Historic Vacation Rental Home on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9 depending on season)

McKenzie View is a lovingly restored historic home on Lake Flower in the village of Saranac Lake in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The house retains original family furnishings and antiques and is heated and available year round.

Relax in a large but cozy living room with a wood burning fireplace and a splendid view of lake and mountains. Test your culinary skills in a roomy, fully equipped kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen is a sun-filled breakfast room and a formal dining room that seats eight.

Wake up to the sunrise over the lake and mountains in a queen-sized bed in the master suite with a twin bed in an adjoining room. Two other bedrooms have double beds. All beds are dressed with seasonal Pottery Barn linens. Two twin beds are available in summer in the quiet second floor unheated porch that backs a wooded hillside. There is a full bath with shower on the second floor, a full bath with claw-foot tub on the third floor, and a half bath on the first floor.

Just minutes from Lake Placid and Olympic sites, and twenty miles from Whiteface Mountain, the village retains much of its historic charm, with its numerous cure cottages, active Main Street, and century-old traditions such as the Winter Carnival in February. Spectacular fireworks can be seen across the lake from the house on Indenpence Day, New Year's Eve, and twice during Winter Carnival. Main Street shops and the farmers market are a five-minute walk along the lake from the house.

The Visitors Interpretative Center in nearby Paul Smiths, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, and the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake provide opportunities to learn more about the Adirondacks. Annual events in the region include the Ironman Triathlon, Empire State Games, the I Love New York horse shows, Lake Placid Film Forum, and Plein Air Art Fesitval.

The third-generation owner has a graduate degree in building conservation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is lovingly preserving the century-old house. Enjoy your stay on a historic street lined with many other lovely older homes. We are sure you will enjoy the house and region as much the Roberson family has!

About The Owner

My father was raised in this home, which has been in our family for a century, and I spent every summer since childhood, nourishing my life-long love of the Adirondacks. It was always my desire to live in the house one day, and vacation rentals allow me to share this lovely home with others while defraying expenses. My father is thrilled that I am actively restoring it, bit by bit. Architectural and artistic skills seem to run in my family: my great-uncle was the prominent Adirondack architect William Distin, my cousin is an architectural project manager, my great-grandfather and brother are professional photographers, and my undergraduate degree is in painting and drawing. My graduate degree in building conservation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has fostered enduring connections in the preservation community and I have come to love Saranac Lake as my second home. Combined with my first graduate degree in library science, guests appreciate the fine library of local authors, fiction, and Adirondack literature. The kitchen may be my favorite room: spacious yet warm in its antiquity, I know you'll enjoy preparing meals for your family as much as I have.

The Owner purchased this house in 1982

Why The Owner chose Adirondacks

This home has been in my family for a century, and it was only natural for me to want to preserve the family connection to the Adirondacks. Saranac Lake continues to be a vibrant community of involved citizens and has become an arts mecca in the Adirondacks.

What makes this house unique

The house is a mere five-minute walk to Main Street and a short drive to many outdoor and cultural activities.

Everything was perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our needs! I fell in love with Saranac Lake when paddling the Northern Forest Canoe Trail in 2014. I had to organize a family reunion to share this lovely community with my extended family. This was the perfect place. We all cook. The kitchen was well equipped and big enough for family to gather. The breakfast nook provided just the right level of privacy for my daughter to keep up with work. We had a rainy week (still lovely) and we gathered in the dining room to read, draw, complete puzzles and plan hikes. We loved that we had walking access to the lake (right across the street) and into town. It was exactly what we wanted and delivered in every way. I hope to make this trip an annual tradition.

Quaint, well-stocked kitchen, charming

  • 4 of 5

We loved that we were able to walk into town to enjoy breakfast or dinner. The crisp cold air was a great way to wake up on a February morning. Off-street parking was great and the home was heartwarming at the end of our long days of skiing and exploring the area.

Wonderful vacation rental!

  • 5 of 5

Mckenzie View is a beautiful home, convenient to the Village activities and shops, but as peaceful and relaxing as if you were in the middle of the woods. The home is furnished with everything you need to make your stay comfortable and feels like you are 'home' the moment you walk in! We had a large group and were very comfortable in this spacious home. Suzanne was wonderful to work with and very accommodating. Hope to be back soon!
