Privacy at its best

We rented this beautiful home for New Year. With multiple families... we were looking for a place to have privacy and to accommodate our needs. This home had it all. We loved the fact that there were multiple master bedrooms with private bathrooms. The backyard and scenery was beautiful. The owners were very nice and respectful. The on-site manger is next door. At first I was concerned because we didn’t want to be looked after. However, the on-site manger was wonderful. He gave us our full privacy and didn’t bother us at all. Really enjoyed the stay and plan to come back again for sure!

Secluded, off-the-grid, beautiful Mountain Home w/views

This property really is something special, and they've taken great care to provide for an off-the-beaten path experience, and prepare you for what this house offers in the description. There are a few other small cabins that are located on the sprawling 55 acres, but not within view or earshot of this beautiful main house, the "Granite Vista". You have an enormous house, with amazing pillow-top beds, and a sprawling backyard and patio with a view all to yourself. We had a larger group, so we were concerned we might disturb some others with our antics and music at night - but at a reasonable level, the setting was perfect under a star-filled sky.,

There is an on-site manager that lives in an apartment above the property repair shop (which is directly next door to the main house, although not shown in the photos), but we never saw or heard from him other than when we checked in - which was wonderful. We really wanted the feel that we were alone in the mountain woods, and this spot delivered. Major bonus was being able to walk 10-15 minutes over to the training facility for some bears, tigers, and lions - and hearing their calls in the morning. (Not loud or unsettling - just a cool treat that brings a smile to your face, and one you won't find anywhere else). The trails surrounding the property are incredible, and the silence of the mountains is only broken by the birds and wind through the trees.

Bathrooms for every bedroom in this 3-story house meant all 10 of our guests, including 3 couples, were very provided for. Updated and efficient kitchen, air-conditioning, heat, and water supply. If you're wanting a cabin in the mountains without the bustle of the neighborhoods of Big Bear, this is your location.

Tips: the main house has decent Wi-Fi (about 12 Mbps on average), but no cable/satellite and NO cell service, which they mentioned (unless you have Sprint or Verizon - but we didn't, which added to the remote feel). Buy groceries at the bottom of the mountain before you come up Hwy 38, or it's a 20 minute ride into town to stock up. Also, the elevation is quite significant - so be sure to take care accordingly.

We loved our stay and would definitely recommend and return.

Huge Ranch in the Mountains -- Perfect for Kids to Play Outside

We were looking for a mountain cabin where we didn't have to leave the premises for the kids to be able to play outside and snow sled. This house was perfect for what we were looking for in that regard! Kids loved exploring the huge ranch, and we were lucky that there was still enough snow on the ground for them to play (since it is at/above 8,000 feet). The house itself was great in terms of layout and accommodations for 8 adults and 8 children. The kids loved to be able to all sleep together on the top floor! The only thing I would mention is that the house and lot definitely has deferred maintenance. The towels smelled moldy and the beds other than the master were not too comfortable. But all in all, we enjoyed our stay very much and would go back. And the owners were very attentive and nice. Thanks!

Our ranch is not your typical "vacation rental" but our family home - available only specific times of the year when we travel. I was sorry to hear that the towels were not laundered properly - we have reviewed our housekeeping procedures to make sure that does not occur again. The towels are high quality and new - being replaced recently. All of the mattresses in our home are now very comfortable pillow tops. The maintenance of our home and ranch is a continual project; however, you may be assured that everything is in working order, and if there is a problem, it is dealt with promptly. We are happy that you and your children enjoyed our ranch and home for the weekend.

About Vickie Wilson

We both grew up in Orange County, Southern California, and moved to San Bernardino in 1981. Desiring to have our sons grow up with some space around them, we purchased the ranch near Big Bear Lake in 1991 when our boys were 6, 4, 2 and 2 months old. We lived in the 500 sf cottage that is now called Ironwood Lodge - the only building on the ranch. The six of us lived in the cottage (yes, we were a bit crazy!!) while we built what is now the main house - called Granite Vista. It took us 3 years before it was completed enough for us to move in. We did the majority of building ourselves, with help from family and friends. After moving in to the 'big' house, Ironwood sat empty for a few years. With the encouragement of some friends who owned a lodge in town, we remodeled it and began renting it out. Our guests liked it so much that we built three more - Mountain Sunset, Hunter's Lodge and Wild Rose - ready for New Year's 2000. A few years later we acquired the Kopitch Cottage (built by the Kopitch family) that sat on 10 acres bordering our original 40 acres…. then a few years later we built Juniper Ridge - 2000 sf, 3 bedroom 2 bath family cabin. We recently remodeled our home to have available for large groups. Now that the boys are grown, we love to travel and spend several months every year exploring other countries on our motorcycle - BMW 1200 GS. We recently spent 5 months in Central America and 2 months in Thailand. Though we love traveling, there is no place like home!

Our ranch is only 2 hours from Los Angeles, but in an area where there are no utilities. This fact allowed us to purchase acreage at a reasonable cost. With advances in technology, solar power has become more affordable. Every cottage and home on our ranch is run on solar power! Far from utility lines, yet only 15 minutes from grocery stores, restaurants, skiing and the lake, we feel like our ranch is in an ideal location.

What makes this lodge unique

Our ranch is forested with tall pines, huge junipers, fir and lodge pole pines. To hike through the forest on the trails on and around our ranch is one of our favorite past times. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses our ranch. At an elevation of 8200, the sky is blue and the stars are amazing. The peace and quiet is so restful.

Cienaga Creek Ranch is located 2 1/2 hours from Los Angeles, in the San Bernardino National Forest. 15 minute drive time from Big Bear Lake, CA, where you may enjoy downhill skiing, lake activities, restaurants, grocery stores. Close enough to access, but far enough away from the busy tourist area.

Holidays may require a 3 -5 night minimum stay depending on dates. Rates are subject to change until reservation is confirmed. No arrivals or departures on December 25, 2016, or January 1, 2017. Caretaker onsite to maintain utilities. A valid credit card must be presented at check in for authorization of security deposit ($500.00). Check in time is anytime after 4:00 PM; check out time is by 10:00 AM. Early arrival or late departure must be arranged in advance and may include additional charges.

  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
