About Deb Hulst
My family came here for summer vacations from Chicago starting in the 1930's. When I was born, we moved here. We lived here year round until I was 12 years old then we moved to GR, MI. So it went back to being a cottage for weekends and vacations. I moved back with my husband and daughter in 2000. Decided in 2009 that it was time to share this beautiful spot with others.
Deb Hulst purchased this Cottage in 1930
Why Deb Hulst chose Free Soil
My Grandparents chose this perfect location, out of the winter's cold winds, but basking in the summer breezes, set deep in the Manistee National Forest, very private, quiet and serene. So different from Chicago where they came from!
What makes this Cottage unique
Ability to be part of nature, hummingbirds are fed on the property, pileated woodpeckers also dot the forest, the peace and quiet from the city hustle and bustle.

Escape from the City
Property was very clean and the owners were very easy to deal with and communicated well through the booking process and the stay. Property provided a private and relaxing experience. Views of the lake from the swing and fire pit were amazing.
October Anniversary Weekend Stay
Even though the weather did not cooperate, rainy, windy and cold we had a wonderful time in the cottage. This cottage is so cozy, clean and so quaint. The cottage was decorated really cute also. Deb Hulst the owner was nice and very helpful. She held the umbrella over us so we could bring our stuff to the cottage. She made sure that we were well taken care of. We found things to do despite the weather. We would definitely go back to this cottage again
wonderful lakeside location!
The cottage located on the beautiful lake was perfect. And conveniently located near Lake Michigan.
We enjoyed the peace and tranquility sitting by the lake, watching the sun set, and the view surrounding us. A very relaxing place to be. Mark greeted us and gave us a quick rundown of everything. Deb was readily available when I messaged her. Very nice people! Definitely a place to relax and refresh!!
Beautiful - Wonderful Experience!
I can't say enough about much we enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The cottage is very clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed. The property is beautiful and also very well-maintained. It is off the beaten track which makes for a very peaceful and serene setting. Deb and Mark were very helpful and welcoming. The hiking in the area was excellent - it was difficult to decide whether to stay and enjoy the cottage and lake or leave to take advantage of all that the area has to offer. We are looking forward to another stay!
The cottage is 20 miles from Ludington which is approximately 25 minutes from the cottage. Many of the above activities are located in or around Ludington but are not 15 minutes away as the description requires.,
