Johnsburg House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedroom, 1.5 bath historic schoolhouse close to hiking, swimming and skiing.

A perfect secluded getaway!

The Lay of the Land: The North River Schoolhouse sleeps 7 people, ideally 1 or 2 couples with kids and an upstairs bedroom great for teens. (The house is toddler-friendly with optional safety locks.) The open floor-plan living room/dining room has both the living area plus extra-long dining table that comfortably seats 8. There is also a small banquette in the kitchen for quick bites. The house is very family-friendly with toys and games provided - even a toddler chair. There is also a screened-in side porch. Ceilings are 13' high with ceiling fans in each room and two in the LR.

Outside there's a 2-car carport that can comfortably fit 2 small cars (a tight fit for 2 larger SUV's), split wood and a couple of kid sleds for winter use.

More Amenities: It's clean, quiet, peaceful, and private, surrounded by total wilderness but easy access to main roads. The house is spacious, with original wood ceilings and perimeter walls, original schoolhouse windows and exterior. There’s a very efficient wood stove and a large fireplace, large seating area, whether on the couch or around the wood stove. There is also a TV with DVD/VHS player (sorry, no cable TV), a fairly extensive DVD/VHS movie library and wireless internet access. There is a washer/dryer, dishwasher, stereo, iPod dock/tuner and many of the other comforts of home. Sheets and towels are provided and the kitchen has all the requirements any year-round home would have including a microwave oven and dual conventional ovens plus, of course, cook surface.

Out and About: Schoolhouse Rd is a well-maintained dirt road, used by residents and visitors for walking. Across the road there's the 13th Lake Brook, which can be accessed down the road. There is hiking and snowshoeing right outside the front door (Schoolhouse Rd is a well-plowed and sanded dirt road). We’re a 10-minute drive from North Creek for the grocery store, liquor store, Cafe Sarah for fabulous espresso and baked goods, Bar Vino for tapas and artisan beer and wine and many more interesting shops.

There's great hiking 3 miles up 13th Lake Rd around the lake and up to Puffers Pond in the Siamese Pond Wilderness Area. There's also white water rafting on the Hudson (which is at the bottom of both Schoolhouse Rd and 13th Lake Rd, on Rte 28), the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, films and antique shows in Indian Lake, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake among numerous summer activities.

We’re also a 15-minute drive from Gore Mountain Ski Center for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. No more than 3 minutes up the road from the house is Garnet Hill Lodge for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. They also have a newly renovated dining room and bar in this historic lodge that overlooks the mountains and Thirteenth Lake.

A Bit of History: During its days as an elementary school, the North River Schoolhouse was the first school in NY State to offer skiing as part of its curriculum. The kitchen and mudroom is actually the first schoolhouse, built in the late 1800's. The main part of the house was built in 1903 and functioned as a schoolhouse until the mid 1940's. Historic photos of a number of periods are depicted in reproduction photos on a few of the walls. And, aside from the kitchen, the upstairs and the walls that form the bedrooms, all walls are also original tongue-and-groove wood. The restoration and renovation (done in 1993 and 1996) was the first time the building was used as a residence. Before and after photos are available for those interested. Our family has been in North River since 1903 when my great grandfather built a camp nearby after his daughter came to 'take the cure' at an Inn also on Schoolhouse Rd. Every summer our family came to North River from various towns in the Northeast and many made it their permanent home. I have numerous cousins in the area whose origins are from Port Washington NY (Long Island) but who came to love the mountains to make them their home.

About Cari Clement

This is a family property and, while I bought it originally, I share it with my daughter, son-in-law and two grandkids. I lived year-round in the schoolhouse from 1995-2002 after which I sold my manufacturing business in Glens Falls, NY, to a company based in NC who I worked for as Creative Director for 9 years until they were sold in 2012. In 2002 I married a man from Montpelier, VT, where I now live. Currently I'm officially retired but do consulting work in my field of inventor of yarn and craft tools. I also head a fundraiser called Cast Off Chemo! supporting the cancer research of Dr. David Krag of UVM. I spend time in the warmer months at the schoolhouse, as I have many cousins and friends there.

Cari Clement purchased this house in 1989

Why Cari Clement chose Adirondacks

For a couple of years, the schoolhouse was a working bar that hosted square dances. The whole town (mostly family) went to these dances, as evidenced by a photo of such on the wall near the porch. I always would pass the schoolhouse, wondering what would happen to it, as it had been left abandoned to the elements for many years. But its structure was strong and endured years of neglect. But as soon as I could afford to, in 1989 I made an offer on the house to the person who owned it and, while it was totally uninhabitable, I was determined to fix it up. In 1993 I was able to get a construction loan and the rest, as they say, is history…..

What makes this house unique

I love the peace, the spaciousness, the gardens (I'm an avid perennial garden), the quiet in the winter and the rush of the 13th Lake Brook in the spring (though not so much the black flies, which are around til the end of June…..). But mostly, I just love being there. Summer evenings are cool and there's a screened in back porch for watching the lightning bugs...

Very quiet

  • 3 of 5

This is a charming old house in a very secluded setting. It's down a dirt road with no close neighbors and a lovely brook just across the road. Everything we needed was provided and there were plenty of towels. Also so handy to have a washer and dryer in a vacation rental.

One morning we were having breakfast and a family of deer came walking through the yard. So beautiful!

My only complaint is that the house wasn't as clean as I would have preferred. I ended up having to scrub the kitchen and bathrooms to feel comfortable. And there was evidence of mice. I know it's an old house in the mountains, but yuck.

So overall, if you're not a super clean freak and are looking for a quiet getaway in a beautiful place then this is the house for you.

Located in the south central Adirondacks on a dirt road across from stocked brook, the area is perfect for hiking, kayaking & canoeing (on 13th Lake, approx 3 miles away), or just strolling on Schoolhouse Rd. 6 miles from North Creek hamlet.
