Shawne and Ray currently live in Australia and have developed an extensive knowledge of Tuscany through many years of travelling there. As with many, over time their appreciation for the cultural richness, the beauty of countryside, and the food and wine has grown into a love of the Tuscan lifestyle. Several times each year they return to experience Tuscany and to visit friends.
Ray purchased this apartment in 2013
The idea of spending extended time in Tuscany motivated them to purchase an apartment in Florence. Because it is their home when they are there, the apartment has been furnished and equipped to a high standard both aesthetically and with respect to comfort. When not in Florence, they make their home available for rental by discriminating travelers or business executives.
A 25 minute walk along the River Arno takes you to the famous Ponte Vecchio and Florence's historic centre. The Chianti countryside can be accessed within 15 minutes by car. After a day in the of sightseeing in the bustling centre, guests can return and relax in this sophisticated, fully equipped apartment.
The apartment is located in a neighbourhood of Florence which has wide, tree-lined streets and small businesses of every kind. Being outside the 'tourist zone' guests have the opportunity to experience an authentic residential neighbourhood.
A short, uphill walk following Via San Mineato al Monte takes the traveller to the famous vantage point of Piazzale Michelangelo. This is a wonderful spot to people watch and take in the magnificent city panorama and the mountains to the north. When we are home in Florence, our regular exercise route is to ascend via Via San Mineato al Monte and return along Viale Michelangelo. (Viale Michelangelo is a winding, tree lined boulevard with wide sidewalks.) A few minutes further takes you to the historic abby - Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte.

We are more than happy to recommend this apartment, which filled all our expectations. We were particularly impressed with how true its description and photos are – there are no surprises. The neighborhood is a good place to get away from the city center, overcrowded with tourists. Yet “downtown” is easily accessible by bus or on foot. We knew the area from previous visits and enjoy its varied selection of bakers, butchers, fruit and vegetable stores and family restaurants, etc. It is a neighborhood where people live and work; I was particularly drawn to a carpenter´s workshop window, from where you can see everything from moldings, furniture or fireplaces being worked on.
It is a place that can easily be called home, to where one can return.
My thanks to our host, Ray, who made everything easy, and who did a superb job of getting us informed, settled in, and made happy to be back in a city we love.
We have rented apartments in European cities including Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen, and this accommodation stands out. This apartment is bright, modern, spacious, well equipped and in a great location. It is truly a gem. All the luxury and comfort you could hope for. Everything is as described and the owner was extremely helpful prior to our arrival and during our stay. Ray truly treats his guests with care and it was a pleasure to correspond with him. He provided us with valuable information and fabulous suggestions throughout. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by Serena and the apartment was spotless. The main attractions of Florence are within easy walking distance of the apartment and it is also well located for those who wish to explore Tuscany by car. It was lovely to stay in a residential neighborhood. Thank you Ray and Shawne for sharing your wonderful home with us and being great hosts from afar! We recommend this property very highly!
I highly recommend this accommodation to couples who are seeking accommodation close to the historic center but without the crowds of tourists. It has everything that you could ask for. It is a spacious apartment for two people with two bathrooms and every convenience. The fixtures, bedding, supplies and all of the furnishings are top quality. There is free wi-fi, a washing machine, air conditioning and a really comfortable queen sized bed. It was very luxurious and comfortable.
The neighborhood has a lot of shops of every kind for local residents. You do not feel like a tourist here and everyone was so friendly. The apartment is very close to Piazzale Michelangelo.
The owner was extremely helpful providing information prior to our arrival. He emailed a very comprehensive booklet about the apartment and the neighborhood. We were greeted by Serena, an English speaking, local person who knows the city very well. It was easy to make the rental payment by Visa and the damage deposit was refunded withing 3 days of check out. The owner was also flexible about payments and offered several options to pay.
Without question, staying in the apartment enhanced our time in the city immensely. I recommended it most highly.
We've rented apartments and houses in London, Paris and Provence over many years; this apartment in Florence was superb!
A property for 2 persons; 30 minutes walk along the river Arno to all the great tourist sights in town; 20 minutes walk to the best fresh food market in town if you are inclined, as we were, to have dinner in the apartment for a couple of nights; a few minutes walk to great local amenities - bar / caffe; wine store; edicola (newspaper); bakery; and importantly a bar for a quick drink before dinner. The local merchants were incredible kind and positive at all the stores we went to - just lovely!
