Birmingham Estate Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 8. Craftsman House. Fish-swim-cycle-hike-golf, Even Get Married!

This exceptionally quiet and private gated estate adjoins your own 40-acre fishing, canoeing, wildlife habitat and duck roost. There is a cascading stream of several small waterfalls. We have a horse riding ring (bring your own horses). There is a medium size soccer field (110 X 70 yards). There are great walking trails and open fields. You can hike or ride horses or mountain bikes on some adjoining lands for hours. Picnic by the edge of the lake or atop one of the grandest ridges in Central Alabama.

Ducky Swamp Farm is four minutes from the renowned Shoal Creek Golf Club, site of two PGA Majors and the annual Regions Tradition Seniors Masters tournament held every early June. Tee times at Shoal Creek can be arranged with advance planning.

Also nearby are the two fabulous Greystone Club Courses.

Just 25 minutes down 280 is the world-renowned Farmlinks golf course. A charter member of the Southern Living Hotel Collection and home of the number-one public golf course in Alabama and ranked among Golf Digest top national golf resorts, this pristine, 3,500-acre destination is located at Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, Alabama.

We are just ten miles from the amazing Barber Motorsports Park and Museum. This ten-year-old racetrack holds the 2014 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama April 25-27. The track has hosted numerous motorsport races including Grand-Am, Vintage Racing Series events, and AMA Superbike. It serves as the home of the 'Porsche Driving Experience' and the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School. The museum has over 1200 vintage and modern motorcycles and racing cars. It is considered the largest motorcycle museum in the world, as well as the largest collection of Lotus race cars. The motorcycle collection includes bikes dating from 1904 to present production. About half of the 1200 motorcycles are on display at any given time. The entire Barber Motorsports property is an awesome sight to behold and is proclaimed the greatest race track in the world by many champion drivers and motorcycle racers.

Make this master-crafted house and lands your own resort. Even if you just like to walk around in natural surroundings your visit to DSF will be a truly rewarding time for you and your friends and family. With room in the house for up to 12 guests nightly, there is room to roam around the farm lake and trails to find the beautiful solitude you have been missing in your hectic life.

Fishing, boating, mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, enjoying the very quiet and private surrounds just a 20 minute drive to Birmingham! The beautiful 40-acre private fishing lake has canoes and paddle boats for your use! Bring your rods and reels for fine fishing. This lake is a Duck Refuge. In winter hundreds of ducks roost here. There are year-round Wood Ducks and Oct-Feb migrating ducks roosting here. I watch hundreds of Mallards, Woodies and Ringnecks coming in to roost every evening in late fall and winter. Spectacular.

About Sid Smyer

I am a lover of people and nature, especially people in nature exploring their deeper nature! I am the father of four daughters whom I always encourage to 'Put down the i-pad and GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY'.

I make architectural precast-concrete products and a building system called Castle One. I have designed several and built many houses. The Ducky Swamp Farmhouse is a house I designed and built from oak, poplar, pine and other trees that were felled by Hurricane Opal as it swept across Alabama back in 1995. The work was mostly done by me and my assistant, Larry, off and on from 1998 to 2012. Now it is ready to share with you.

I am a graduate of The University of Virginia and I remember all the best parties if not all my economics classes. I continue to learn and am committed to conservation and environmental restoration efforts.

I am also involved in the sustainable building industry and committed to designing solar and photo-voltaic elements into all our future projects.

My company is working to develop the Castle One sustainable house projects in the urban revitalization districts in Birmingham, Buffalo NY and in New Jersey.

Sid Smyer purchased this estate in 1985

Steven and Suzy's Wedding

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property to house the groomsmen for my son's wedding and also used it for a rehearsal dinner. The house is absolutely beautiful! There are so many unique features and it was spacious enough to house a large wedding party and families for the dinner. The owner was exceptionally accommodating to all of our needs and even stopped in to celebrate the occasion with us. Thank you, Sid!

