Come enjoy our like NEW cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage was built in the 1940’s and has been totally renovated/updated inside and out. The furnishings, cabinets, appliances, linens, etc. were all new just five season's ago and it is still very neat and CLEAN. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from your deck or the shore. Fishing is great right off the dock. Boating, swimming, skiing, hiking, wine tasting, and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a lakeside firepit. Lake Michigan is minutes away for an afternoon picnic or swim. Golfing at some of the state's finest courses is close by. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your bikes for riding on the miles of trails in the National Forest. Ideal for couples who are looking for peace and quiet, bring a good book to read while sipping on your favorite beverage in a lounge chair by the lake! If you are looking for 2 cottages in close proximity, this cottage sleeps 2 adults and The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #1 sleeps 5 adults! (See VRBO listing #236973.) Great for friends and/or families who like to vacation together but sleep/stay in different quarters. It all awaits you at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #2. We live on the property, adjacent to this cottage which is approximately 20 feet from the waters edge. Because it is so close to the lake, we provide you a garden cart to take your belongs to the cottage, as you cannot drive to your back door. You may hear the water lapping on the break wall or on the attached boathouse wall. For some this may be a relaxing, soothing sound. For others……. Children 16 years and older welcome. NEW THIS YEAR, WE HAVE A PONTOON BOAT FOR RENT! ASK DEB FOR DETAILS.

My family came here for summer vacations from Chicago starting in the 1930's. When I was born, we moved here. We lived here year round until I was 12 years old then we moved to GR, MI. So it went back to being a cottage for weekends and vacations. I moved back with my husband and daughter in 2000. Decided in 2009 that it was time to share this beautiful spot with others.
Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930
My Grandparents chose this perfect location, out of the winter's cold winds, but basking in the summer breezes, set deep in the Manistee National Forest, very private, quiet and serene. So different from Chicago where they came from!
Ability to be part of nature, hummingbirds are fed on the property, pileated woodpeckers also dot the forest, the peace and quiet from the city hustle and bustle.
We had a wonderful time. A perfect mini vacation. We LOVED the cottage! Our hosts, Deb and Mark , were so friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed staying right next to the water, listening to the waves. It was the most relaxing atmosphere, so quiet and peaceful. The best sleep we've had in a long time! Beautifully decorated in a nautical theme, the cottage was spotless, very comfortable and Deb has it perfectly furnished with absolutely everything needed for a perfect stay. First class. We enjoyed cooking on the gas grill, sitting by the water watching boats and birds , an afternoon on the beautiful pontoon boat to the dunes, fishing, walking their beautiful wooded property and gorgeous sunsets every night. We look forward to staying there again. Tom and Anita
This was our second stay at the cabin. As before, Deb and her husband were welcoming and helpful. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed lazy mornings at the cabin, afternoons hiking/at the beach and evenings with a bonfire. The location is beautiful. Our only comment is that none of our 5 devices were able to use the wi-fi. It didn't bother us but may be a problem for those who need access while on vacation. We hope to come again!
So clean and neat along with QUIET! We loved the accommodations and the fact that we were able to rent their pontoon boat for the day. Owners were fantastic with making sure we had everything. Had a great, relaxing trip with lots of hiking!
Oh my gosh.....just what the DR ordered! This was the perfect answer to getting away from the chaos of the city and busy work life. A drive down a tree lined road...away from all our cares...into the woods...and alas we see the lake. Adorably decorated and super clean cottage sits right next to the lake. Comfortable bed, kind and friendly owners, wildlife (deer, all kinds of birds) grill...if you're looking for an escape..this is it...great breeze off the lake ....little to no need for the air conditioner to be running. This is not the place for the high-maintenance types but it's perfect for those wishing to get away that can enjoy the beauty of the great North.
This cottage has amazing views, not only of the lake, but the woods as well (during our week stay we saw well over 30 deer and a dozen turkey). We had a chance to see fireworks on the first night. The cottage was very nice, fairly new construction, and pretty large for a one bedroom cottage. The kitchen had just about everything you could want to cook with, and the cottage had a grill on the porch.
That being said, we really wanted to give this a 5 star review, BUT, we are seasoned travelers, and we expect a lot for our money, and here a few items that we felt came up short. One, the bed is lumpy and hard. I've slept on worse, but it was a bit uncomfortable. Two, the AC is a small window unit in the only window in the bedroom. Most of the nights, this was not a problem, but there were a few sticky days, and the unit did not cool off the rest of the cottage. And vice versa, when it was cooler, it would have been nice just to sleep with the window open, but that was the only window. Three, the wifi was piggy backed on the property managers connection. It was a poor connection (even after we realized we were on the other rental's network and connected to the right one ). For most people, this probably isn't an issue for this setting. Unfortunately, my companion needed to work from her laptop, and she didn't get much done. Deb was very accommodating when we needed something, and very quick to respond when we did ask for something.
We needed a little get away for the two of us and two grandchildren. We found this cottage online as we had stayed on this part of the lake many years ago with our now grown sons - and were thankful for the memories then and the new ones that were created. We found this cottage extremely clean and pleasant - just right for us - with fantastic fishing - views of the lake - campfire ring with supplied wood for cooking those hot dogs and smores. Our hosts were very accommodating - and a joy to relate with - even showing us the good fishing spot...for great bass and bluegill. Thanks so much. Reservations and communication was easy by e mail - and directions were very clear. This is a fantastic out of the way place - very quiet and peaceful.
