About Charlie

I was born in Chicago and came up to the U.P. with my dad to this location during the summer. My dad died in 1974 and I continued to enjoy the U.P. In 1990 I moved up with my family and built a 4000 sq. ft. house. After 2 years my wife moved back to Chicago and I stayed. I then opened the property up for guests during the summer and have done so ever since.

Charlie purchased this lodge in 1965

What makes this lodge unique

This is one of the largest privately stocked lakes( no license required) and the most secluded location in the U.P. of Michigan with most of the conveniences of home.

"Second year here...can hardly wait until 2014 stay"

What I like best about this bit of paradise is the getting away from life's hectic pace. Charlie & Dar welcome me back like family & are fantastic hosts.

I learned some new things last year. It is not far from Pictured Rocks and that makes for a great day trip. Want to try a tour of Grand Island in 2014.

After a day out, it is great to come back to peace and quiet...

Love hiking with the dogs and enjoying the beauty around. While it is hard to leave, I know I will always return to watch the sun rise over the water while enjoying a great cup of coffee!

Great Place, Beautiful Colors

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place in the U.P of Michigan that was both secluded and in the National Forest. This place is exactly what we were looking for. Fall colors going into the lodge were fantastic. The driveway is a long dirt road very assessable as long as you do not have a low profile sports car. The fishing and the weather were great. we will be back next year.

Hunters paradise

  • 4 of 5

With no other hunters for miles and a lodge with every accommodation you can think of, this was a great place to stay. The problem we had (no fault of the location) was the warm temperatures and the deer not moving. We had 40 and 50 degree days all week with no snow. We did manage to see some doe but no bucks and the 3 of us were hoping to get enough snow for some deer migration. I guess you can’t control mother nature.

Great fishing at a nice lodge

  • 5 of 5

Returning again for our 2nd year in 2017. We had a great time and enjoyed the solitude and plenty for everyone to do. We like to fish and had good luck with the northern and the large mouth bass, also caught a few crappie. Nice size large mouth bass and crappie's. The only regret of the whole trip is that we were hoping to hook into one of the muskies but no luck. Maybe next year. Charlie showed the kid's how to catch the small pan fish off the end of the dock and we used them for bait for the bigger fish. All in all a great trip and would recommend it to anyone who wants remoteness and seclusion.

what a headache

  • 2 of 5

to start out that 20 min drive to rapid river is a 40 min drive. better have a pickup or suv to go down the driveway. first couple days everyone woke up with headaches and figured out it was the propane lights causing it. place needs to be remodeled. refridgerators are old and to small to hold all your food needed to keep food in coolers. the only thing that was true was it is secluded and the view from the screened in porch was nice

Owner's Response: I am disappointed to hear that your stay at the lodge was not what you expected. I expressed concern when you stated that you were keeping your fishing boats in the water in Gladstone, which is a town that is 40 to 50 minutes away. I was concerned because you said that you were going to drive each day back and forth between Gladstone and the lodge. At this time, I asked if you knew where it was and you confirmed that you knew the distance. In my advertising, it is stated that the nearest town is 15 miles away, not 15 minutes. However, the lodge is centrally located between the larger cities. They are within an hour’s drive. I will review my website and make any necessary changes, if it is not clear. With respect to the propane lights, I am not sure what happened. I have not had problems in the past. Perhaps, one of the mantles was broken, but they are checked each Saturday. In addition, there are regular lights available in each room. I am sorry that you feel that the lodge needs to be remodeled. I am always looking for ways to improve the property. As for the refrigerators, they are propane. Propane refrigerators are smaller than electric refrigerators. The refrigerator in the kitchen is only a year old (10 cu. Ft.-60 inches tall). This can be seen in the picture of the kitchen on the website. The refrigerator in the recreation room is older, but it is quite a bit larger (15 cubic feet). It is also in good condition and can be used as a freezer. I will add another refrigerator next year to make sure I never have this complaint or issue again. Finally, during your stay, I attempted to call five different times and was only able to speak to someone twice. I always call to see how everything is going. I was never informed that you were experiencing problems. I wish that you would have let me know as soon as you experienced any issues. Again, I am sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. It is my goal to provide good service and as I stated I would have worked with you at the time of your stay to resolve any issues or problems.

Overwhelming

  • 5 of 5

Hard to describe, Never knew there was a place this secluded and private in upper michigan. Located in the middle of the Hiawatha National Forest no other people, and your own lake and boats. We had a family reunion and I was not the one to pick the place out but I will be going back next year. We had fire works and evening bonfires and did not need to worry about any neighbors. Just remember it is a long trip to town if you want milk or eggs. Driveway is dirt and 2.5 miles and 35 minutes to town. The type of seclusion we wanted. Awesome

Boondocks

  • 3 of 5

Overall nice area , secluded, but the beds need to be replaced , it could of been cleaned better with actuall cleaning products, nice beds and clean toilets , could not smell any cleaning products when we arrived , priced about 800-1000 to high to other comparable properties, I didn't mind the work that went along with keeping power up because I'm a little restless , not for the lazy at heart.

Owner's Response: I am sorry for taking so long to respond to your review, but I did not realize this was posted until today. Three of the beds were replaced this spring. However, you are right, three additional beds do need to be replaced. That will be done this Saturday between guests. I am sorry if any of the bathrooms did not meet your expecations. I am fastidious when it comes to the showers and toilets. Normally, I inspect when the cleaning people are finished. In response to your concern, I am going to try and rectify this problem by putting paper strips on the toilets after they are inspected. I have three cleaning people who come in at 10am in the morning, when previous guests leave, and work until 4pm or when the new guests check in. The cleaning people use standard cleaning supplies. In the past I have had complaints about the smell from strong cleaning supplies. Some of my guests are very sensitive or allergic to strong smells. For example, One group had to wait outside until i was able to remove the smell due to cleaning products in the lodge. I have had guests who are handicapped or suffer from lung problems, and I have to address their concerns, as well. We do take cleaning very seriously. As far as the price, I feel that I have a very unique property that you cannot find anywhere in the U.P. No fishing license is required and guests have full access to a private, stocked lake with 5 different types of boats. In addition there is a paddle boat, trolling motor and battery. I am sorry your experience was not better and feel disappointed. I have always had positive feedback in the past. I take all complaints very seriously and try to resolve them immediately. I am very glad you brought this to my attention, but I wish you would have let me know about any issues during your stay.

This is one of the most secluded spots in the upper peninsula of Michigan. We are surrounded on three sides for miles by Hiawatha National Forest. Are entire property is thick mature woods. Our private stocked lake (Northern, Muskie, Large Mouth, Crappie, Perch and other pan fish) is only available to our family and guests. We also have a 70 foot dock great for fishing from. We have a 21/2 mile private drive. Plenty of wild life (deer, bear, birds and much more.) 2 swans that make our lake there home each year. We have the Grand Isle trail which crosses our road which is a non motorized trail which goes from Lake Michigan to Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks in Munising and Little Bay De Noc on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are all must see attractions within less then 1 hour. We also have 4 casinos and 4 golf courses within a 1 hour drive. If you want seclusion and privacy where no one will bother you. This is the place.