Family Summer Vacation Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Ducky Swamp Farm was perfect for us. We enjoyed the solitude all the property and private lake had to offer. The house is very unique and the owner took a lot of pride in building it. It’s very private yet not too far from town. The home has everything you need. Sid the owner is very helpful and makes himself available should any issues arise. We visited with him on a few occasions and had a great time. Although it was fairly warm my son caught several fish and the big porch on the cabin was always a cool spot to hang out and relax. If you like peace and quiet than this is your place. Thanks for everything Sid!!!

Owner's Response: Dear Pink Floyd, I'd be Pink Sid if I spent half my life out in the Gulf of Mexico. Thank you for the great review of "Ducky". I really enjoyed sitting on the porch and talking with you, A.. and P.. . Y'all are GOOD company! I hope I can make it to Cajun-land soon and see the real swamps and marshes. And gaze at that one stoplight! Yours truly, Sid

Terrific Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic spot to enjoy some family time! While you are just outside Birmingham for convenience, you feel you are out in the woods with lots of space all to yourself. We enjoyed fishing & boating/canoeing on your own private lake, played badminton, road bikes and just chillin at the house or on the lake.

The sounds of the cicada's and frogs at night sitting on the front porch were magical. We enjoyed other wildlife like beautiful birds and even a snapping turtle. The horses visited us most mornings too.

The house has a lot of space and large areas to congregate for games, movies and just enjoying.

Sid is a most gracious host ensuring we were all set throughout the week. He has quite a history in the area and simply enjoyable to talk with and get assistance.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a private place with fishing for my husband and our three boys, Ducky Swamp was perfect. The fishing was great, the property is secluded but not far from town. Mr. Sid was a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed. His home is beautiful, plenty of room for all of us to rest and relax. We will definitely go back, we loved meeting Mr. Sid and his dog Buster , it was a perfect getaway!

Owner's Response: Thank you Estelle, a true Louisiana belle! I am so glad that Wes and the boys caught lots of fish and some pretty nice bass! I loved it when I caught the smell of your pies baking when I visited! That's what makes it such a joy to me: when my guests make "Ducky" their home, enjoying the peace and beauty and adding their soul and love to it. And the icing on the cake is their kind reviews and fun quips! And Thanks Estelle for leaving me some of your great chocolaty granola squares in the fridge! Sid

Wonderful Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I came to celebrate my brother's graduation from college and had an amazing time! The house and property were beautiful. Our dogs had so much fun running around by the lake and exploring. From fishing, grilling out, and makes s'mores in the fire pit - there was so much to do. Sid was a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed.

Everything I had dreamed of, and then some!

  • 5 of 5

When looking for a vacation spot, my goals were to find a secluded place with a lake that I could bring my dogs and allow them to play off leash. Ducky's Swamp Farm was the perfect choice. It has all of the amenities of a hotel in the city (comfy beds, cable, and wifi) and is located within a 10-15 minute drive of several restaurants (we drove by several sit down restaurants and 2 Chick-fil-a) and major stores (Lowes, Super Walmart).. Better yet, there is a full kitchen (range/oven, toaster oven, microwave, and large french door refrigerator) and laundry room. The home has all of the luxuries for guests not interested in being "in the woods" with a private lake and plenty of woods to explore for guests looking to spend some time with nature.

The lake is amazing and there are boats and canoes available to use. For the boats, bring an outboard motor and plug for optimal enjoyment. Paddling around the lake in the canoe to see the beaver hut and dam was a lot of fun! There is a fire pit next to the lake to enjoy and great fishing fun.

It rained heavily the day we arrived and a couple of evenings during our stay, but it did not diminish our enjoyment one bit. The biggest hassle was having to bathe the dogs multiple times a day before letting them back in the house because it was muddy and they were having so much fun swimming and romping around in the mud for us to stop them. If you bring pets, I highly encourage you to bring plenty of blankets/sheets to cover the sofas to help keep them clean. It relieved a great deal of stress not to have to worry about the dogs leaving hair or dirt on the beautiful furniture. Also, bring your dog beds because your dogs will be EXHAUSTED from all of the exercise. I didn't think my aging, hyper dog was capable of being worn out until this vacation.

The owner, Sid, built the house himself and the love and craftsmanship definitely shows. Sid made himself available to us and even accepted our invitation to join us for dinner one night.

Thank you, Sid, for the best vacation. I can't wait till our next visit.
