Home featured in NY Times. A 1400's barn from Kent county, England, was used for the great room of this house that is near three ski areas -- Butternut, Catamount and Jiminy Peak. The house is a spacious four thousand square feet with two fireplaces, three sitting rooms, five comfortable bedrooms and six bathrooms. The house is located on a hill away from the center of South Egremont; yet only minutes from the heart of this historic town.
The house is located on a beautiful hill and yet is close to the very center of historic South Egremont, Massachusetts in the historic southern Berkshires. It is less than 2-and-a-half hours from New York City. 4-wheel drive highly recommended in winter. A short drive to historic Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Lenox for Tanglewood, museums, antiquing, hiking, skiing and historic sight seeing.
We bought the property in 1974 as an escape from New York, NY where I worked as a network television producer, my husband an editor/reporter for Forbes magazine. I'm originally from the Midwest, got into journalism when I founded the Michigan Daily, the student run newspaper at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where I was a chem major. Met my husband at United Press International. He went on to Forbes magazine, I went to NBC-TV News.
Owner/Manager purchased this estate in 1974
Tucked away on a private mountain road, this luxurious, spacious mountain hideaway has room for your friends, family and pets. Gated In-ground Pool with diving board on the deep end, stairs going into the pool on the Shallow End.Kids and Dogs love to jump in and climb out.
Spacious and luxurious inside and out, yet minutes from the heart of South Egremont, MA, a pre-Revolutionary town where -- unforgettably -- the old and new come together. To Berkshire natives, the area of Western Massachusetts recalls memories of childhood vacations in the grandeur of its majestic green hills, of swimming in mysterious hidden lakes that dot the state and of family lunches and dinners at favorite restaurants on its country roads. To us the Berkshires have always been alive with music by the Boston Symphony orchestra at Tanglewood in Lenox, and rich in the famous folksy paintings in the fabulous collection at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Today, new memories are being born with innovative attractions that co-exist and blend with the natural beauty of the area....a rope adventure course in a forestry site where you'll be suspended on safety lines between the earth and the forest canopy as you scramble along any one of eight aerial trails of varying difficulty....new Berkshire restaurants like Brava, a wine and tapas bar in Lenox and Moe's Tavern in Lee where craft beer and American whiskey lovers mingle, and an old standby, Bagels Too in Pittsfield, has some of the country's best bagels outside of New York...In Arrowhead, take a tour of the 18th century home of Herman Melville where he completed Moby Dick. Then, on to the Old Creamery Co-Op in Cummington to pick up sandwiches and head to Savoy Mountain State Forest in Florida, MA for a swim in one of the crystalline ponds, followed by your picnic lunch.
This house is set in the Berkshires Hills, seemingly away from everything but parallel to downtown historic South Egremont, Mass, by a few minutes. The house has many places to just sit, read a book. Fireplaces in at least two rooms, including the great room shaped by a 1400's barn from Kent, England. Great hiking just outside the door. And a swimming pool, safely fenced in so that no one gets lost.. It was an ideal and beautful getaway!
The house was spacious- the great room was spectacular with plenty of seating for our large group. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and look forward to returning, hopefully in the summer so we can enjoy the in ground pool.
We cannot say enough good things about our stay; the house was spacious, eclectic and very well equipped to handle our large group! From top to bottom the property was just perfect for our family gathering; with a stocked kitchen, 5 large bedrooms (several with en suites), and a great open concept living space, we were able to cook meals consistently throughout our stay without ever feeling cramped, slept well, ate together and there was never a wait for a bathroom! The property itself was incredible; we setup a volleyball net, enjoyed the pool and took advantage of the great BBQ! The cute town of Great Barrington is a short drive away and fun to explore; we plan on renting this house annually and will definitely take advantage of the nearby lakes and scenic sites next year - this time we had plenty of fun just hanging around the house. Thanks to the Stern's for being such lovely hosts - we had a few questions upon arrival that were answered promptly and we always felt like we had someone to call on should any additional questions arise. Plenty of linens and the house was in great condition for our family. It was a bit hot when we first arrived but most of the bedrooms had air conditioners and it cooled off at night so that wasn't too much of an issue; the entire house isn't air conditioned but the pool was perfect for cooling off. Thank you again - we'll see you next year!
My family has stayed at this house a number of times and look forward to returning every time we leave. The house is gorgeous and spacious, and the property has character and views. You can basically get lost in the great room, itself a house constructed with charming antique British barn framing within it, and hold a huge dinner around the massive table or bring your whole family around the large fireplace. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped with an entertaining bar and wet sink as well as all the other common appliances. The bedrooms are large and house a lot of people and the beds are really comfortable and arranged with enough variety for any family. The yard is fully enclosed and the pool is a wonderful treat on top of it all, large enough for a large family. We love staying at this Berkshire house!
This house is great for a group of friends or relatives because it has a gorgeous large room made out of a barn, and also smaller nooks and spaces with sofas and lamps for quiet reading and conversation, Internet browsing and movie watching. It is tucked back on a quiet dirt road loop where you can take safe walks with children and dogs, while being accessible to the cultural sites the Berkshires are famous for. My extended family is planning another visit later this year.
Dealing with the owners was a pleasure, and everything was neat and clean. The open kitchen area is great for several people cooking together. They have been very generous in leaving available their many art works in this beautifully decorated comfy home.
A wonderful experience! Our large group of several families love love love the house! Its the kind of unique setting in its beautiful architecture and yet really truly a home. The house was clean, there was more than ample room for cooking and entertaining or finding a place for some alone time. We swam in the beautiful pool, we talked down by the pond, we hiked through the woods and saw deer, a fox and lots and lots of bunnies. A magical place we hope to come year after year!
Looking for a retreat in the Berkshires, this roomy, five bedroom, five bath, spotlessly clean house in South Egremont is the hard to find combination of both beautiful and comfortable. With a good-sized swimming pool, a wonderful tree-filled view and a tranquil setting, it’s perfect for a weekend or longer stay with lots of room for a group without being on each other’s necks. Modern furniture for comfort and antique decorations for charm, we are definitely planning to return in the fall to see the leaves turn.
South Egremont is a pre-Revolutional country town, in a sophisticated but understated region of eastern U-S. Winding roads, Appalachian hiking trails, streams and river coursing through fields where horses, goats and cows graze. Every other person you meet who grew up and still lives in the Berkshires likes to tell you how as a kid they posed for Norman Rockwell. Jasper Johns is among the greatest living painters these days and lives nearby.
