A 1926 guest cottage....Old Florida!! Located in Hudson Bayou, a walking neighborhood of lovely restored old homes mixed with new, close to Selby Botanical Gardens, the Downtown Bayfront, restaurants, shopping, grocery. Six blocks to Southside Village, 1 mile to Main St., 3 miles to St. Armands Circle & Lido Beach, 8 minutes to Siesta Beach. I walk my kayak 4 blocks to a public put in on the bayou. About 6 blocks to another public access to sit and view the Bay at Sunset! There’s so much to do!…….my favorite is a sunset picnic on the beach!
The Cottage is surrounded by tropical gardens. The entrance is up stone steps to the side terrace . The first floor has a large kitchen, dining area, living area, the tile bathroom, and stairs to the 2nd floor.
Upstairs is a large bedroom with a queen bed and a side room for reading & relaxing on the antique child's four poster. The sides of this room have built in drawers that go under the eves. Two closets in the bedroom. With windows on all sides it's like an aerie!
A washer and dryer (and clothes line!) are out the back door. (I love the built in ironing board by the kitchen!)
Between the cottage and my home (a 1926 Sears Catalog House) is a paver courtyard for al fresco dining, sitting in the sun, or having a cocktail by the fountain. Join me on my front porch one evening for wine and cheese!
I share my home with Isabella Rose, my black Lab!

Florida is a slice of paradise! Swimming with our local Masters Team, rowing my single, kayaking, gardening, being outside! I love it all!
And Florida is such a mix of people it makes for many groups of friends. I love to have dinner parties with music & good conversation! My cottage guests often join in!
Chris purchased this cottage in 2011
Old homes offer so much charm and ask for care! This is my thing, working on the two houses and the gardens. The neighborhood is full of 1920's homes that have been restored making it a pleasure to walk Isabella mornings and evenings.
Plus it's an easy destination for my large family and my friends!
Being in this area of our special town!!
Chris is a great host and we could not have been happier. We would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone visiting the Sarasota area. It is located in a charming neighborhood, close to the beautiful Selby Botanic Gardens, and an easy walk to downtown and other attractions. We will definitely be back!!
This is a cozy cottage and very convenient to getting around town.
We can’t wait to return to this charming cottage! The cottage is surrounded by lush gardens and trees;
many mornings we awoke to the sound of song birds. The cottage is very comfortable and nicely decorated. We particularly enjoyed the light and airy bedroom and sitting room on the second floor.
The location is perfect for walking and exploring a truly beautiful part of the city. Our days typically started or ended with a walk to one of the many nearby attractions. When not out exploring, we spent time relaxing on the patio, enjoying a good book or a cool evening cocktail! Chris was the perfect host. We thoroughly enjoyed beach picnics with Chris and her friends! Looking forward to a longer stay this coming winter!
My wife and I selected this property at the last minute for a quick stay primarily because of price and location. We plan to return for longer stays based on it exceeding our expectations and giving us a different perspective of Florida living. Situated on a great patio totally surrounded by beautiful plants and trees, the apartment is quite comfortable. The kitchen is equipped nicely for basic cooking, and there's a separate dining area and living room (we really didn't use because we sat outside!). The bathroom was very clean and includes a nice shower. Upstairs is a nice bedroom and separate sitting room, both with lots of storage and natural light. The steps upstairs seem a bit steep and could be difficult for people with physical challenges.
Chris was great! Very accommodating and helpful in every way. Looking forward to our next stay.
The location of Garden Cottage in the historic section of Sarasota was perfect for us.. We enjoyed being able to reach so many places of interest in just minutes. Theatres, movies, Selby Gardens, Saturday outdoor markets, beaches, restaurants, museums and shopping. We found accommodations were comfortable and clean. Best of all was the friendly, wonderful owner who responded immediately to all our questions and needs. My husband and I felt like we had made a great new friend during our stay.
I had the most delightful stay at Chris cottage! I grew up in Sarasota and this was my first extended visit since I left in 1973. While much has changed in SRQ, some of the wonderful old neighborhoods and historic architecture have been preserved, and this cottage and area are among them. If you want to have a "real Florida" experience, then stay at 1788 Bahia Vista Street.
The cottage is delightful, and very comfortable - charming old features artfully integrated with modern conveniences. Downstairs is a very very serviceable kitchen, bathroom, dining area, and sitting room. Upstairs one finds a charming bedroom and an even more charming reading room/porch. Adding to the charm on the cottage are the many interesting personal mementos of the owner - a riding saddle, championship swimming and rowing medals, vintage photos, and many, many books. What a delightful place!
Chris is a wonderful hostess. She made me feel very welcome, and was attentive to my every need while at the same time giving me complete leeway to do my own thing. She graciously invited me for drinks and hors d'ouvres one evening, and we had a very nice and friendly time.
One of the exceptional things about the cottage is its location: in a fabulous neighborhood of Sarasota, within easy walking distance of the bayfront, Burns Court, the many restaurants and shops of Main Street, and other historic neighborhoods (e.g. Laurel Park).
If you're looking for luxury beachfront or the sterile atmosphere of condos, stay elsewhere. On the other hand, if you're interested in getting an honest feel of what living in Sarasota is like, stay here.
Walk to the Bayfront & hop an evening charter to watch the sunset at Big Pass! Varied water rentals available there.
Literally everything is so close! So many wonderful restaurants! Hollywood 20 Theatre & Burns Court (independent films). Varied shopping downtown, at Southside Village, and Burns Court, all 6 blocks to 1 mile.
Museums, Mote Marine Labs (mammals), Selby Gardens, Spanish Point.
Ballet, theatre, music!
Walk the Ringling Bridge to see sunset or sunrise.
If reservation is cancelled 30 days or more from beginning date there is a full refund less vrbo charges. Within the 30 days refund will be made for all days the cottage is rented (not much of a problem during season).
