New Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, sleeps 4

Leave the city behind and step into this one-of-a-kind authentic ocean-front cottage. On the inside of this cozy cottage, you’ll fall in love with the painted, wide plank floors, bookshelves, stone fireplace, and original paned windows. On the outside, the sites and sounds of the bold Maine coast, just steps away, will take your breath away. Sit on the porch in one of the Adirondack chairs and watch lobster boats pulling their traps, while sipping your morning cup of coffee. In the evening, witness gorgeous sunsets from the back lawn while enjoying a glass of wine. On a foggy day (you’re bound to have one), we suggest curling up by the fireplace with a good book or taking advantage of modern-day conveniences such as cable TV, Apple TV, and WiFi.

The cottage has two bedrooms: The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed, dresser, and closet. The second bedroom has two twin-sized beds and a dresser. The cottage is also equipped with a living room sofa that can pull out into a full-sized bed. The eat-in kitchen is on the east side of the cottage, with a bathroom, complete with shower, off the kitchen.

Peaceful stay at Laughing Gull cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is an incredibly special place. Storybook cottage is exactly how I would describe it. We spent one week here and wish we stayed longer. The cottage has the best views (sunsets were breathtaking) and the personal touches inside the cabin were lovely (the lamps, antique dressers, old phone, etc). We slept so well in the cozy queen bed and loved the electric blanket! The fireplace is an awesome stone fireplace that runs from floor to ceiling. This is the perfect place to escape from it all. It is truly a special place and so very peaceful. We loved Pemaquid Lighthouse (especially climbing down the rocks close to the ocean) and Pemaquid Beach. For anyone following a plant based diet we found two neat places in Damariscotta- Savory Dining has neat veg options and Salt Bay Cafe has an entire veg menu! We can't say enough good about Laughing Gull, the kind owners, and the area. We will be back!

Cottage is in serious need of updating!

  • 2 of 5

First off, let me say, I am having great difficulty writing this review. I don't like to be negative; but, in this case, I believe I must be truthful, even if it seems negative.

The best part of this cabin is the VIEW! Unparalleled; best we have EVER had---bar none. We have been vacationing in the midcoast area of Maine for 20 years. The location is superb. Walkable to Pemaquid Beach; easy drive to Lighthouse and the great Sea Gull shop and restaurant.

(best blueberry pancakes!) Close to Reilly's grocery store and the gas station in New Harbor; and bonus---ice cream shop!

The cabin, however, not so superb. It is old---very old. The kitchen is adequately equipped with utensils, dishes and pots and pans. A small stove and apartment sized fridge are there. The heating unit for the cabin is squished in behind the table and chairs. You have to move the table and chairs to the middle of the kitchen to use all 4 seats which restricts the "flow" to the bathroom and one of the bedrooms.

The bathroom---what can I say; but that the toilet is so close to the wall, that my husband could not stand in front of it! The shower is an old, preformed metal shower that creaks with your every movement. You have to step out of the shower in order to retrieve your soap from the floor of the shower should you drop it! We laughed, it was funny, but not really.

The toilet was stained brown, probably from the water. We had to bring a case of bottled water with us---that's what we drank, brushed our teeth with and made coffee. Not the best promo for the overall condition of the property.

There is no a/c, which is a pretty common trend in Maine by the water. There are fans provided; however they were so soiled and dirty, that you really didn't want to turn them on, but to keep the air flowing, it was a must.

Lots of cobwebs in corners; sofas needed a good vacuuming--felt gritty when we sat on them.

We won't come back to Laughing Gull cottage; the rate charged is a little below average; however conditions are way below average. Sorry!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to give us your review; feedback is always important to us. We're sorry you did not have a completely positive experience at the Laughing Gull cottage, we only wish you had said something sooner, giving us the opportunity to address your concerns at the time of your stay. It means so much to us that our guests are comfortable and enjoying the cottage as much as we do. We certainly would have provided you with an additional cleaning service, including a good washing of the fans! Most surprising was your description of the water stains in the toilet. We're sorry this caused you an overall (unnecessary) concern with the water. The cottage has well water that is tested routinely, for the benefit of our guests, with results posted on the back of the kitchen door. We have never had anything but healthy water results, never experienced brown water in the toilet, nor have we ever had a renter complain about the water. No doubt the cottage is small and rustic (and dust bunnies are known to appear)! It is one of the first three original Maine cottages (camps) built on Pemaquid Trail. We have tried to preserve the character of the original cottage, while providing some of the more modern conveniences, such as a monitor heater, flatscreen tv with Time Warner cable, as well as wifi. This is a challenging balance to maintain, and we realize the cottage is not a fit for everyone. Thank you for staying with us. All the best, Laurie & Thomas, Hosts

An idyllic Maine cottage

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful sounds of the waves lulled me to sleep every night in this "Fairy Tale" cottage on the waters edge. Watching the lobster boats every morning from the Adirondack chairs was the perfect way to start the day.

I can't wait to return!

Another amazing week at "The Laughing Gull"

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at the Gull and each has been fabulous. I almost hesitate to write a review because the secret will be out. Among the many, there are three primary reasons for our return year after year. First, the property is well-maintained. Second, the location and view are what people go to Maine to experience. Third, it is comforting that the owners live directly across the street and are attentive to all needs. Eg. the water heater died Sunday and it was replaced Monday. The road on which the property is located is quiet and the only things that disturb that serenity is the crashing of waves and the gentle hum of the lobster boats casting their traps. There are all kinds of entertainment within a couple of miles: the fort which dates back to the French and Indian War; the archeology of the original Pemaquid settlement (compete with graveyard) which dates back to the 1640's; informal dining at the Contented Sole, Shaws, and the Seagull; fine dining at the Bradley; the incredible breakfasts at Cupboard Cafe; and the convenience of Reilly's grocery store just up the street. There is no need to leave the area, but if you choose to do so, within easy driving distance there are four noteworthy destinations:

1. Boothbay Harbor with its botanical gardens, aquarium, shopping, and tall ship cruises,

2. Rockland with its Farnsworth (Wyeth) Museum and newly opened Museum of Modern Art,

3. Damariscotta with a large grocery store, quaint shops, and movie theatre, and

4. Hardy Boat Cruises which sail to Monhegan Island and take evening cruises up and down the beautiful rocky coast of the peninsula.

I cannot overestimate the importance of having the owners nearby. They are genuinely nice people committed to the area.

We try to spent at least a week in this area of Maine every year, and chose Laurie and Thomas’s cottage in June this year. The place is perfect, and the only complaint that we have is that our stay was not long enough. The location is wonderful, right on the shore, with magnificent views from the lawn and from the living room, and the sound of the tide at night. We enjoyed the property so much, we seldom ventured away. (Of course, we've been to this wonderful area many times, and are well familiar with all the attractions that it has to offer.) The cottage itself is not large (as described), but arranged lovingly and a pleasure to stay in. The owners are so welcoming and friendly, getting to know them was an additional attraction. -- We look forward to returning to The Laughing Gull soon.