The apartment is sophisticated and stylish. One bedroom with two bathrooms (his and hers for us); and a great sitting room, very functional kitchen and dining area. We had dinner "in" two nights, and the wine glasses, cutlery and dishes provide were very good (with a good dishwasher to clean everything up afterwards!).
It was extremely hot when we were in Florence in the second week of September, so we really appreciated the excellent air conditioning in the apartment. Wi-Fi connectivity was superior.
The "secret sauce" to the whole rental experience was the owner Ray Hamilton. Ray helped us find local accomodation prior to coming to the apartment; once we arrived he gave us great suggestions for restaurants (both local and in the tourist areas); directed us to local stores for basic supplies; and had a support team (greeter and driver) available for anything you needed to support your stay.
Ray really cares about the clients who rent his apartment. He was very, very supportive and responsive of any requests we had for information or help, from initiating the rental request, to departure from the apartment at the completion of our stay.
Florence Design Apartments. Highly recommended - a great place to stay in Florence!
We spent a week in this wonderful apartment touring Florence and the area surrounding this region. First the owner Ray is very knowledgeable about the area and gives you fantastic advice about how to get around and helpful tips about the local bus system and fun places to eat. Our favorite place was Zeb's which is a very small and intimate restaurant where the owner chef talks to you personally about your order then goes and cooks it!
We ate there twice once for lunch and once for dinner and the food was amazing both times. Also the local coffee shop is so much fun with all the locals - we made breakfast a couple of days but then ended up going to the Coffee shop the rest of the time for wonderful breakfast sandwiches and pastries. We would not have found these place without Ray's advice. The apartment is located away from the City Center which is really nice since you get a more local feel. Much quieter and away from the thousands of tourists which swarm over the City Center. It is spacious, clean, bright and the air conditioning works really well when it is hot out. You have all the amenities of home and everything is of top quality. There is a lot of pride of ownership and you can tell the owners care about making a great experience for their guests. Ray's bus advise was great and we were using the bus lines easily within the first day and even took the bus down south to Siena a beautiful town about an hour outside the city. A really nice touch is the bottle of Chianti wine which Ray provides for your stay. We purchased some salami, ham and cheeses from the local shop and had a perfect happy hour. If you are planning a trip to Florence with a loved one this is the place to stay. A perfect retreat for 2 people!
My wife and I spent four weeks in this great apartment, finding it exactly as described in the listing and photos. It was convenient, clean, well-maintained, and the owner/staff provided excellent customer service. If going to Florence again, this apartment would be my first choice; I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone else. The time of our stay was unusually hot. The apartment's air conditioning made our stay not only survivable but enjoyable.
Appartamento Ricorboli is 15 min by car from the main train station (Stazione S. M. Novella) and 20 min from the main airport (Peretola). It is located near Piazza Ferrucci, on the south side of the River Arno (one street back). Viale Michelangelo, one of the most famous and beautiful boulevards in Florence is just a 1 minute walk away.
If you are a guest with a car, you will appreciate the easy access from the A1 (the Autostrada which connects Milan and Naples) and to the Chianti countryside. We are located outside Florence’s restricted traffic zone, so it’s possible to drive right to the front door of the apartment and park nearby.
We love our neighbourhood. The River Arno is 200m from the door and the wide streets and mature trees provide a marked contrast to the city centre. Windows look down onto Via di Ricorboli (a bustling street during morning and evening rush hours) and out towards Piazzale Michelangelo. Other windows look out onto a courtyard, the centerpiece of which is a magnificent magnolia tree. In early evenings, the bells from nearby Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ricorboli add to the sensory experience. (Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ricorboli houses a fresco - circa.1335 - attributed to Giotto.)
From Appartamento Ricorboli, Florence’s major attractions are easily accessed via a short, scenic walk along the Arno River or by using the regular city buses (ATEF). The bus stop is within 80m of the apartment. An uphill walk from the apartment to Piazzale Michelangelo, the viewpoint for magnificent panoramas, takes about 12 minutes.
Since the location is outside the area visited by most tourists, it has an authentic flavour, with Fiorentines going about their daily routines. There are dozen of small businesses of every description within 800m – everything from cafes, bakeries, delis, butcher, hardware store, pet shop, gelateria, bank, wine bar, restaurants etc. A major shopping centre is 1.3 km away.
