Overview

Boothbay Harbor Area House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, sleeps 4

Leave the city behind and step into this one-of-a-kind authentic ocean-front cottage. On the inside of this cozy cottage, you’ll fall in love with the painted, wide plank floors, bookshelves, stone fireplace, and original paned windows. On the outside, the sites and sounds of the bold Maine coast, just steps away, will take your breath away. Sit on the porch in one of the Adirondack chairs and watch lobster boats pulling their traps, while sipping your morning cup of coffee. In the evening, witness gorgeous sunsets from the back lawn while enjoying a glass of wine. On a foggy day (you’re bound to have one), we suggest curling up by the fireplace with a good book or taking advantage of modern-day conveniences such as Direct TV, Apple TV, and WiFi.

The cottage has two bedrooms: The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed, dresser, and closet. The second bedroom has two twin-sized beds and a dresser. The cottage is also equipped with a livingroom sofa that can pull out into a full-sized bed. The eat-in kitchen is on the east side of the cottage, with a bathroom, complete with shower, off the kitchen.

Our Maine Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Many, who have written their comments on the Laughing Gull Cottage, always verbalize the beauty of the view. It is stellar, with the green foliage across the water, the rocks, the two sitting chairs to watch the birds and the Ocean rolling in, are all worthwhile to mention.

I would also like to include the warmth of Laurie and Thomas, the owners and the details and touches that add to our welcome of Laughingly Gull. There is everything that you would need to cook a meal with, lots of fresh fluffy towels, plenty of wood for the glorious fires in the evening. Laurie had left on each towel, a little stone or shell – so welcoming! She was there to greet us and to let us know if there was anything we need – just ask – and it was so sincere.

This is our second year at the cottage and we have already booked for 2016 and will continue to do so, not only for the kindness that the owners share, but the beauty of Maine.

Coastal Maine Paradise, Exceptional Location!

  • 5 of 5

Laughing Gull Cottage was the perfect base for our coastal Maine vacation. The location at the edge of John's Bay is beyond beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. We loved waking to the sound of the waves lapping on the rocks, sitting on the deck or in the Adirondack chairs with our morning coffee watching the lobster boats collect their catch. I'm sure that, during the peak summer months, the area is busier, but for our week in September, sometimes all we could hear were the waves and the birds. Our days were filled with visiting local attractions such as Pemaquid Point Light and Boothbay Harbor as well as trips up and down the coast to Owl's Head, Christmas Cove and everything in between. The cottage is centrally located for day trips and is near many shops and restaurants. Some days though, it was hard to tear ourselves away from the view! In the evening, we would do our best to be back at the cottage to catch the sunset and have a cocktail before dinner. Then we would sit out and watch the sky fill up with stars. We had a couple of cool nights, so the fireplace was cozy and warm (plenty of firewood is supplied) and the cottage's heater took off the morning chill with no problem. The cottage itself is a pretty typical old style Maine camp. The two bedrooms are very tiny and we used the second bedroom as our "walk in closet". The kitchen is basic but with everything needed to cook a meal. The space was just fine for the two of us, but any more people, other than young children, would be tight. We didn't use the TV at all (why, when you have that ocean view?!) but we did use the wireless internet, which worked fine. We found that the description provided by the owners was accurate, so things were as we expected, clean, comfortable, basic. The owners stopped by to say hi, were available if we needed anything, but we found we had everything we needed!

Do go to Pemaquid Light, stroll around the shops at Boothbay Harbor and Damariscotta, take a boat ride to Monhegan Island, as we've done in the past. We had great dinners at Chez Michel in Lincolnville, Boathouse Bistro in Boothbay Harbor and Damariscotta River Grill. Shaw's Fish and Lobster Wharf was okay for fresh lobster in a casual setting (we were told by a local that we should have gone to Muscongus Bay Lobster instead). The Dolphin in Harpswell is always good and a beautiful location. Don't go to the Harbor Room in New Harbor - bad food, bad service!

