The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!
Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.
There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided.
The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.
A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.
Free wi-fi access is available.
The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.
If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House!
When inquiring, PLEASE tell me a little bit about yourself, the purpose of your visit, and any special needs or requests.
I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own.
I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!
It took over 6 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way. I'll give you the tour when you come show you where everything came from. Most folks get a real kick out of it.
The Recycled House is quite special and if you want to be downtown, the location is fantastic.
The Recycled House was designed from the beginning as a guest house. It's very welcoming. People tell me it's really romantic. I have hosted a lot of families, girlfriend getaways, bridal parties, folks coming for reunions and sporting events at UVA and all the festivals that go on here in Charlottesville.
Just about everyone says the photos don't do justice to the place. You just have to come and stay and see it for yourself!
What a fabulous house! The house is unique, the location is excellent, and Debra is a wonderful host. As I sat on the front porch in the morning and early evening, I began to think It was my home as I waved to neighbors walking by on the path. I look forward to another visit.
Oh, and the delicious cookies Debra left in the cookie jar hit the mark for someone with a sweet tooth.
Such a unique property, and Debra was very accommodating to make us feel like we were at home. Thanks; we'll be back!
Great location and easy walking distance to the downtown mall.
The Recycled House in Charlottesville is very cool. The layout and design are eclectic as well as functional - a very cozy nook to hang out in and a very practical and useful location for access to excellent restaurants and venues on the Downtown Mall. We had a fantastic time and Debra provided excellent amenities, including freshly baked cookies. A good find, a good value, and a great re-use of some vintage materials!
We loved the Recycled House. Would definitely stay here again. Perfect location a few blocks from downtown mall. Well furnished kitchen with top of the line appliances. Great king bed that is extremely comfortable. Could not have been happier with our stay.
The Recycled House was a great stay for a girls weekend. Very very clean and comfortable! Welcoming host with cookies ready upon arrival. As well, very convenient to Downtown Charlottesville. Would absolutely stay here again!
You can walk a few blocks into town, or take the free shuttle to UVA
Debra the owner lives nearby and provides a warm welcome along with a hysterical story of how/why the house was built. She has taken every effort to make the house interesting, personal and welcoming.
The house is light and airy and the temperature control and water pressure and mattress comfort is all very good. Everything worked but if it didn't she was a short text away!
Would definitely stay there again.
