About Karla Scanlan
We (Dave and Karla) are the proud 'parents' of our yellow Lab, Skink, and rescue cat, Shamrock, and the delighted uncle and aunt of ten nieces/nephews. Our labs have traveled w/us on vacations down to the Florida Keys and up to Bar Harbor (where we honeymooned three decades ago). All the kids in our lives regularly remind us how amazing the rural life is and how lucky we are to be so immersed in nature. Don't hold it against us but we're die hard Dallas Cowboys fans since the late 70s..hence the importance of having the professional football package available to all our guests in the fall!
Karla Scanlan purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Karla Scanlan chose Foster
In 1998, my husband Dave and I became the third owners of Grandview which was built in 1946 by master carpenter John Mason. At purchase, we found a hand made sign in the shed indicating that Mr Mason had named his home Grandview. We loved the name and kept it! After four years of being weekenders, we moved to Mathews permanently to enjoy the laid back life style. We now live at Grandview year round and are on site to provide local fishing expertise or help plan your trip to Mathews County. In early 2011, we renovated the original owner's cottage to create the Crab Shack (VRBO #357886) and in 2013, built the Fish House, the larger cottage offers plenty of space for a family of four or four adults.
What makes this Cottage unique
Grandview quickly works its magic on guests with its privacy, abundant nature and relaxation. The bird life is simply amazing (Karla's dad is an ornithologist so we have a great appreciation) and on a clear night you can't believe the stars! From our pier you can catch crabs or fish. Dave's even caught a snapping turtle and a gar from the pier! Mathews County's culture is a bit like the Florida Keys (which we love) in that you quickly adapt to island time. You stop worrying about all your emails and to do lists and time is measured by meal time, cocktail time and nap time. Our double hammock swing poolside was purchased on our trip to Key West. We specialize in getting people to relax, take a deep breath and enjoy nature in all its glory. Mathews County doesn't even have a stoplight but we have 90 miles of water trails great for kayaking and boating and nine coastal trails that are part of Virginia's Birding & Wildlife Trails system. For bicyclists, the Tour de Chesapeake is held annually in Mathews offering bike routes of varying lengths.

Wonderful Celebration weekend
We had a very relaxing weekend celebrating birthdays. We enjoyed kayaking, fishing, playing mini golf, playing games, biking and seeing the views. Thank you for a worry free weekend in the middle of our busy lives!
Bohannon Fish House - a respite in paradise - something for everyone
I hesitate to gush on all of the pluses that this property has, for fear that it will not be available all of the times that I want to come back. (If I'm honest, I just want to live here :). There are so many little touches that the hosts provided - soap/ shampoo/ pool towels as well as pancake mix and other seasonings. Those coupled with all of the interesting touches throughout the house, you can tell Karla and Dave have really *thought* about their guests needs well ahead of their arrival. While there are three houses on the property - the one we stayed in, another guest house (the crab shack) and the owner's house, my family of 4 and I felt like we had more than enough space for our getaway without feeling encroached by others on the property. The pool, kayaks and mini golf provided entertainment for my boys while the swing under the house and dock provided perfect reading spots for me! The sunsets are amazing - *plan* for this. Seriously! Make sure to have your favorite beverage, perhaps some cheese, crackers, and fruit - sit on the Adirondack chairs and enjoy! It is SOUL filling! I swear that the coffee tasted better in the mornings on the dock as well! My youngest son fished & crabbed constantly and others found respite in doing quiet things they enjoyed. Again, while the hosts private residence is on the property, we would see them occasionally, and they were always available at a moment's notice if we needed anything - other than that, they were out of the way - in other words, perfect hosts!! My family and I did go into Gloucester (20 min or so away) to get some supplies and grab dinner one night - other than that we made it a point to just land at the house and "be". Although it was just a long weekend, the refreshment that we felt afterward was that of a longer vacation. It's our hope to return again soon and perhaps stay longer (How's forever sound??!! ha ha) It was hard to leave, but we will be back! Thank you Scanlons for a lovely visit!
Amazing place to stay!
This is one of the cleanest, nicest places I've ever stayed. Everything was so nicely decorated and it had everything you needed. My family and I loved everything about it - the dock, the kayaks, the crabbing, the bikes, the miniature golf course, the cornhole/beanbag toss game, the views, cooking in the kitchen. It was wonderful. Plus, I've never stayed somewhere that my dogs also felt so welcome :) When we come back to the area, we will definitely be staying here!
Beautiful and Relaxing
The property was everything the listing stated and more. Our vacation consisted of beautiful grounds, amazing views, and was so relaxing. Nothing is overlooked with this rental.
The home is as wonderful as the property it sits on. What's more is how kind and hospitable the Owner's were. You guys made a nice vacation even better. Thank you!
