Located on 2+ acres in an exclusive community on the water you will find that UnWined offers a relaxing atmosphere in a beautiful setting on the coast of Maine. Built as a place to do just that, let go of the pressure of everyday life and UnWined.
On the back of UnWined you will find two porches, downstairs with it's classic blue ceiling and dining area and upstairs with it's wire railing and uninterrupted view of the gardens and cove. At night the stars shine brilliantly above. Step off the porch into the back yard and down the steps to the waterfront.
With windows open, enjoy the babbling brook in the woods to the left of the cottage or listen to the waves upon the rocks. Keep an eye out for our eagles, they are never far. A walk up the hill will provide you with exceptional views of the river, nearby mountains and of course the ocean.
Although UnWined is one bedroom, it sleeps as many as 6 with its pullout sleeper and the daybed in the window on the stream side of the house. The master bath includes a soaking tub with high end fixtures and the shower has an overhead as well as a hand held. Grab a book, find a chair, inside in front of the fire or out back and let go. Looking for Lobster? The ones (most of the year there are buoys) in the backyard can be bought from the local lobsterman at the Cushing Harbor, just down Pleasant Point Rd.
Grab a book, find a chair, inside or out and let go.
Gerry and I have been married for 29 years and have three kids, our primary home is in Texas. We both grew up in the northeast and have always missed the seasons, the food, and love the feel that Maine has of a place that time has stood still in many ways. We fell in love with the coast of Maine thanks to our family who lives in the midcoast year round and when we found this community and our lot, we knew we had to build a place to run away to.
Kathie Nielsen purchased this cottage in 2013
For years, we had talked of the 'ideal' area for us. We always said water was a must, mountains would be great. Our family loves American history and Maine is filled with it, from antiques to Joshua Chamberlain. And then our family moved up here and built the house of their dreams. On a trip with them, we fell in love. When we walked on our lot, we knew the cottage had to have windows on the stream side, so we could hear the waterfall and of course we had to maximize our views of the water. My dad went to camp in Maine as a boy he's now 87 and his parents sailed into Rockport Harbor to see him, we have history here. Having a husband in the maritime industry, Maine's rich Maritime history and culture was a natural fit. It is a place of dreams but the hardworking resilient Mainers keep you grounded. A place where dreams are big and memories are made.
UnWined is my original design, the original drawings are on a cocktail napkin, drawn on the night we bought the property. My vision for the cottage was a blend of old and new, we've redone many houses but this is my first venture into design from the ground up. We hope that you enjoy the cottage as much as we do, many of the items you find here are in fact 'reclaimed' or antiques.
'Smuggles'. He is the horse that sits atop UnWined, purchased at a local antique shop in Rockland. We thought we got a great deal on him, that's another story. He is actually a 'Smugglers horse' circa 1880 and is solid copper and was atop a barn in Union, Maine until he landed here.
Newel post at the base of the Stairs: Circa 1800's and found on Ebay, we had our builder retrofit it for our landing.
Flooring: Reclaimed Oak Barnwood, from the same supplier who handle 'This Old House'.
Fireplace Mantle: This too is an original, Gerry and I drove to New Hampshire, bought a beam from an architectural salvage yard and had a local carpenter create the mantle, the beam is over 200 years old.
Bathroom Door Upstairs: Yup, it's a real barn door with the original hardware that we refinished.
The Cupola light and front lights are actual brass ship lights that have been restored and retrofitted for modern use.
Gilles: Our fish on the upstairs wall, carved from a piece of Driftwood.
The sunsets are pretty spectacular and a walk up the hill regardless of the season will always cause a smile or a wistful look at the view. Keep your eyes pealed, our pair of bald eagles is never far.
We (my wife, two daughters and I) just came back from a most wonderful memorable stay at “Unwined" for our Christmas Holidays. It was the most perfect Christmas ever; black starry nights, plenty of white snow, warm fire in the fireplace, breathtaking views of the outdoors scenery and a truly great house.
The first surprise for us, as we arrived at the house close to midnight, was to wake up the next morning with a stunning view, through the double French-doors, of slowly moving coastal/inland waters and tall pine-trees right at your feet. Well worth the long drive to get there.
The neighbors, who were not even in easy view of the house, were very friendly and invited us to brunch on Christmas Day, as they traditionally do every year for the neighborhood. This was such a nice and pleasant experience. Very nice people indeed!
The house is brand new and beautifully decorated with a great lay-out. The house is fully equipped with good quality dinner- and cooking-ware, a large refrigerator, gas-stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer.
