This little cottage at the head of MDI is a great starting point for all activities on your to do list. It has two queen size bedrooms, two baths, and two sitting rooms making it great for two couples, with one couple on the first floor and another on the second floor.
For a family with children, one sitting room turns into a double size bedroom. There's also a dining area and an efficient galley style kitchen. All necessary kitchen equipment is readily available. Towels and linens are provided. Games are available and a nice sound system. The house has Cable to provide television and internet.
There are no neighbors but there is a little general store within walking distance if you need milk, etc. or a quick take-out lunch. There are also kayaks to rent at the nearby KOA campground. Travel back over the bridge just a hop and a skip for the best steamed lobster you may ever eat. They have picnic tables and also serve delicious chowder, steamed clams, or lobster sandwiches.
Travel a mile south on Rt.102/198 and you'll find Mother's Kitchen who will pack you a wonderful bag lunch to take on your hike or beach trip. You can call ahead (288-4403) and pick up your lunch on the way.
Most people come here to visit Bar Harbor, the best known town on MDI. But there are also three other villages here, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Tremont. Aaron's Place is a great starting point to these places as well as to Bar Harbor.
If you are looking for a winter getaway, Aaron's Place is still a great starting place although many places mentioned above may be shut for the season.
We had a great time at this house. There were four of us, two adults and two kids and we had plenty of space. House is conveniently located and had everything we needed and more. It is well maintained and very clean. There is a fire pit in the backyard (great for roasting marshmallows) as well as a gas grill in the front yard. There are a lot of books in the house and one of the upstairs bedrooms had a lot of children's books which my son really enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised to see the house was already stocked with things like laundry detergent and dish soap. The only thing missing was a dish drain rack - other than that, we had everything we needed.
There are only two major negatives about the house while we stayed there:
1) There was some problem with the well and the water was not OK to drink, which was a little inconvenient. But hopefully they will get this fixed soon.
2) Also, the front of the house faces a road with a high speed limit - it's not noisy or super busy but made me nervous because I had a 3 year old with me, so I had to carefully supervise him to make sure he didn't get too close to the road.
We are 10 minutes to the Acadia Park entrance and about 15 minutes from in-town Bar Harbor where many attractions and activities are available. The other villages on Mount Desert Island, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Bass Harbor are 20 or 25 minutes away in the other direction. Ellsworth is only 20 minutes to the north. Our house is a great place to be in the center of things. Come spend some quiet time in a home away from home.
