We are creative, entrepreneurial, serial-renovator types who are happy and proud to call NYC our home for more than half of our lives. We live for great design and ease of living, and so have designed our place as such — to be easy, convenient, relaxing, and as country-like as possible in a city of eight million people.
The East Village is one of the last places in NYC that, while it is certainly different than it was 20 years ago, still retains the wonderful charm and individuality that many 'real neighborhoods' have lost through new building in the city in recent years.
Our place is well thought out and you feel it immediately. Because we designed it ourselves, our place has perks like higher sinks and surround sound that includes the bathroom so you can soak in the tub to classical music or hear what's happening during a movie if you get up and run to the kitchen. Everything here is here for a good reason and we feel it makes life so much more fun and easy.
It is also highly unusual to have not only a washer/dryer and dishwasher but a virtual farm on the roof! The satisfaction of growing and eating your own vegetables is wonderful and makes our place truly unique.
We absolutely adored our stay in this apartment! Kristin was the most amazing host, replying to all of our messages and even leaving a handy guide to the apartment and area to make sure our stay went smoothly! The apartment itself is light, airy, clean and has a wonderful homely feel about it. And we have no words for the roof - a little oasis in the heart of NY. Can't speak highly enough about our stay, we would come back again in a heartbeat!
Kristens apartment was absolutely perfect for us, we stayed there for 7 days, great location, very comfotable and fully equipped for all your needs. The roof garden was our own little oasis, great space with wonderful produce grown on the rooftop.
It made our first week in New York an absolute joy, we have loved the people and the city, thank you Kristen for sharing your apartment with us, I will be highly recommending it to everyone I know heading up this way.

We had a wonderful time staying in this beautiful, spotless, well-appointed apartment. The roof top garden is an oasis with fragrant herbs and flowers. The pictures don't do it justice! Even though our flight got in 4 hours late, Kristin had the apartment all ready for us -air conditioning blasting away against the 95 degree heat with 100 % humidity, but we quickly cooled off in the "spa like" shower. We then walked around the corner for the best cold borscht I have ever tasted at Veselkas - a fabulous Ukrainian restaurant open 24 hours! We had a fascinating time exploring the East Village...the Mast bookstore...the old CBGB's site, Search and Destroy ...too fun!
We will definitely be back!
This apartment is a real gem! Kristin is a joy to communicate and to work with. She and Gadge were so kind, and they truly go above and beyond to help their guests have a true New York experience!
A few highlights:
**The washer & dryer were convenient to have (so pack light!)
**The kitchen is a dream, FULLY STOCKED! We enjoyed cooking eggs & making coffee in the morning, so much so that we never ate breakfast out. The full sized refrigerator/freezer was great to bring leftovers home and keep wine & water cold.
**The 1st Ave subway station is at the corner of 1st Ave & 14th, a one block walk to the L train; SO HANDY to hop on the subway 2 minutes after walking out of your front door.
**The bed is EXTREMELY comfortable. I literally slept better than I do at home!
**Toiletries - Kristin is so sweet to provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion.
**The rooftop is a true oasis in the midst of the bustle of city life! We enjoyed going up and watering their plants, sitting at the outdoor dining table, watching all the activity below, and ESPECIALLY watching the Macy's fireworks on July 4th, wow! What an experience & lasting memory! Crowds poured through the neighborhood toward the East River all afternoon & evening, vying for their position, and we got to watch it all from this quiet, peaceful rooftop where we had wine and snacks for dinner.
**Buy a Metro Card as soon as you arrive, and download the MTA Planner app or bookmark the MTA's tripplanner site to help you until you learn the subway system.
**Remove your shoes as soon as you get "home" because NYC streets are dirty. Even if you're not already in this habit, you'll want to do this.
**There is a fruit stand directly across the street, we stopped there every other day; much lower prices than in stores & very good quality.
**Be aware that you're sharing living space with people below you; we learned to walk & talk softer than we usually do (but we are big, loud Texans).
**Pack light because you'll be walking it upstairs. Besides, you don't need much!
**Read & follow their printed guidelines/instructions for using the apartment and exploring their neighborhood. They know what they're talking about, and we wanted to respect their wishes regarding caring for their home because it is such a nice place and they're beautiful people.
We can't wait to go back! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home, Kristin & Gadge!
New York City can be pretty overwhelming at times and this lovely place was our own personal oasis. A great spot to return to...or to sleep late in...and decompress from the over-stimulation of the big city. What appears to be a small space is so well-thought out that it feels like a big house. The office space, 'living room' with great TV for watching the news at the end of the night, the beautiful kitchen complete with anything and everything you might want, the luxurious bathroom and deep tub...amazing amenities for this price. The rooftop deck and garden were the highlight for us during a very hot week in New York. The rooftop was cool at night and in the morning...perfect for yoga stretching at dawn and a glass of wine at dusk. Kristin's eye (she's a professional designer!) is excellent and I am stealing some ideas for our own house. Bed is super comfortable; sound system is great. If you are planning on baking a cake (it was our daughter's birthday), be warned there is no oven..but a pretty great stovetop. With so many excellent bakeries and grocery stores right outside your door, it's no problem. Who wants to be baking in NYC anyway? ;-) Kristin is professional and organized and that made the rental such a breeze. Our highest recommendation.
The apartment was exactly as advertised. Very bright and airy. Very nicely furnished and appointed.
The murphy bed was quite easy to open and close and was very comfortable.
We loved the rooftop terrace.
On a couple of nights, when we were feeling tired after a hard day's sightseeing, we picked up some chicken from the place downstairs
and enjoyed it on the rooftop with some wine.
There are tons of great restaurants in the neighborhood. We particularly enjoyed Thai Terminal on 12th St.
Kristin and Gadge were great hosts and went out of their way to accommodate us after arriving on a red eye from Los Angeles.
