The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!
Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.
The Recycled House sleeps 6. There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided. There's a half-bath downstairs and a full bath upstairs.
The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.
A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.
Free wi-fi access is available.
The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.
If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House! Check out the video tour at http://recycled.house.

I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own.
I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!
It took over 6 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way. I'll give you the tour when you come show you where everything came from. Most folks get a real kick out of it.
The Recycled House is quite special and if you want to be downtown, the location is fantastic.
The Recycled House was designed from the beginning as a guest house. It's very welcoming. People tell me it's really romantic. I have hosted a lot of families, girlfriend getaways, bridal parties, folks coming for reunions and sporting events at UVA and all the festivals that go on here in Charlottesville.
Just about everyone says the photos don't do justice to the place. You just have to come and stay and see it for yourself!
What a fabulous house! The house is unique, the location is excellent, and Debra is a wonderful host. As I sat on the front porch in the morning and early evening, I began to think It was my home as I waved to neighbors walking by on the path. I look forward to another visit.
Oh, and the delicious cookies Debra left in the cookie jar hit the mark for someone with a sweet tooth.
My family loved staying in the Recycled House while we visited Charlottesville, VA! It was so much better than staying in a hotel and we loved that we could walk to so many restaurants and shopping. We toured beautiful Univ. of Virginia; hiked the Blue Ridge Mountains; found some great breweries and wineries with gorgeous grounds and views; enjoyed the local TomTom festival. The Recycled House had a rustic industrial vibe. It had everything we could possibly need and Debra (the owner) was so welcoming. We have recommended this place to everyone we know. We cannot wait to visit again!
Fun, whimsical, well-appointed house in a quiet location that is located a short walk from all the food and shopping in the pedestrian mall in Charlottesville. Stayed here in April as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teens) and the house is set up to provide fun family time but also had some comfortable places for much needed teen alone time. Debra thought of so many things to stock so we always found the little 'wonder if they have one' things we were looking for.
The location is perfect - a short walk to the center of the outdoor mall and the adjoining Saturday morning farmers market. Short bike ride or drive over to Univ of VA as well as an easy drive to Monticello, Skyline Drive and all the many wineries and breweries.
This was a nice compromise between my desire to be accessible to the surrounding areas around Charlottesville and my wife's desire to walk to all the shops and restaurants.
If you are looking for a fun, quiet, retreat that is within walking distance to the mall then this cannot be better. Already looking forward to our return visit.
The Recycled House is one of a kind and has such interesting stories connected to all of its materials. Debra gave us the background tour when we arrived. It was in a great location for us as we were in town for the C'ville marathon and it was near the start/finish lines. We had two adults and two college students so used all sleeping. We ate dinners and breakfasts in, due to the race and made good use of the kitchen, which could use more mid-sized bowls, cooking pots, etc if you really want to prepare something beyond basic. We were comfortable and could spread out in the house and on the outside patio. We also had fantastic spring weather. We really enjoyed walking in the area too. The hot water was a bit in and out in the sinks but nothing major. Shower was fine. The kids said the sleeper sofas were not that comfortable but the bed in the master bedroom was fine.
What is the annoying deal with daily messages from VRBO on writing a review? And including a relatively short expiration date? Really? Don't recommend.
Our entire family enjoyed our stay at the Recycled House during a recent visit to UVA. It is a beautiful house tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, but still just a short walk to the downtown mall. Debra was wonderful and very accommodating, as we had a late arrival time on our check-in day. One must see this house in person to truly appreciate the fusion of art and functionality. We can't wait to return.
Debra and the recycled house are great!
Awesome find for a girls' weekend! We had 4 ppl the first night and 3 the 2nd and had plenty of space. Excellent location so we were able to walk everywhere despite visiting during the coldest days of the year. Charming home with lots of attention to detail and guests' comfort. No complaints whatsoever.
Monticello is only 5 miles away.
Many local wineries are an easy and scenic drive.
Charlottesville's Historic Downtown mall is just four blocks away.
