The beach is five hundred feet wide at low tide. About jeff utter and sharon whittle

Sharon is a psychotherapist, Jeff is a pastor and college professor of religion. We have four wonderful children, two sons and two daughters. Originally from the Northeast, we have lived for many years in California, and we love the American west.

jeff utter and sharon whittle purchased this house in 2002

Why jeff utter and sharon whittle chose Coastal Oregon

We both feel very connected to the natural world. Sharon especially loves the sea, and Jeff loves the evergreen forest. We both need plenty of peaceful, quiet time, which this location richly affords. We love to hike the beach and the forests. The house is set well back from the main road and has few close neighbors. It is spacious and open, and allows us to entertain guests while giving everyone their private space.

A great time was had by all

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated our 50th anniversary with our children and grandchildren in August with a week long stay at Spirit of the Sea. The accommodations were roomy, the view wonderful, the weather perfect and the location very convenient for our sightseeing up and down the coast. With the big dining table there was plenty of room for meals and games. We enjoyed having the beach pretty much to ourselves for exploring and flying kites. The younger folks used the hot tub on a daily basis especially in the evening. The kitchen had everything that we needed to prepare meals, but the only drawback was the microwave which was very slow and required full power to heat anything. Jeff and Sharon were good to work with and were very responsive to our needs. If we were to do something like this again, this is where we would go.

We stayed a week with 12 family members. The house accommodated all of us very comfortably, and was great to have the basement to put all the teenage grandkids! Loved the big kitchen, that had everything we needed to cook for us all. Very well stocked. And having the nice big dining table was an added plus. Loved all the things to do, and of course we all loved the beach. Our only complaint was the filthy dirty carpet that had stains all over it. You could tell it had not been cleaned for a very long time. Laminate, tile or wood floors would be nice, and much easier to keep clean. Would definitely come back again. Over all, was a great family vacation, and I would recommend Spirit of the Sea House to anyone.

Owner's Response: We're very glad that being at our house was a good experience for you. We are surprised to get your feedback about the carpet. This is a high quality carpet which we purchased two years ago. Sharon had the carpet cleaned and scotch-garded in late June of this year. We clean it regularly--and this is the first negative feedback we have had about it. We will look into the problem of the stains. It may be that renters are not removing their shoes, as we request, before they come into the house.

I want to live there!

  • 5 of 5

Loved this home. Our family of 16 usually go camping for a week in the Stanley Basin in Idaho, but I wanted my grandkids to see the ocean so we found the Spirit of the Sea. Beautiful home, views are amazing, beach is private, all the comforts of home. The kids, all of them, are ready to go back. It was a fun filled week! Jeff & Sharon are great people to work with. Can't wait to go back!

Couldn't be any better!

  • 5 of 5

My favorite part was watching the surf and a pair of bald eagles flying back and forth, with my friends and family from that awesome hot tub! Plenty of cooking equipment, with extras of everything. And all 12 guests were very comfortable with loads of room to spread out. The owners pay attention to details, both inside and outside. Cell phone coverage was limited, so be prepared for that, but that only made the weekend more romantic and secluded feeling. No one even left the property because it felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves as far as you could see!

The house had plenty of room for our group (8 adults and 1 dog). My husband and I were the lucky couple who got the master bedroom upstairs. I would rent this place again for the view from that bedroom alone. It has large windows with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Waking up to that in the morning was the best part for me. I saw a bald eagle fly right past the window as I was drinking my morning coffee.

Everything was very clean and all the appliances worked well. The hot tub was great. The fireplace upstairs was lovely (we didn't try the one downstairs, but it looked nice). The description of the listing was accurate and the pictures captured it well.

Beach access was very close to the house. The stairs to the beach were very slippery and the last little bit was tricky (you had to jump down a few feet). The owners were kind enough to warn us about it before we got there and the people in our group were fit enough that it wasn't a problem. There were very few other people walking the beach. It felt like our own private beach.

The owners were very nice to deal with, prompt with their responses and lots of attention to detail.

We will definitely stay here again for our next Oregon Coast getaway!

Owner's Response: The bottom 10 stairs of our beach access washed out to sea in last big winter storms. The stairs are communally owned, and our neighbors have made a temporary repair. We will do a permanent repair as soon as the storm season has passed. Meanwhile, if you need easier beach access, there is a path down to the beach a few minutes south of the house.

Perfect house for large groups

  • 4 of 5

I recently stayed at Spirit of the Sea for 2 nights with a group of 14 women for a women's weekend. We found the house to be very comfortable for our large size of group. There are plenty of chairs to sit in and plenty of beds. The views are amazing, the house is spacious and kitchen accommodating for our large group to cook meals. The house sits right above the beach and the beach is very secluded, almost feeling like your own private beach. When we showed up there were only 2 rolls of toilet paper in the house for 15 women so we had to go buy more. The owners responded to my email about this promptly and informed me that their cleaners were away the day our group checked in and a different cleaning service cleaned the home. I had to ask myself why any cleaning service would fail to check the paper goods in the house? My other complaint was that the hot tub was not hot enough to use on Friday night. The owners have the hot tub cleaned in between guests and it takes a long time to heat up after new water is added. This is totally understandable but is an FYI to future guests who may want to soak on Friday night. Overall, I would highly recommend Spirit of the Sea. Jeff and Sharon are very easy to communicate with and very helpful with my questions.
