About Buff Elting

Buff is a full-time artist. Her nature-inspired paintings are in galleries in Santa Fe and Denver. You can see examples of her work hanging throughout our condo. Bob is one of the best land surveyors in the West as well as an avid and highly skilled back country pilot. Together we enjoy skate-skiing, trail running, hiking, rafting, and cycling. We spend as much time as we can at the condo when it isn't rented out.

Buff Elting purchased this condo in 2002

Why Buff Elting chose Summit County Colorado

We bought this condo because we love Summit County and wanted to spend more time skiing, hiking & relaxing and less time battling weekend traffic on I-70. We love being at the very top of the Wildernest area and chose this particular unit because of its location on the end of the first building, right next to the forest and wilderness - full of light, very quiet and no parking lot views!

Before beetle kill and fire-mitigation actions a few years ago, the primordial dark forest came right up to our windows. Stepping from our door into that forest was downright magical. The forest is still close and very beautiful, it just takes a couple minutes longer to get to it on the far side of the sloping meadow. The best advantage to fewer trees is that our view of the mountains and lake have actually improved! And we still love it that our vistas never include any cars, noise or headlights.

What makes this condo unique

This condo is as close as you can get to the edge of Silverthorne National Forest and Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. Plus, tucked back against the quiet of the forest, we are protected from the headlights and noise of the parking lot while still having gorgeous views of the mountains. Our end unit allowed us the opportunity to install picture windows on both sides of the fireplace, welcoming in lots of natural light and vistas. A peaceful, airy feeling makes this a place that really welcomes you home.

Chickadees, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Stellar Jays, Pine Grosbeaks and Downy Woodpeckers and Abert's squirrel are all regular visitors to the tall pines right outside the tall LR/DR windows. If you're patient, observant and lucky, you might even be graced by a nocturnal visit from our beautiful resident foxes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Buff & family,

What a delightful time we had here. Your condo was perfect for the 4 of us. It was bright & cheerful & had everything we needed. Just one note - the boy's tub is draining slowly - thought you'd want to know. Thanks for the Christmas chocolate & wonderful hospitality.

We'll be back.

Just about Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

First off, this was perfect in every way. Great hosts, great communication, really nice condo. Comfy couches that the kids fell asleep on more often than not. Wifi! Super close to all the ski resorts!

SO, we arrived and found that the directions were perfect. The key was exactly where they said it would be though the lock box is tricky to open. The ski storage is great and the complex does an amazing job keeping the walkways and parking lot clean. Plenty of parking. The kitchen is nicely appointed and past guests left lots of stuff to use like hot coco and noodles and coffee creamer and we did the same. The rooms are nice and were big enough to be comfortable for the grown and the kids.

Netflix was great. Art work is beautiful. The recommendation list they sent over of places is great. We took a trip to Frisco and went to The Lost Cajun for lunch. So worth the trip!!!! We will be doing that again when we come back. So was Red Mountain Café (not cheap but such a cool atmosphere and the food is good).

Our son went snowboarding out back of the condo and saw a fox watching him while he was boarding. The condo is on the corner and has great views from every room. We saw lots of wildlife and the stars were so pretty. There were rabbit tracks and tracks from either a fox or a wolf right behind it when we arrived.

Couple notes (good ones  ). They have a no joke awesome heater. It will burn you out if you give it the chance so mind the temp instructions they send and you’ll do great! The hot water tank is downright industrial and the water pressure is great! It’s so good that both showers can be on while the dishwasher is running and still get a nice hot shower! (great when you have teenagers).

The only thing I would note is that there are no ceiling fans and no fans on a stand (like a box fan) so if you are used to sleeping with one, you might want to bring a little fan with you. It’s a nonissue and a thought we didn’t consider before we got there. haha

Bottom line though is that THIS is the place I will be staying at next time we come to Colorado!

Wonderful views!

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Silverthorne. The condo had everything we needed as did the town. Frisco and Dillon offered additional dining and shopping opportunities within a short distance. It is conveniently located to the ski areas and there is a hiking/snowshoe trail within walking distance of the condo as well.

Great mountain getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved using this condo for a family ski trip! It is very cozy and warm. We loved making a real fire in the fireplace! The couches and beds were very comfortable. Kitchen was well stocked with utensils, spices, and even condiments! Loved sitting in the living room and looking at the amazing view. We even had a fox come to visit! Buff was very responsive to all my questions and needs. We would definitely come back and highly recommend it!

A long weekend getaway before our daughter started graduate school-great location and very relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

VRBO write-up very accurate. We loved everything about this property! Location was great - especially if you want someplace centrally located but not in the middle of tourist congestion. Thr condo was very comfortable roomy - we had 3 adults - and well supplied. The location and windows in the condo make you feel close to nature and views are wonderful. The higher elevation and great windows give you different views of the mountains as well as Lake Dillon/the reservoir. We hiked from the condo, went to Idaho Springs to Whitewater raft and also used the hot tub and pool in the clubhouse - great after a long hike! Thanks for a great property and hope to be back again.

Summit County is fantastic place to enjoy some R&R no matter what the season. For year-round fun, we are within 30 minutes of seven major Colorado ski areas (Breckinridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Loveland, Vail, Beaver Creek, A Basin). Steamboat is a 90 minute drive. Frisco Nordic Center is 20 min away: a personal favorite, it is one of the premiere Nordic centers in the Rocky Mountain Region with 40 k of expertly groomed ski trails, snowshoe trails, rentals & lessons. Right next door to Frisco Nordic is the Frisco Adventure Park with groomed sledding for hours of family fun in the winter and a skate-board park in the summer.

Other activities include mountain biking, road cycling, hiking, golf, sail boating, kayaking, fishing, water skiing, river rafting, horse-back riding and much more. The drive to Steamboat is worth it just for the stunning scenery year-round. During the summer they host an authentic, outdoor rodeo. The Alpine water slides are great fun while you wait for the rodeo to begin.

There is renowned fly-fishing on the Blue River in the tail waters of Dillon Reservoir Dam, just a few minutes away right at the bottom of the hill. The Raven, an 18-hole golf course, is less than 5 miles away, along Highway 9 following the Blue River.

Lots of great shopping: the Silverthorne/Dillon Factory Outlet Stores are just minutes away or Frisco, Breckinridge and Vail are only 20-30 minutes away.

One of the things we love most is being able to walk right out the door into the Silverthorne National Forest and Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. The path starts literally right at our doorstep. Take an easy, pleasant stroll through the woods or for more ambitious, strenuous hikes you can summit Buffalo Mountain, hike to the Seven Falls or connect into other trail networks. A Trail Guide book is available in the condo to help you figure out where you want to go.
