Come enjoy our like NEW cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage was built in the 1940’s and has been totally renovated/updated inside and out. The furnishings, cabinets, appliances, linens, etc. were all new just 7 season's ago and it is still very neat, CLEAN., and well maintained. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from your deck or the shore. Fishing is great right off the dock. Boating, swimming, skiing, hiking, wine tasting, and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a shared lakeside firepit. Lake Michigan is minutes away for an afternoon picnic or swim. Golfing at some of the state's finest courses is close by. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your bikes for riding on the miles of trails in the National Forest. Ideal for couples who are looking for peace and quiet, bring a good book to read while sipping on your favorite beverage in a lounge chair by the lake! If you are looking for 2 cottages in close proximity, this cottage sleeps 2 adults and The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #1 sleeps 5 adults! (See VRBO listing #236973.) Great for friends and/or families who like to vacation together but sleep/stay in different quarters. It all awaits you at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #2. We live on the property, adjacent to this cottage which is approximately 20 feet from the waters edge. Because it is so close to the lake, we provide you with a garden cart to take your belongs to the cottage, as you cannot drive to your back door. You may hear the water lapping on the break wall or on the attached boathouse wall. For some this may be a relaxing, soothing sound. For others……. Children 16 years and older welcome. We no longer have a boat for your use/rent. However, there are marinas on the lake with pontoon boats to rent.

About Deb Hulst
My family came here for summer vacations from Chicago starting in the 1930's. When I was born, we moved here. We lived here year round until I was 12 years old then we moved to GR, MI. So it went back to being a cottage for weekends and vacations. I moved back with my husband and daughter in 2000. Decided in 2009 that it was time to share this beautiful spot with others.
Deb Hulst purchased this Cottage in 1930
Why Deb Hulst chose Free Soil
My Grandparents chose this perfect location, out of the winter's cold winds, but basking in the summer breezes, set deep in the Manistee National Forest, very private, quiet and serene. So different from Chicago where they came from!
What makes this Cottage unique
Ability to be part of nature, hummingbirds are fed on the property, pileated woodpeckers also dot the forest, the peace and quiet from the city hustle and bustle.

Very nice, clean and a great view of the lake. A great place to just sit back and enjoy.
The property offers a great view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes. So glad you were able to get a pontoon boat so you could tour the lower lake as well. Happy you found relaxation and could destress from city life!!
The cabin is clean and well kept, right on the water front. The location is remote and quiet. The State Parks nearby offer a lot of outdoor activities. We had a very nice week.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay. The national forest offers many opportunities to explore nature and spend quality family time hiking, swimming, boating, mushrooming, and just enjoying the animal, tree and plant life. The lake is a great destresser too! Just the sound of the waves lapping on the breakwater calms ones nerves. Great getaway from life's cares and worries. We look forward to seeing you again!
The perfect spot to get away
We loved staying here in this very secluded quiet area right on the lake in a beautiful well kept and cozy cottage. Deb and Mark were great hosts and really care about their guests. The fishing was great and the wildlife was amazing, such a beautiful location away from it all. We really enjoyed staying here and are so relaxed now, just what a vacation should be!
We are always so glad when people enjoy the woods, lake, wild life when they stay at our cottage. That is what the national forest is all about. Of course, when you can catch a few fish, it is even better, and right from shore! Looking forward to your next visit.
