The Hudson River House has the Most Spectacular Views in the Hudson Valley.
About Jason Gabriel
Founder and owner, SHAKESPEARE ON THE HUDSON Owen Lipstein, Founder of Shakespeare on the Hudson It is no accident that the greatest school of art that America ever produced, the Hudson River School, had its birthplace next door and across the river from Shakespeare on the Hudson. I was an NYC magazine publishing entrepreneur, I came to Greene County to start a new kind of Shakespeare company, one, that at the heart of its mission lived and breathed by the proximity and inspiration of the River. I directed and produced 9 seasons of irreverent, radical and relevant Shakespeare productions. Many people came from near (twin counties) and far (NYC) to see our shows, and many came away, rapt. It was my great privilege to have been able to do this. “The ineffable mystery of the land, the river, the running creek, the elevations, the sounds inform everything that happens there. Every play, every event, every birthday every wedding party, every getaway that we host on the property leaves our guests with new clarity.. Call it rough magic. If you do not believe, come here and count the bald eagles!” Owen is a former founder, publisher and editor of groundbreaking magazines including: American Health (founder, publisher, partner) * National Magazine Award of Excellence 1 National Publications : Psychology Today (editor-partner) Spy (editor-partner) Mother Earth News (editor-partner) Regional: Inside Out Hudson Valley: (Editor, publisher- partner)

Big Countryside house with charm
This farmhouse is very large and can hold big families. It has a pool and hot tub and lots of land. The house has a lot of charm and could be a very beautiful prestigious house with some TLC. It fit our large extended family with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, two big kitchen tables and lots of room to relax in. The views from the house of the pool and the Hudson were wonderful and peaceful.
The “sky room” is not available as it is closed off, despite the pictures. The pictures were from a couple years ago as the master bedroom looks a bit different and some of the decor has changed. The kitchen was a good size with a large island and sink, however lacked prep/counter space compared to the size of the kitchen.
The house has a ton of charm and overall my family enjoyed our stay over the weekend.
Beautiful and Spacious, yet lacking some basics.
This beautiful estate needs some TLC. We had some issues that were taking care of when we arrived. However When we went to heat up some catered food we brought. The oven wasn’t working. Only 1 of the 2 gas grills was in working order. It made it a difficult task to heat food up for 25. There a lot of loose bricks that made it hard for my older parents to get around. We also had an entire board of the upper deck come off. Fortunately no one was hurt. The A/C is just units and 1 bedroom doesn’t have any air at all. The units are not efficient for the size of the home. Overall this home and the views are impressive but again it needs TLC and organizing.
Great house and property! Would definitely stay again.
Wonderful time, beautiful scenery with plenty of space. We had exactly what we needed for the weekend!
Looks beautiful on paper.
This property was a real let down. First and foremost there was no water for the last 24 hours of our stay. No way to shower or wash, or go to the bathroom for any of us, including my 95 year old Uncle. When we called Audrey, who was very pleasant, she was surprisingly unconcerned, offering only to have a plumber "stand by" should the water not come back on in a few hours. (It had already been off for about 5 hours at that time!) Ultimately we insisted someone come to the house and take some action. ie; fix it, urge we vacate the premises as it is illegal to rent to folks when there is no water, and offer us a refund. None of that happened. The plumber came out, concluded the problem would take time and could not be accomplished at that time. We were offered the use of a second home on the property, about a 3 mile round trip on private, rutted roads. A few of us tried and found it to be old, cold and dirty. As I had an appointment in Manhattan that Friday, 12/28, we instead headed to our cousin's home in New Jersey so we could shower and go to the bathroom. As a result we had to cancel our appointment and return to Santa Monica on our non refundable airline tickets that day.
I should also mention the rats we found in the kitchen on the second day we were there, one hiding in a stand alone cupboard. We removed this cupboard to the outside balcony. The other was eating from a bag of chips we had left on one of the kitchen counters. That one scurried off to parts unknown as we approached.
I am a retired 76 year old judge. I know the law. I do not intend to sue for the obvious breach of contract and violations of state laws regarding "habitability".
I should note I have rented from VRBO on several occasions in the past dozen years. If VRBO does not offer a substantial refund, I will not use your service in the future and will limit my actions going forward to simply notifying the appropriate state agencies.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Incredible property and staff!
I planned a large weekend gathering here for 21 people and was stunned by the house, the grounds, and the incredible views. Audrey and Ean (the property managers) were helpful and stopped in everyday to ensure everything was going well. Our group cooked all weekend and the kitchen was well stocked for the large group, along with a long dining table that fit everyone.
Everyone had a great time - thanks, Owen/Audrey/Ean!