The place offers tranquility indoors as well as outdoors. We took many long hikes in winter wonderland during our stay. All that was needed was to dress up warm, bring a camera and step out the front door.
We fell in love with "UnWined", we felt sad leaving "UnWined" and we look forward to return to "UnWined" soon.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the cottage in June/July of 2016. The house was beautifully maintained and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It is located a good distance (prob 20-30 minute drive) from shopping, grocery, and restaurants-but we enjoyed the tranquility and privacy that the property had to offer. The views and grounds were absolutely breath-taking and the neighborhood was absolutely beautiful.
We struggled a bit to find the nearest place to grocery shop, but eventually found a Walmart that was located in Thomaston. We also bought local seafood at Jess's market In Rockland-what an awesome place! We also had several lunches out in Rockland. Of particular note in Rockland: Cafe Miranda, and the Home Kitchen Cafe were both excellent choices that I would recommend.
The cottage was equipped beautifully with all the kitchen/cooking items you could need. We cooked dinner at home every night and made wonderful use of the outdoor grill. However, there were no cooking spices in the kitchen-so you may want to bring a few of your own favorites with you.
We stayed late June/early July so the weather was still a bit cool. There was only one day where we felt it necessary to turn on the box fans. Guests should note that the cottage is not equipped with central air conditioning.
The cottage is truly a magical place to stay, and relax. We loved our visit and hope one day to return back! Thank you so much for opening up your beautiful home. It truly is a spectacular place!!!
My husband and I, and our 2 year old son, just had a much-needed getaway week at this fabulous property. The house itself is perfect - it is extremely comfortable, thoughtfully laid out and well stocked with all the kitchen/laundry necessities. Also, Kathie clearly has a great eye for interiors. The beautiful big doors leading onto the upstairs balcony were a favorite, letting in lovely late summer breezes. The garden was perfect for what we needed - ample space for a roaming toddler and comfortable chairs in which to read a good book in the sun. We made the most of the private and community docks, swimming off them multiple times. Kathie was also the perfect host.
The house is quiet and private, yet is a reasonably short drive to lots of lovely towns.
We loved every minute and would absolutely return.
This home is truly one-of-a-kind! It's beautiful, cozy, elegant, comfortable, wonderfully planned, with every detail attended to; in short, you will not likely find another house like this in mid-coast Maine! We loved it from the moment we arrived until we reluctantly had to leave a week later. The temptation is to never leave the property, it is so peaceful and deeply nestled in the natural beauty of Maine. Kathie and Gerry have created a bit of paradise and it is so generous of them to open it up. They will even connect you with a concierge service to help with rentals and general information about the area. If you can get even a few days here, you won't soon forget them! Thank you for a wonderful experience.

This was our first time renting a vacation home in Maine and from the moment we stepped foot on the property we knew it was going to be an amazing stay.
UnWined completely exceeded our expectations!
Everything from the beautiful setting with river views to the well-appointed and thoughtfully designed home provided the perfect escape from city life. The owners have taken great care to provide all of the amenities.
We rented kayaks and paddle boards from the recommended outdoor shop that delivered and picked up the equipment. We also brought our own floats and spent many lazy hours on the river.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable time at UnWined and we did not want to leave. Hope to be back again!
We rented the Unwined cottage for three weeks in late June / early July. Although the cottage is not inexpensive, it is in s superb, quiet location on a large lot overlooking the water and was also top notch in cottage quality and amenities. For example, the kitchen is just not 'equipped,' it is stocked with all high-end appliances and (gasp!) even matching dinnerware, a wide variety of specialty gadgets, and etc. The cottage itself is rather small and isn't really designed to host guests. But the space that is available for the couple occupying the cottage is plenty ample. While we had a glitch or two during our extended stay, the owner responded to emails nearly instantly, and solutions were promptly found. As our third experience with different summer cottage rentals in Maine over the last five years, this was by far the very best and is to be highly recommended. Congratulations to the owners.
The location lends itself to tranquility and peacefulness from the minute you arrive. The views and sunsets are spectacular. The house is immaculate and well equipped. This was our first visit to this part of Maine and we will definitely be returning. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and responsive. The sounds of nature surround the home and you never see or hear another vehicle. A perfect place to recharge and unwined!
We have partnered with a local concierge who can provide you with groceries for your stay, boat rentals, baby sitting services and any additional assistance you may require.

Rockport harbor known for it's quaint beauty and Camden for it's tall ships.