We hated to leave, would return in a heartbeat!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to write a great review of Laughing Gull Cottage because I want to keep it all to myself and have it available whenever we want to go back--which in a perfect world would be all the time. But, unfortunately, we loved Laurie and Tom so much that I have to be honest. The cottage is peaceful, beautiful and just the right amount of rustic. The crashing waves right outside the bedroom window, the Adirondack chairs on the water's edge and the spectacular view made one day feel like a week away. Having never been to Maine before, we didn't know what to expect of New Harbor and the Pemaquid Peninsula. When we booked the cottage, we wanted a quiet area--not too touristy. But as we got closer I worried that my husband and two teenage daughters would be bored, that we needed a more bustling area like nearby Boothbay. How wrong I was! We kayaked, went on the Puffin tour, spent a day in Portland, a day in Round Pond, saw Irish fiddlers in a restored one-room schoolhouse, ate the best cinnamon buns at the Cupboard, crab cakes at Muscongus Bay Lobster, lobster rolls at Shaws, fish and chips at the Contented Sole, and pretty much ate Maine wild blueberries the rest of the trip. We never even made it to the beach! I guess we'll leave that for next time.

Great stay at the Laughing Gull!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time during our stay at the Laughing Gull. The cottage had the perfect mix of rustic Maine charm and modern amenities like the cable/Apple tv, a pair of mountain bikes, etc. the location just can't be beat. It was wonderful to start each day watching our 4 year old hunting for treasures on the rocky shoreline just steps from the cottage, then bike or walk to Pemaquid Beach. At the end of the day we relaxed while watching the sun set over John's Bay in our comfy Adirondack chairs on the edge of the lawn.

The owners, Tom and Laurie were very welcoming and kept the cottage well stocked with everything we needed from the basics to firewood for the working (and gorgeous) ocean rock fireplace - perfect for the cool nights, and plenty of fans for those hot summer days. The sound of the surf lulled us to sleep at night, and we're missing it already! We hope to make it back next year!

Very Rustic

  • 3 of 5

The Laughing Gull cottage is a mix of the bad (the cottage) and the good (the property and views).

The cottage is--without hyperbole--more rustic than our friend's cabin in Vermont that doesn't have electricity. It is in desperate need of a refresh. Furniture and décor are outdated (though there is a new, small flat screen TV in the living room). The kitchen appliances and tools are adequate, but slightly below par (owners--please buy a Chef's knife). The bathroom serves its purpose, but the shower is gross and old. The bath linens are thin and small--they remind me of the kind that get delivered to my gym (but not as nice). The internet was so spotty and slow as to effectively be non-functioning, which is okay at a vacation home, but it would be nice to have that disclaimer in the listing so that guests can be prepared. In addition, the cottage is incredibly tiny--like, you don't have full clearance to walk around the bed on two of the three open sides. It supposedly sleeps 4, but we were two adults and dogs and were busting at the seams. This last comment is mostly for the benefit of the owners--what is with all the rules and threats of penalties and expulsion? Finding a multi-page document of all the ways you better not screw up or you will be punished is not the most welcoming arrival.

There are some positives--there is a large and lovely desk in the living room, and a cute porch to look at the ocean from. The larger bed (I believe it was advertised as a queen, but seemed like a full to me) was comfortable, if not luxurious. We didn't sleep on the twin beds.

Outside is a different story from the cottage. The property and views are truly spectacular. Almost (but not quite) spectacular enough to return. I would recommend this place to groups of no more than 2 people who want something slightly nicer than camping, and love the ocean.

Also, dog owners be aware that this isn't a great property to take your pets to. The yard is open to neighbors and small, and there was an instruction that dogs must be on leash when outside. Understandable, but I had envisioned the dogs being able to run down into the ocean and be free, and I spent my entire vacation wrangling leashes.

Another wonderful week at the Laughing Gull

  • 5 of 5

When we came into view of the Laughing Gull again this year, a sense of peace and belonging returned. This was our second stay at this Pemaquid gem , and we plan on many more.

The well maintained and appointed cabin is a wonderful way to relax to the sounds of waves, loons, and gulls while enjoying a view that can't be beat, all while perched at the edge of the water.

The charm and authenticity of New Harbor, the rugged beauty of Monhegan Island, and the restaurants and shops of nearby Damariscotta and Wiscasset all make the Laughing Gull a perfectly placed vacation stay.

Laurie and Tom are attentive and caring hosts, full of information about the cabin and its history, and are always available to make sure everything is right with our stay. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful cabin, we're already looking forward to returning next year!
