About John Bertke

John Bertke lives in Dayton, OH and enjoys visiting Norris Lake with his friends and family. He enjoys fly fishing and smoking cigars.

John Bertke purchased this cabin in 2010

Why John Bertke chose Norris Lake

They say location means everything. The Big Dipper is located in the woods, right on the waters edge. The fish come to swim around the dock. The boaters come to swim around the cove. There are two golf courses nearby. What more could you ask for?

What makes this cabin unique

I'm an avid fly fisher, my wife loves to golf, and my daughters never tire from wakeboarding so my whole family stays happy when we visit The Big Dipper.

Comfortable Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

The accommodations at the Big Dipper were comfortable and relaxing. The view from the house is spectacular. The house has 3 refrigerators, which came in handy. No problems with over-working a refrigerator. The dining room table is incredibly long-one of the great perks of the house. The owner/manager was easy to work with and responsive. I'll definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Laura, I am glad your group had fun. With the massive size of your group, spanning our multiple cabins, you all were amazingly organized. It will be fun to see you all back again for 2017. Thanks, John

What A TRIP!

  • 5 of 5

Our family and close friends just completed our stay at the Big Dipper and the accommodations were ideal. The view from the kitchen, onto the lake, is the best in the cove and the layout was perfect as each family had their own floor. The kitchen was spectacular with two dishwashers and a dining table big enough to accommodate 20 people. The three refrigerators came in handy as did the full-size washer and dryer.

We rented two boats and two wave runners and the dock was perfect with two covered spots for the boats and two floating platforms to park the wave runners. The jacuzzi was very nice after a full day on the lake and the game room kept the kids occupied. The house has NO shortage of TV’s and everyone had there own bed which is difficult to find when housing 12-15 people.

Access to the jumping bridge, proximity to Sugar Hollow Marina and Shanghai Marina made for added convenience. Although secluded and private, the gated community is close to town where we were able to shop for groceries and daily essentials. The owner was great to work with and was very accommodating. In addition to the great memories, we spent valuable time together with our friends and family which made for the perfect get-a-way. We are already talking about our next trip.

Owner's Response: Bub, You nailed it "great memories with friends and family". Norris is an ideal location and The Big Dipper is the ultimate gathering place. Thanks for noticing that "best location" in the cove; perfect view up the creek as well as down the creek. Hope to see you all again, John Bertke

A retreat to remember

  • 5 of 5

This home was just that, a home.

My family gets together with 9 other families every year for a weekend getaway. It was a tradition that began in college, and we have continued on for 13 years straight. As singles became couples, we searched for a bigger place to lodge. Then, as couples became families, we needed an even bigger place to lodge. We were running out of hope, until we found this little gem. It is tucked away in a secluded area, on the water, with an abundance of rooms and beds to accomodate such a massive gathering. The comforts and extras provided entertainment in the basement, a quiet resting place for the little ones in the middle of the day (as well as in the wee hours of the morning), and our favorite part of The Big Dipper was the big dining room table that accomodated all of us at the same time. Some of our best conversations and the most meaningful times of fellowship happen around the table.

The owner was a joy to work with. He provided prompt responses to all of my questions leading up the the visit, as well as during, and even afterwards. He is a fair man to work with, whom I never once felt any frustration or dismay with.

When you schedule your next visit, I trust that you will have a similarly pleasant experience as you plan your trip, and then settle in for a time of quality fellowship and enjoyment with those you love at The Big Dipper.

Cove Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 28 had a blast at the Big Dipper! Awesome place to stay! The location, tucked back in a beautiful cove was amazing, safe for swimming for all the little kids, great for those relaxing morning cups of coffee on the deck, and dining every night with a view of the water was incredible. We have had a 20 year tradition of big family vacations at the beach, but decided to try the lake and see what it was like...now we have a new tradition! We tubed, skied, fished, paddle boarded, swam, dove off the dock, watched movies, played pool, air hockey, and cards at the gigantic dining table. So much fun!! Boat ramp is four houses down and two marinas are pretty close...just a great location. We had a large group and the sleeping accommodations worked perfectly. Lots of thought went into the planning and furnishing of the Big Dipper...we had more than what we needed. It is super nice, but has a rustic lake house feel that says, just relax. Can't say enough about how helpful the owner John was at answering questions and making sure we had everything we needed...really gracious! You have to check this place out.

Owner's Response: Mike, Thanks for noticing the "super nice but with a rustic lake house feel." While totally modern, we wanted the all wood feel of a cabin. Adding the stone corners & columns to the outside façade, apparently rare, further added to that cabin feel. Also thanks for the furnishings compliment. Many nights were spent staring at blank blueprints figuring out where to put walls followed by beds. Hope to see you all again, John

Marine Corps Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our trip to "The Big Dipper" at Norris Lake was an extra special one as we are all Marine Corps Veterans who served together in 1985-1986 at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan. It had been 29 years since we had seen each other and we are all scattered every where, we had people from WI, IA, NC, NY, OH, TN, MS and KY The house and setting were all beautiful and had everything that we could ask for, we all truly enjoyed the fact that we were kind of secluded from the outside world by no phone calls and texts it gave us time to catch up with each other. The fellas loved the dock and used it the entire time and the decks served for lots of reminiscing and laughter of the things we did way back when. We would love to thank John whole heartedly for everything he did to accomodate us and allowing us the use of his beautiful home. We look forward to returning in a couple years for our next one. Thank you :-)

Owner's Response: Stacy, Perhaps we could charge more for that no cell phone therapy? For those of us unable to disconnect from the world, we have forward our cell phone incoming calls to the cabin land line with free long distance. The free, unlimited, secure wireless also keeps us connected via email and iPhone texting. Thank you for your service and of course, semper fidelis. John

Family from far and wide congregate for the weekend

  • 4 of 5

This is a very nice place with lots of rooms for 20 or more people. Beds are nice sized so everyone had a bed to sleep on. Sort of hard to find as these are on a very steep road but a nice and quite area. Recommend to bring extra blankets and towels if your are large group like ours (25). Only found a couple extra blankets and other than that only sheets and the quilt/comforter on the bed. Loved the long table in the kitchen and all the frig space. Tv's everywhere as well and a great hot tub. Enjoyed this place!

Owner's Response: Sally, We admit 7 TVs in one cabin is a little over the top. The idea was after a week of these large families hanging out together, the TVs would prevent people strangling each other. Thanks for the tip about extra blankets. We found closing the two stairwell doors helped to prevent the heat from rising to the upper floor. Thanks, John
