My husband and I live on the Hamakua Coast on the Island of Hawaii where we are active in the retail tire and property/casualty insurance businesses. We love to travel in the Southwest and have a menagerie of pets: 3 dogs, 3 rescued cats, 1 pet wild boar named Winston, and 3 horses. We look forward to spending more time in Kanab hiking, exploring new off-road trails, and making more friends.
Gay and Chuck Porter purchased this house in 2010
We have vacationed in the Southwest for many years in beautiful places like Sedona, Taos, Santa Fe....but we actually give credit to VRBO website and Dru and Bob Hepler, owners of the Grand Canyon Cabin for our decision to buy a home in Kanab. Long story short, almost a year ago, their TV caught fire in the middle of the night, they credited us with a free night and we've been fast and good friends ever since. Their friendship and others we have met, Kanab's down-to-earth beauty, charm, proximity to national parks and sights, clear blue skies and fresh air...need we say more? We sincerely wish you the best that Kanab offers and that you truly enjoy your stay!
We can't say enough about the views from our home. Most days are blue sky and sunny with cool evenings. Kanab is so central to one of the most beautiful areas in North America that every day offers a new adventure.
We absolutely loved our stay in Kanab. The Porter's were awesome to work with. The home was gorgeous, clean, organized and had everything we needed! We loved the big wraparound porch and the views from every room. We would definitely recommend this place to family and friends. We hope to return soon!
We have been renting vacation homes for 7 years and without a doubt this is the most fantastic home in which we have stayed. Kanab is the perfect location to enjoy the National Parks of southwestern Utah, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks. The home is fabulous. The home is extremely well equiped with all the ammenties. The porch is amazing to enjoy the surrounding area, and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
FIRST of all, the owners Chuck and Gay, were very easy to work with and quick to respond. SECOND, the location of this place put us about as central as you could be for Grand Canyon-North Rim, Bryce, Zion, Lake Powell, Cedar Breaks and so much more. It was convenient to 'main street's restaurants, groceries & gas. THIRD, the place itself was ROOMY, COMFORTABLE, CLEAN, and well stocked - - and best of all views! Huge deck was great for watching sunrises. I would HIGHLY recommend booking this place (we have used VRBO places many times and I think this ranks as one of the top places we've stayed at).
Gay and Chuck's pride in providing a lovely home from home certainly shines through. the quality of the furnishings, the excellent amenities in the house, and stunning aspect of the location left us needing nothing and wanting to stay longer. We can't recommend this place enough and will certainly look to return some time in the near future.
I just want to add my accolades to Roger's review. The home was spacious and comfortable, well decorated, and had everything on hand that one would need for the stay. And it was spotlessly clean! My bed in the second bedroom was extremely comfortable, including the pillows.
While a big reason for coming to southern Utah was to visit the parks and get out doing things, this house was such a pleasant venue that spending some time just relaxing there "at home", whether inside with all the windows and views, or out on the porch, was a special treat as well.
Lastly, its location is convenient to the parks, and the town of Kanab is a very likable town with useful amenities.
We stayed at this location from Sun, May 22 to Sun, May 29. We have nothing but good things to say about the home, and about the location. The pictures give you a good idea but you have to see it to really appreciate it. It is set up high and has wonderful, 360 degree views. The wrap-around deck is a very pleasant place to spend some early evening hours.
Kanab is really a great location as a base for visiting sites in the area. We didn’t do as much travelling to sites as we had hoped, since we were unfortunately not feeling all that well during much of our stay. However, we did see the big 3 – Zion, Bryce and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Of the three, the north rim was our favorite. I have visited the south rim on a number of occasions and the crowds are a definite issue. Not only was the north rim way less overrun with people, even on Memorial Day weekend, but the vistas you see are easily as good, if not better, than what you see from the south rim. We highly recommend taking the easy drive down to the north rim. Although we only saw mule deer along the way, we saw by far the most wildlife on that drive down to the north rim as well.
While there, make it a point to not just visit the Visitor’s Center area, but also make the 15 mile or so drive over to the Cape Royal lookout area as well. It will be well worth the drive.
We also recommend that you visit the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary during your stay in Kanab. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. They do a phenomenal job. There are multiple, 1-2 hour free tours available. You just have to call or go online to register the day before.
We did not do it but, be aware, that if you want to try and hike to the famous “Wave” located in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, you need to go early to the local Visitor’s Center in Kahab and sign up for the morning lottery. They only allow a certain number of hikers each day and you have to win the lottery to do so. We asked about it and were told that over 100 people per day often sign up for that lottery, and only a dozen or so receive passes to hike.
