient access if and when desired. Dock at property provides safe boating within protected Decker's cove, but also convenient access to a variety of adjoining interior and open ocean waterways.

This is a lovely place. The property worked out really well for us because the multi family setup was ideal. We used the kayaks and The town is nearby and adorable. Beautiful yard and everything you need. We found it to be a great value and would recommend to friends.

Relaxing and enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 had an amazing time and a wonderful vacation at the Coveside House! The apartments allowed for plenty of options and were all very comfortable and nicely decorated. The main house provided a nice dining room area for all of us to eat together. The dock with the kayaks was great for our teens. We rented a couple of more from a local kayak company who dropped off and picked them up. The teens really enjoyed being able to go out and kayak around the area. The grounds are beautifully kept and it was great to have the 2 gas grills. It was also convenient having the restaurant Robinson's Wharf a short walk from the house. They will steam your lobsters for 50 cents. There is some road noise since the house is located on the main island road but it didn't bother us. There is no dishwasher or air conditioning (there are portable fans though) but again this was not a problem during our stay. Cable TV was available but the TVs were old school 21 inch screens. The home was well equipped with soap, toilet paper, tissues, laundry detergent, dish soap and shampoo. The internet worked well although was a little spotty the further away you were from the router. Southport Island is very hilly which was a little challenging for walking and biking. The house is very conveniently located to all of the area attractions. We enjoyed the hiking trails, shopping in Boothbay, visiting the Boothbay Brewery, whale watching tour, the local beach, the Alpaca farm and much more.

Our family of fourteen had a delightful stay in Inder's Southport home. The separate apartments gave two couples with babies some quiet space. The large dinner table made the well appointed kitchen in the largest apartment a center of family time. We also enjoyed the grill and picnic tables. We kayaked, went to the Aquarium, the Botanical Gardens, a local beach and Knickerbocker Lake. But mostly we were content to enjoy the house and yard. Highly recommended.

Perfect for family reunions

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place for a family reunion. One of the apartments is all on the first floor, so good for grandparents. Lots of room. Kitchens are well equipped. However, there is no dishwasher. The owners were very helpful - even brought over wood for the fire pit in the back. The kayaks are in good shape - the dock is across the street, but easily accessible. We rented a couple more kayaks from the company in Boothbay Harbor, so that more people could go at once. There is no dinghy. The house is quite close to the road, and cars are moving pretty quickly. But overall, it is a great base to explore the area.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. We were a group of 15 (four families) and this was the perfect spot. It had 4 nice apartments each with its own kitchen and living room. Six bedrooms in all and 6 bathrooms which gave us plenty of room. We all enjoyed the main kitchen and living room to gather. Every kitchen was nicely equipped and there was nothing we did not have to cook full meals or snacks. The yard is beautifully and the two grills and picnic tables were useful. The kids loved playing in the yard and kayaking off the dock. Only disappointment was there was no rowboat as indicated. Plenty of life jackets provided. The owner was very helpful and pleasant to work with. The location was great-far enough away from crowds in town but convenient enough to get there. We would come back in a heartbeat.

Perfect reunion location for 4 families. Each had their own "apartments" but we met centrally at the

main house for breakfast, dinner. Lot's of space for all. Kayaks were very nice. Inder was a great host.

Everything was as advertised. Weather was fine and on the rainy day we headed up to Rockland to

an art museum. We also recommend the Boothbay Botanical Garden. Well worth the time. Would be nice

to have a larger TV in the main house to view family photos, videos etc.

Southport is an island about 6 miles long and 2 miles across at its widest. Access is by means of a swing bridge which opens on the half hour for boat traffic. The serenity of this island setting is augmented by nearby Booth bay Harbor and its varied marine activities, restaurants, art galleries, shops, antique stores, live theater, movie theater, aquarium ,etc. For families with children the nearby beach at Hendricks Head is fun and picturesque.Biking enthusiasts have various possibilities on and of the island. Small boats, kayaks, and canoes can tie-up at our dock from where access to the open ocean and surrounding islands and waterways/coves is feasible and safe. There is much to be explored on the island...a quaint seaside church, the landing at Newagen and its bold ocean views, hiking trails, a historical museum, a town library, and a couple of picturesque harbors. Both formal and informal dining is within walking distance of the home.

Golf: A challenging and well maintained 18 hole golf course is within a 10 min. drive; includes golf school/academy .
