As an Interior Designer and consultant for the past 20+ years I have designed and managed projects all over the globe, mostly for Fortune 500 companies. Now a full - time mom working from home, the Hills Studio is not only my "home office", it's my personal retreat. It's also my husband's favorite place to steal a nap or ensure a good night's sleep.
Because this is where I go to get work done and also to escape my family, the house is kept impeccably tidy and organized. As both a designer and a mom, achieving order over chaos in our home is a constant struggle, so the Hills Studio is my respite!
Inside the Studio you will find some or all of the following: something tasty simmering on the stove or in the oven, lots of cold drinks, 3 ways to make coffee, snacks both healthy and not, all the makings for a "ready to go" meal in the pantry or freezer. Loads of books, art supplies, paper for sketching, toys for all ages, music, etc.
Basically all of our favorite things.
The well stocked kitchen (including decent knives and cookware) awaits your perfect farmer's market finds as well!
These days the Hills Studio has evolved into a 'home away from home' -where friends and family from all over the world come for a comfortable stay and discover central Texas from a local's perspective. Our guests stay just a few days or as long as they want to.
Our main house is next door to the Studio, so whenever possible we will meet you upon arrival, help you get acquainted with the property, answer any questions and make sure you have everything you need. We are available 24/7 during your stay with us.
Please no smoking.
Please respect our wonderful neighbors, no loud music or after hour parties, etc. This is a family-focused, quiet residential area.

We look forward to meeting you.
New places and a love for travel have always been a way of life for me. Because of my Dad's career we moved around quite a bit when I was a kid. By the time I was 12 we had lived in 4 states and 7 cities.
My father is from the great state of Maine, Skowhegan to be exact. The youngest of 13 siblings, a life long Eagle Scout, a Captain in the Marine Corps, a true Company Man. The first person in his family to graduate from college he earned a full scholarship, served in Vietnam and then worked 37 years as an executive for Shell Oil Company. My dad is an endless source of patience, love and kindness. My best friends call him a Living Saint.
My mother was born and raised in post-war Japan. Just 17 when she left her native country and moved to the US, she worked a nanny and a florist while studying english at night. Artistic, a fantastic cook, crafty, a natural at making anything. She was a stickler about quality, she preached the merits of mindfulness in everything, even making up a bed was an artistic expression. My mom was seriously skilled at creating beauty from scratch, especially in our home.
I am a proud product of my parents. The love and passion I have for Living comes directly from them.
Now firmly rooted in Austin since 2008, where I live happily with my husband and our twin boys, we have no plans of moving anytime soon. We still love to travel but stay pretty busy at home too.
Chasing after 4 year old twins and keeping up with all the new happenings around town is a full time job in itself.

Location, location, location. Austin is simply one of the best cities in the world.
Live like a Local. Discover the Austin vibe for the first time or return to relax and reconnect.
Our house is your house.
Austin is a special place that people rave about, love, and adore. We felt it here, at this certainly charming, warm, comfortable, nook. Location. Southern Hospitality. Design. Attention to detail. Meticulous, yet laid-back, generous, and kind owners. All here. Location is bucolic, idyllic. Ridiculously close to everything, yet dreamily near stately mansions. Yet super friendly, chill, laid-back neighbors. Close to Lake Austin, Mount Bonnell (which we visited three times). Shawna, the owner, is an amazing woman! Super smart, kind, and deep. Books everywhere. She is a designer and it shows. Lights where you need them. Comfy, clean beds that seem like you're the only person who ever slept there. Seriously! We spent a month here. Not pictured: an amazing garden in the back. Succulents, vegetables, and flowers. Handmade planters from reclaimed pallets. A gorgeous garden shed that the owners happily shared their key to for our bikes. When we arrived, all the right lights were on (a lamp everywhere you need one). Fresh flowers everywhere! Wine, beer, and sweets in the fridge. More fresh bakery delivered by the owner's adorable twin boys on Saturday! Toys for my kids! Friends for my kids! Paths in the yard for my daughter to ride her bike on! The owner's husband helped us with safe bike routes for my 7 year old and I (and drove me to my birthday dinner since I didn't know what to do without Uber). When a problem or a few arrived (all caused by us), Shawna's response was literally immediate, as she lives next door. Unbelievable. Blew a fuse. Fixed in minutes! Broke the blinds. New blinds the next day! Son locked us out of the bathroom. Shawna picked the lock within minutes! This isn't a run of the mill rental. This is the Hills rental. They are kind, generous, smart, giving people (they even shared their babysitter twice and watched our kids themselves a few times)! Thank you for making our one month in Austin as amazing as it could possibly be. We will definitely be back, and will most certainly stay in touch!
Overall, it was a great trip and a lovely place to stay. First of all the location was perfect, just a few minutes from everything we wanted to do and see in Austin. And the cottage/bungalow itself was amazing. The attention to detail, and the overall relaxed atmosphere were at the top of our "why would we recommend" list. It was clean, had everything we needed, and great service. I don't recall the name of the 1st restaurant that was recommended, but it was great and I'm sure anywhere they would have sent us would have been the same. We did eat at Uchiko, and that place along with the other location Uchi, was super delicious! Thank you Shawna and Eric (and the cutest little ones ever!) for a great stay.
My husband and I decided to spend a weekend in Austin with another couple friend of ours to celebrate their birthdays. Instead of staying at a hotel downtown we decided to find a more spacious rental alternative. Not only was this place centrally located, reasonably priced, and beyond adorable, but the owners were so accommodating and hospitable as well. Even though we booked late and last minute, Shawna responded right away. Upon arrival we were welcomed with wine, fresh fruit, soda, bottled water, and even granola bars for our daytime adventures! The unit itself is nicely furnished with unique pieces perfectly representing the Austin vibe. It had everything we needed from a fully equipped kitchen to plush linens and comfortable bedding. And most importantly - it was extremely clean
Since we were meeting up with a number of friends we needed to stay somewhere central. This place was perfect as it literally took us 10-15 minutes to get anywhere - restaurants, parks, the mall, downtown, etc. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the unit and would definitely recommend this property!
Oh! My! We just spent a most delightful week! for Thanksgiving in Austin! This Home Away "home" was truly that! A "home" away from home! Shawna and Eric were wonderful hosts and helped us to create "forever memories" with our family by being able to host our Thanksgiving dinner, here! Everything we needed was graciously provided to make for a very relaxed and enjoyable day spent with the ones we love! :) The location was perfect and very close to our daughter who lives in Austin! We definitely plan on returning and referring this "home" to family and friends! :)

Exceptionally kind and thoughtful hosts, property was spotless and looked exactly as described, perfect convenient and 5 min from downtown location. We travel a lot and this was by far the best VRBO property that has exceeded my expectations. The owners provided the most outstanding customer service from high quality products at the house, to activities and restaurants recommendations to dropping off umbrellas on a rainy day. I would stay there again and recommend to family or friends. Thank you Shawna! You are a genius at creating special experiences and anticipating your guests' needs!
