They weren't kidding when they said it was a 4 minute walk! It's actually more like a 7 minute walk when you're wearing ski/snow gear but without that it's a 2 minute walk. It's very convenient for when you want to go "home" during lunch and not have to deal with the shuttle at the end of the day. The weekend I went was during peak season for skiing/snow boarding so it was pricey, but between 6 people it was doable and worth it for how close it was to the slopes.
I liked how spacious the place was. There were 6 people in my party and we were all comfortable. It says that the max number of people is 7 but if you talked to management I'm sure you could fit 10 people. The layout is the loft on the top story with two full sized beds, 2 bedrooms with queen sized beds, a full sized bathroom, and entrance to the balcony from one of the bedrooms on the second floor, and the kitchen, living room, dining area, and bathroom on the bottom floor.
I checked in online by sending my photo ID and the card I paid with. This made it much easier because I arrived pretty late (traffic was bad) but the email they send you having the check in information was lacking information on parking. The "sidewalk" was covered VERY high in snow (not there fault, the whole block is like that) but they didn't have explicit signs about where to park. There was only a small sign that said max 2 cars so we didn't know if that was for our unit or not. This parking was not reserved as we left in the morning to pick up our gear and couldn't park again. This was frustrating because other condos/cabins posted signs for no parking for non-renters. It wasn't until I called asking what to do that I was informed that there was in fact parking for my unit behind the building. The road to park behind the building was a dirt road and covered with ice, which we would have liked to know about beforehand. This lack of information wasn't terribly significant in the long run, but everyone in my party was frustrated by not knowing what to do with our vehicles.
The kitchen was fully stocked with dishware, which was nice. There not an issue with water being to cold, and the ample counter space made it easy to prepare meals for several people.
We did not see any information on the condition of the fireplace. There wasn't a key to use it (it was a gas fireplace) and there was no information in the binder on it, so that was very disappointing.
As a whole, though, I would recommend and use this place again.
The Big Bear Condo, was very clean and comfortable. It is very very close to snow summit ski resort. The only things that would have make even better the stay are WiFi, clothing washer/dryer and Cable TV.
CoolCabins people were great, we contacted them a couple of times and their response and customer service was very good, specially Trish.. thanks!
The only positive thing about this unit (and reason it even gets 2 stars) is its proximity to the slopes. It's right across from the Snow Summit parking lot. Otherwise, it's a mess of a unit. It has not been updated in decades. The owner has clearly decided that its location justifies ignoring the unit itself. There is no WIFI, not even any cable or other TV reception (really??) If you didn't bring DVDs, the TV serves no purpose at all. Everything is old (think Nixon era) and falling apart - our shower door fell completely off. Heat doesn't work well Half the lights don't work. And worst of all - there is no dedicated parking, despite the rental agencies' misrepresentation that it comes with 2 parking spots. The parking spots are actually public parking spots on Summit Blvd., so the spots get filled up with skiers/snowboarders during the day. Sure enough, when we arrived, there were no spots for us. When we informed the rental agency about this, they did nothing. All in all, a miserable place to stay.
The cabin was huge but the hot water didn't work, only for one night. The DVD didn't either we had to go buy one. And it was freezing also but that didn't stop me from having a good time. It was nice and clean!
