'The Merrill Home on Banner Mountain'

This family home is enjoyed frequently by the owners and cared for by a caretaker, so that attention is paid to the premises at all times.

IMPORTANT . . . If you find that you are interested in renting, we ask that you please tell us something about you and your party. Since this is a family property, we like to get a sense of who you are! This also helps us avoid the occasional fraudulent, frivolous or inappropriate inquiry. Thank you very much for your consideration.


The home is a quiet corner property on a developed street that features widely-spaced luxury homes and tall trees. Ours is the small, older, original home in the area. The cabin-like exterior opens to delightful north- and westward views from a roomy, comfortable and quiet retreat with a large, north-facing picture window.

Who and how?

Just right for two or three couples, a family, a 'guys/girls weekend' . . . or as headquarters for a retreat, family reunion or wedding party. The dining room or deck could anchor a family get-together, gourmet dinner, meeting of partners or a board planning session.

Groups and parties?

You are welcome to entertain, get memorably married, or hold a party at the property. We require special arrangements if you expect 20 or more guests. Our rustic meadow and roomy deck have accommodated many a cocktail party, picnic and birthday celebration.

Close to charm!

It's an easy drive of 10 minutes to either nevada city or grass valley, with fine restaurants, music, theatre, shopping, art galleries, historic attractions and recreation.

How close to skiing and hiking? Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing (and warm-weather walking) is available at Washington Ridge recreation area, about a half-hour drive away. For downhill skiing, reach Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge in under an hour on good highways and freeways. Our house is somewhat below the snow line most seasons, meaning you can depart from your snow-free vacation retreat to the snow area.


The master bedroom has a king-size bed and the bathroom can be made private to form a suite.

A second full bedroom, with a double bed, is right by another 3/4 bathroom (shower, no tub). A door closes off both the bath and the bedroom from the rest of the house.

The third bedroom has a queen-size bed; it is between the living room and the master bedroom and bathroom. This bedroom is not entirely private, as it is the only indoor passage between the master suite and the living/main room. However, there is a way out the master, and back into the house, without walking through. Anyway, ask us if you need further clarification!


The fully equipped dining room / kitchen area is large, with a table that can sit 10 and a big window view. If you need to feed more people, there is room to set up more seating. The kitchen has an electric range and oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, food processor, and lots of counter space. Spices, coffee, tea, sugar and other incidental supplies are available for your use. Grocery stores are within 10 minutes' drive.

Wash clothes if you want!

A washer and dryer are available in the utility room.

Sit outside!

The deck is large, has close access to the kitchen, and it is so nice for sun, fresh air and relaxation while looking down over Nevada City. We also have a grassy meadow (great for parties, meditation, or romping). It is ok to smoke outside or on the deck.

Bring your pet?

We bring our dogs all the time! Pets are welcome and we may require an additional deposit; contact us with details. Our insurance policy prohibits dog breeds that are reputed to be aggressive. Be aware that there is no doggy door and no fence -- only strips of forest. We don't let our dogs out unsupervised, as she might get confused. Communicate with us and we are happy to help.

See deer!

Deer come and go, and you may well look out and see a big buck staring at you from down on the lawn.


We usually prefer a 3PM arrival and a noon departure, but we can often be flexible if you let us know what you need.

About Maureen Merrill

This is a family home dating from the 1940's, when a 'log cabin' was built by Al and Peg Merrill. Al had been born right down the hill in Gold Flat, in 1909. He later made his way as a young man in San Francisco, providing for his family as the eldest of seven children. He worked in the shipyards during WWII, and he also played banjo, dressed windows and traded stock on the Pacific Exchange before returning to Nevada City. Al and Peg, along with their son Mike, made a family home of the home they had built as a retreat near Al's childhood roots.

Al became a successful Nevada City real estate broker and property owner, while Peg was a mom and community volunteer. Both were especially active with the local hospital and other charities. Adding to their original cabin in unpretentious phases, they created a spacious old-and-new home with a view down to Nevada City and northward to, sometimes, the Northern Lights.

The house is so beautiful and set away from the road. It was the perfect size for our family.

We loved everything about the Merrill home. We would definitely stay here again. It was roomy and the view to the valley is amazing from the living room and kitchen. It has a very spacious deck around the back side of the house which you can access from the kitchen and living room. The home was fully stocked with everything we needed.

Awesome Cabin

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Merrill House and will definitely come back. The cabin has all the charm and charisma that the history of the place would suggest. The house was clean, comfortable and the views are tremendous. We felt like we were at home. We enjoyed downtown Nevada City, Scott's Flat Reservoir and the South Fork of the Yuba River. Walking our dog along Northview Drive was very enjoyable in itself. Such a great street and location.

Wonderful home with amazing views close to everything - YUBA and Nevada City!

My friends and I along with a beloved dog had a wonderful time at this property and were pleasantly surprised as the pictures do not capture how big and spacious and charming this home is. It has lots of history and character and the best deck in the world for watching sunrises, sunning, reading and watching the stars at night.The kitchen was huge and had everything you would need to cook some excellent meals. Maureen was very generous and was checking in with us the whole time we were at her home and was generous with a late checkout. I really cannot recommend this home enough.

Beautiful home with beautiful views

Maureen is a fantastic host. She was thoughtful in making sure we had everything we needed before our stay. To top it all off, the views from the deck are absolutely breathtaking.

Our house is in on Banner Mountain, overlooking Nevada City from the south, about equidistant between Nevada City and Grass Valley. Both charming towns are less than 10 minutes' drive by car.

At about 2,500 feet elevation, our house is usually below the snow line -- though not always! Ski areas are an easy, scenic drive, about 40 minutes for cross-country and 65 to 70 minutes for downhill resorts. In spring, summer and fall, outdoor recreation opportunities include hiking, fishing and panning for gold. Enjoy the Yuba River, with bridges and 'beach' areas just 30-40 minutes away.

You will find nice restaurants, art galleries, museums, music and theatres in town. And, unique walkable shopping for clothes, books, antiques, gifts, collectibles and ethnic goods.
