About Becky Riley VerPlanck

We bought our land on the island in 1986 when we moved to Winthrop, Maine after my ex husband left the Navy. During the ensuing years we slowly built our gratification at its finest! It was a project filled with good times, friends, picnics, campfire, swimming and memories too numerous to mention. Now, as a grandparent I see my dreams come true as our family enjoys time off the grid and on the lake. I am just delighted to be able to share it with other families to make their memories too.

Becky Riley VerPlanck purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Becky Riley VerPlanck chose Kennebec

We loved to camp and tented here for a number of years before we made the decision to build. It is a beautiful piece of land on a lovely lake, and we really enjoy the fact that it is on an island. I have found it it to be the best thing we ever did!

What makes this cabin unique

Island we say more? It is in many ways an adventure, but a comfortable one. Canoeing across the water in all weather loaded with groceries and clothes for the week creates the best separation from 'real life' and time to just relax, unless of course, I am kayaking, swimming, sailing....

Great little cabin, relax on the lake.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is great; comfortable, relaxing. We had everything we needed. Loved canoeing to and from the "mainland", canoeing all around the lake, watching and listening to the many loons, enjoying the sun on the dock. Instructions were there for everything we needed. We had a lovely weekend. The description of the cabin was very accurate, the cabin was very clean.

Beautiful and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

It is our last night here and we are very sad to leave. The kids, my fiance and I have been fishing and swimming all week. It is so peaceful here. The cabin is beautiful and we couldn't have wished for a better vacation. We can't wait to come back next year.

Lovely place for a great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to Wit's End for two years now and are eagerly looking forward to our return. Ted and Becky have a beautiful, clean cabin well stocked with books, games, boats and other necessities. Fishing, kayaking, swimming and reading on the dock are our favorite activities. We particularly enjoy listening to the loons. It is an adventure being on an island and it has given us great stories to share! Ted and Becky are always making improvements and work hard to keep up the cabin. They have always been incredibly helpful, and go out of their way to make our visits enjoyable.

We are located on Center Island in Lake Maranacook in Readfield, Maine. Access is by our canoe or your own boat, 1/3 mile from the mainland. What is there to do there? Kayak, sail, canoe, paddleboat and swim on the water. Sun on the dock or watch falling stars at night. Paddle around the island, and explore Blueberry Island next door. Puzzles, caroms, checkers and all sorts of games. Curl up and read in the hammock by the water or on the porch. Have a camp-fire at the fire-ring and tell stories deep into the night. Listen to the loons and the bard owls calling in the night. Relax on the swing, play Frisbee, or badminton, or maybe even horseshoes. If you want to go off the island, Maine’s state capital of Augusta is 10 miles away with its wonderful Maine State Museum. The ocean is only an hour south, to Popham Beach or Reid State Park, or head east to Camden and Rockport, just an hour away. So much to do and there is something for everyone!

Other Activities: We love to canoe and kayak on the lake, watch stars from the dock, enjoy a campfire. Reading on the screen porch or relaxing in the hammock are favorites of our visitors too.
